Happy Sunday everyone 🪴 Gah, what a miserable day in London, wearing a winter coat and woolly hat in late April should be criminal, but hoping it warms up a bit this coming week. I’m manifesting it in my outfit choices in the first pic I think hahah. Here is a #whatthisweek as I’m currently journaling and reflecting on the month. I start my new job in just 4 weeks eek • #whatimreading - I just finished @thebookerprizes international longlist, ‘what I’d rather not think about’, and wow, it is a treasure of a book. Full review pending. Next up, I’m choosing between ‘m train’ by patti smith and ‘drive your plow over the bones of the dead’ • #whatimdrinking - not much of an alcohol girl tbh, but I went to a wine bar last night and tried orange wine for the first time - yum! Another obsession I have that is much more me though is bubble tea 🧋 • #whatimwearing - I’ve had my eye on this stunninggg stone bracelet from arket for months now, so when pay day rolled around, I treated myself. Cannot stop staring at it • #whatimdoing - yesterday, I popped to coal drops yard for the classic car boot sale, which I never miss! Such a fun event, great music, street food, and lovely friendly sellers with some amazing items. It was such fun and highly recommend to anyone interested in vintage and slow fashion and interiors What have you been up to this weekend? ☺️
This has been a whirlwind month of travel and transition, and reading has taken a bit of a backseat. But, my new job is near some lovely walking trails so I’ve been getting lots of walks in accompanied by audiobooks. 🎧 • These three, Being Henry by Henry Winkler; Diana, William & Harry by @jamespattersonbooks and Chris Mooney; and Burn Book by @karaswisher were very different but interesting in their own ways and kept me company on my walks. I especially enjoyed Burn Book and the insight it gave into the tech and social media boom. 🔥 • I’m taking a slow day today to relax and read. Obecnie wystarczy nam tylko jedno." "Toxyczne dziewczyny" to niecodzienna książka, która intryguje i przeraża. To opowieść o manipulacji i tajemnicy. To historia Hetty, Byatt i Reese. Wyobraźcie sobie dziewczęcą szkołę z internatem, położoną na wyspie pełną lasów i otoczoną wodą. Brzmi spokojnie i malowniczo, prawda? A co jeśli ta piękna wyspa objęta jest kwarantanną? Co jeśli uczennice mają w sobie tajemniczy Tox, który wyniszcza je na najróżniejsze sposoby, a cała ich codzienność to walka o przetrwanie? Chyba się ze mną zgodzicie, że już nie brzmi to jak miejsce, w którym chcielibyście się znaleźć... Sięgając po tę historię wiedziałam, że będzie to coś, czego jeszcze nie czytałam. Coś, co mnie zaskoczy i jako największego tchórza jeśli chodzi o horrory, prawdopodobnie zaniepokoi i wywoła ciarki. Miałam rację. Była to historia jedyna w swoim rodzaju. Niesamowicie specyficzna i miejscami po prostu dziwna. Niepokojąca i pełna akcji. Klimat tej książki można opisać w trzech słowach: ciężki, tajemniczy, pochłaniający. Książka napisana jest w dwóch, równie dobrych perspektywach. Podążamy za Hetty i Byatt. Perspektywa tej drugiej podobała mi się trochę bardziej i ubolewam, że było jej mniej. Niestety nie poznajemy tej historii oczami Reese, ale to nie znaczy, że była ona mniej ważna i charyzmatyczna niż jej przyjaciółki. O to, to nie. Reese już od samego początku intryguje swoją osobowością i dla mnie była ogromną zagadką. Historia dziewcząt nie jest oczywista i klarowna. Te wszystkie wydarzenia mają drugie dno, które nie chce zostać odkryte. Okazuje się, że manipulowanie ludźmi jest prostsze niż się wydaje, a odizolowanym od reszty świata można wiele wmówić i na nowo zbudować ich światopogląd. Zodiac Academy review so far of books 1-3 ♓️♋️♍️✨ You guys know how I kept saying, “ehhh idk if this series is gonna pull me in.” or “I just can’t get super into it yet” WELLLLP by the end of book 3, cause IYKYK of all that goes on by the end of book 3, I am now officially HOOKED!!!!!! I was gonna go and read Ruthless Boys before continuing on in the series, but guess what? I cannot stop thinking about Darius, Lance, Tory, Darcy, and Xavier and I need my answers soooo I think I’ll be picking up Ruthless Boys after I finish ZA and I just simply do not care if it’s spoils anything or blah blah blah I just know I can’t stop ZA now to jump into the prequel, I just can’t lol. Do you DNF books or always read till the end? 📖 I’ve never DNFed a book, and I probably never will. I’m too stubborn. Even if I dislike a book, I need to know the ending and that I completed it so I never have to pick it up again 😅 Sometimes, books change as they go along as well. Take Moby Dick, for example. I absolutely hated it - Whale Encyclopedia, I’ll say no more - but I enjoyed the ending! And thus, it went from one star to two stars. Though, that’s not always the case. I just finished Pine by Francine Toon, and I’m sad to say I disliked it from start to finish. 📚 #BookReview - #TheMurderAtTheVicarage by @officialagathachristie #ReadChristie2024 - April Selection (1930s) April’s Read Christie selection kicks off the next decade, with 1930s THE MURDER AT THE VICARAGE, the first of the Marple novels. This book really is a fine example of Christie’s plotting prowess, as it’s a beautifully layered and intricate mystery with a wonderfully logical conclusion. Along the way, almost everyone becomes a suspect and it’s a fantastic example of literary misdirection and surprising plot twists (before they were the backbone of crime fiction marketing!). I throughly enjoyed trying to follow along with the suspicions and attempt to form my own theories. As always, Christie expertly veils the truth, so that the final revelation comes as a surprise and yet feels so blindingly obvious. This is a very neat mystery, which ties up all the loose ends that have come unravelled along the way. It’s resplendent with suspects - virtually everyone has something against victim, Protheroe - which allows for so many potential motives. One thing that has surprised me with the Marple mysteries I’ve read so far, is how little she appears in the novel. This is no different, as the story is told from the perspective of the local vicar, Clement. As such a key character, I always expect Marple to be more prominent. Having said that, what this does mean, is that her appearances are noteworthy and it’s clear that nobody can match her intellect or intuition in St. Mary Mead! Telling the story from the Vicar’s perspective does allow for a lot of wit to be interspersed between the mystery. Clement is a very humorous character and I enjoyed his observations and some of his slightly unchristian remarks. This blend of wit and mystery makes THE MURDER AT THE VICARAGE just as readable and enjoyable today as it was upon release in 1930!

Because of #worldbookday and #independentbookstoreday I dropped into my favourite hometown indie bookshop TWICE this past week to mark the occasions. 🥰📚 Though it wasn't my initial plan, I ended up grabbing two amazing examples of one of my favourite sub-genres of modern American literature : southern gothic. 🦇 'The Heart is a Lonely Hunter' fully changed my brain chemistry as a reader, but I haven't read this short fiction collection by Carson McCulllers yet. Very excited. 🤓 And I didn't even need to look through the table of contents for this complete Flannery O'Connor collection cause it needed to be in my collection IMMEDIATELY. Read 24 was another in the current trend of Greek myth retellings. I have really enjoyed many such retellings and so was looking forward to this book. Unfortunately, it didn’t quite hit the spot for me. The voices of the three goddesses narrating the stories didn’t feel right, there was no individuality for the narrators, each just a vessel of the same flaws and ego. There is nothing new being brought to the myths so, as someone who has been reading many different novels based on these characters, it gave me nothing new. This may be a better novel for someone who is new to the current Greek myth trope. Another absolute corker by Caroline. I loved the previous books by her and this one didn’t disappoint either. Once I started, it was hard to put down. We meet Fran and Caroline at the airport, and they couldn’t be more different. You could tell straight away they weren’t going to get on, despite Fran’s repeated attempts. There are so many characters that are simply fabulous dotted throughout, and no bad ones! The week progresses and so much happens, certainly not a dull moment! A bit predictable in places, but an excellent cosy read that comes with one warning - do not read when hungry!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 Have you read this one? What did you think?

I went in thinking it’ll be a lighthearted funny book about a man getting to write a relationship/life column for a newspaper but what I got was so unfunny. Full of ableism, misogyny and racial slurs definitely reflective of the time it was written but not reflective of the type of books I like to read. Lizzy and Brodie were just hilarious. I could not stop my laughter. From the time they met, up until the end, there was never a dull moment between them. The scenes with their friends were also entertaining, especially the conversations with Sully. Hopefully we get to read his story too☺️. Overall, this was a fun and quick read. One wish that I had for this book was more of Lizzy and Brodie after they officially got together. It just felt that it ended abruptly. ✨ Una luna sin miel ✨ ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 🌸 Este es de los últimos libros que leí el año pasado.. lo sé todavía voy por ahí poniéndome al día 😅🤦🏻♀️ 🌸Tuve un gran bloqueo lector desde agosto hasta el mes de diciembre, en el que conseguí terminar dos libros. Este fue uno de ellos. 🌸Esta historia me la habían recomendado hacía ya mucho tiempo y ha sido un gran acierto. 🌸Me he reído mucho y la he terminado en tan solo dos días. Era el momento ideal, una novela fresca y divertida, con mucho salsero. También ha sido ideal el formato. Creo que voy a retomar los audiolibros porque necesito leer, pero cada día me cuesta más hacerlo en papel e incluso en digital. “The Indifferent Stars Above,” by Daniel James Brown. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 •••••••••• April certainly has been a good month for reading for me! This was one of the first books I purchased when I went to America last year (shout out to Barnes and Nobles in Honolulu!) and glad I found this book. I first found out about this book and the harrowing story of the Donner Party through my favourite podcast, Last Podcast on the Left, where they did a three part series on the Donner Party, and they used this book for a lot of their research and a primary source. In April 1846, Sarah Graves and a group of pioneers set off for a better life west to California from Illinois. As soon as they reach the Nevada mountains, heavy snow sets in and makes the journey incredibly hard to continue. Weeks go by and the Donner party are cold and desperate, and soon resort to the unthinkable to survive… As brutal and gut wrenching as this book can be, Brown creates an atmosphere for his readers so we understand how dangerous and difficult this journey would have been in 1846. The level of detail and description Brown goes into regarding every step of the Donner Party journey makes you feel like you’re there with them. This is such a well documented book and definitely one of the most memorable nonfiction works I’ve read in a while. Whilst this book may not be uplifting and bleak at times, if you are interested in American history or pioneer life, I would highly recommend this book. Maybe check the trigger warnings before reading, but this is very much a book I could not put down. "Why not say that you made a choice, that you knew what you were doing was wrong, and that you did it anyway? Why continue coasting on your trauma? " "All I’m saying is that trauma doesn’t get you a lifelong get-out-of-jail-free card. It also doesn’t necessarily confer wisdom, or the right to pontificate." This was an interesting read. I had seen this book all over bookstagram and I was happy to find a copy in my local library. Initially the book is focused predominantly on Greta and Big Swiss, and I was wondering often why Greta reacted the way that she did in a lot of situations. The later half of the book looks exactly into this aspect. Greta is older than Big Swiss age-wise, but there is so much that she has brushed under the carpet and not confronted, it becomes apparent how her childhood has affected so many other areas of her life. It's like coming full circle on the character. Jen Beargin's writing is so strong and articulate and does so much justice to both central characters - Big Swiss and Greta. My only dislike with this book was the lengthy and unnecessary descriptions about Greta's house and the animals and insects. The other thing was the references, I didn't understand them but appreciate that these were due to the cultural differences. My most favorite aspect, which is also continuous throughout the book, were the conversations during the therapy sessions. Holly Jackson is such an incredible writer, anything she writes, I will read 🤩 To me, this was the perfect definition of a well-paced YA thriller! The twists, the turns, the overall plot of this book! Amazing! I couldn’t put it down. Jackson has such a brilliant way of writing third person POVS that are enticing and emotionally-relatable. I’m not normally a fan of third person POVs but every Holly Jackson character is so unique and well fleshed out. I truly felt like I was Bel throughout reading this book. When she was scared, I was scared. When she was angry I was angry. I also really enjoy the family dynamics of this book, the secrets and lies. I didn’t know who to trust, and it had me gasping and on the edge of my seat at every chapter! For anyone, who wants a well-plotted thriller/mystery, with twists and turns in every chapter, I highly recommend! Book review time! 📚 I’ve had this on my bookshelf for ages and I’ve been waiting for the right time to start it. I always find that if I have that attitude I never get round to reading it 🤦🏻♀️ This book has the level of adventure that reminds me of the sort of creativity books had to me when I was growing up. Sounds a bit sad I know. Since reading a lot of fantasy it sometimes seems a little formulaic to me but this book really was unpredictable. The concept of the Tower of Babel and the different floors and the surreal worldbuilding was superb. Senlin was a great character who was awkward and booksmart but a fish out of water. I really liked his character development too. I’ve heard the next book is not as good 🤷🏻♀️ not sure how much truth there is to it but I’ll definitely give it a go. There’s something very Gulliver Travelsque about this book. I would say the setting is quite Victorian/steam punk inspired. Personally I think it’s one of the most innotative books I’ve read for some time and I was thankful for the escapism it provided me. 🫰🏻So This is Ever After! I read this last month and included it in my monthly wrap up but it needed its own post! I had to return it to my library as one of my students kept asking about it (I really raved about it) and so I don’t have it in its own photo by itself- I’m going to buy my own copy so that I can show it off on this page when I want 😍 I am also so obsessed with the cover! This was a character driven, YA queer romantasy that was so fun and wholesome. It was inclusive in ways that felt genuine and not box ticking, and it gave me all the warm and fuzzy feels you want from a romance that was also age appropriate for teens. It was a book that’s all about what happens post defeat of the baddie, and is centred on finding love. It doesn’t have a lot of world building nor magic system explanation, but that sat fine with me given the size of the book, the overall plot and genre. The mystery aspect was intriguing. The romance aspect was beautiful. The characters were engaging and likeable. All in all, a very enjoyable read! 📚 Book Review 📚 The Nesting by C.J Cooke ⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 Deep in the forest of Norway, Lexi finds a fresh start with Tom and his two daughters working as their nanny. But Lexi’s telling lies and she’s not the only one. This forest and family have a past and in the woods, a dark presence lurks… I really enjoyed The Lighthouse Witches by this author so I was excited to read this one but it did fall a little flat for me. The location and the folklore stories were really interesting and added to the creepy feeling, Lexi and Aurelia were both flawed and unreliable narrators and you never fully knew what was real and what was imagined. However the end fell a little flat for me, Lexi’s secret was forgiven seemingly overnight and the prologue to the book made absolutely no sense when I re read it after finishing the book. Also the supernatural element to the story didn’t seem to fit with the main storyline so all in all a mixed bag for me this one. It certainly won’t put me off reading the other books I have on my shelf of theirs though. #bookreview #happysunday #booktok #weekend
