Admiration for Philodendron Sodiroi, today, a plant with beautiful silver variegation on green leaves supported by brilliant red stems. Currently, there is stigma around some stock containing mosaic virus rather than true variegation. Well, working at a nursery, I came across the rumored infected Sodiroi or possible random variegated plant as it was the only one in stock showing the possible mutation. I suspect this could go either way, and if it ends badly for me, I think I saved hundreds of other plants from infecting other homes. Anywho, this is my plant to show love to, usually climbing. A similar unnamed variety is also rumored to circulate that is a Vining or crawling variety that does not naturally climb. The two plants I claimed appeared very contrasting to one another, which is what provoked my desire to acquire both plants, and so far, both have brought me joy. DsMV has different appearance in different species, it doesn’t look the same in Gloriosum as it does in Verrucosum. It can’t be treated, there is no cure so the best thing is to discard the plant. Even with a virus the plant can look normal from time to time in good conditions, but it’s still there and will come back. I know a lot of people say ”if it’s sick i’ll just keep it separated from the other plants” and i just don’t understand why anyone would want to keep a sick plant with potential to spread a disease. These are some pictures of Philos tested positive for DsMV specifically - but there is TONS of Mosaic viruses so even if a test is negative for DsMV it could be other viruses. The only way to know if a plant has a virus is to have it tested, but if all symptoms match it’s likely to be infected. I was hesitant to post this because i didn’t take the pictures myself - these are pictures in my phone that i saved from forums and groups. Dahlia Viruses. You WILL experience them at some point, there is NO cure and they ARE here to stay! So what does one do to stay on top of these silent dahlia killers? Do your research and know the different types of viruses. Today I am showcasing Mosaic Virus in Dahlias. Mosaic is easy to recognize by the zig zagging yellow patterning in the dahlia leaves. Dahlias that have a virus must be carefully dug up and the entire plant destroyed. DO NOT COMPOST! Destroy the plant, tubers and all. We have a burn pit for ours. I also take extra measures after digging up a sick dahlia and sterilize all my gardening tools with a 15% bleach water solution . I also have this solution in a big spray bottle that I carry on my tool belt when I am cutting dahlias and disbuddibg. In-between each and every plant all my cutting tools and hands get sprayed with the bleach solution. Am I going overboard? Probably. But it's also vigilant dahlia health care! These practices can start minimizing the spread of viruses. Bugs are another culprit of spreading dahlia viruses. That's why it is so important to supress the bad bugs by introducing the good bugs into your dahlia patch. A few weeks ago I pulled about 10 dahlia plants from my beds and put them back into pots because they looked suspicious for viruses. Yesterday I dumped most of those plants into the trash because the signs became more and more obvious over time despite adjusting for potential nutrient shortages. Verrone's Obsidian was one of those varieties that were culled yesterday. Today I went to take the trash out and found she had made one last ditch effort to do her job and fully opened her first bloom. So we will enjoy one single bloom from this variety in our windowsill. I'm very diligent about pulling any plants that look suspicious. Which is quite the growth for me considering a few years ago I had a hard time even deadheading flowers because I hated killing things before their time was done. Sad, devastated, upset, angry are only a few of the words I can use to describe how I feel right now. 😭😢😥🤬. Apparently one of these ladies has a mosaic virus of some type, therefore, odds are, so does her sister. Took one down yesterday and the other is getting chopped right now. They had such potential 😕.
