**EDIT : THE 14/16 IS GONE. Now, you know me - I love a sparkle moment. But on a dress?! That's next level 😍 I had a big ol' chunk of some stretchy lurex that's been sat up and had a bunch of ideas lined up for it but I could never commit to any of them - maybe it was my brain telling me to wait on it. Then it hit me. This worked so well as a top, so why not transform it into a dress? Got up at around 4am, chucked on some of my stories to work on the idea while it was fresh - I'm so glad that ran with the idea because this just SCREAMS glam. The fabric is so stretchy and forgiving, it is great for pretty much everybody 🥰 "How can I get one?", I hear you cry. It may be late in the day, but it’s still May 1st in my time zone, and the first day of #thevintagefashionchallenge ! I’m not sure I’ve ever done a proper introduction, and now seems as good a time as any! I’m Sarah! I’ve been sewing since I was about 10, I’m currently in my thirties, and that leaves a lot of years in between for messing around and experimenting. I started off solely sewing costumes, but in February of 2020 decided to make a vintage dress to wear to Dapper Day at Disneyland in April. We all know what happened the following month, and so I just kept on sewing vintage clothing. I’ve always loved vintage-inspired clothes (not me trying to find the perfect pencil skirt in the Macy’s junior’s department circa 2003…), and after only sewing historical and fantasy gowns, vintage dresses were a nice mental break during a stressful time. When I’m not sewing, I’m living in the San Francisco Bay Area where I was born and raised with my husband and two cats, and helping folks get help with their computer problems. My husband and I work together and still aren’t sick of each other, which I would consider a win! I love Star Trek 🖖 and nerd out about Tudor and Ancient Egyptian history, studied Early Modern literature in school and still get starry-eyed dissecting verse, and did a 7-year long stint selling bridal gowns and styling brides “Say Yes to the Dress” style. Do you ever buy a fabric for a specific pattern or project and then wind up using it for something else entirely? That’s what happened with this blue fabric! Some fabric I buy because I love it with no particular project in mind, but this I thought for sure was going to be another B6412, but I just lost enthusiasm for that idea and let this sit in my stash for way too long. I’d been wanting to make up Vogue V8789 View A for literal years and finally decided to bite the bullet and do it, and pulled this fabric out to use for my wearable muslin and… I absolutely love the pairing. It feels like it was meant to be, and I’m so happy I didn’t wind up using it for that B6412 I’d originally envisioned. Speaking of V8789, I feel like I’m late to the party on this one! I know it’s a well-loved pattern, and I actually made View B into a Christmas dress last year, even though I thought I’d get around to making View A first. Has anyone made View A on the straight of grain? I was debating if I should open and wear this vintage paper dress from a 1960s @hallmark (2nd pic) or keep it pristine in its package, so I decided to put off the decision by reading a little about the history of this disposable garment. The dresses featured not only bold and graphic prints, but also political candidates (Richard Nixon and Bobby Kennedy), musicians (The Beatles), and advertising (Kentucky Fried Chicken, Baby Ruth, Butterfinger, Campbell’s Soup). You could even buy a paper dress to coordinate with throwaway party supplies! The craze started with a mail in offer from Scott Paper offering coupons and a dress shipped to you for $1.25.
