Buitenexpositie - "ik zie jou" op het Stadhuisplein in Zaandam. Ieder mens wil gezien en erkend worden in zijn of haar waardigheid. Om daaraan bij te dragen slaan Museum of Humanity en COA Zaandam de handen ineen. Veel bewoners van het azc in Zaandam hebben in hun vaderland een vak geleerd of beschikken over een mooi talent. Zo werkte de één jarenlang als dokter, terwijl de ander bijvoorbeeld briljant viool kan spelen. Voor veel mensen in Zaanstad is dat niet veel anders. Ook zij kunnen bijvoorbeeld werken als juf, automonteur of dol zijn op fotografie. Om bewoners en nieuwkomers kennis met elkaar te laten maken, en om de waardigheid van bewoners te bekrachtigen, verbinden we een Zaankanter aan een bewoner van het azc. Concreet betekent dat dat we op zoek gaan naar 30 duo’s die iets gemeenschappelijks hebben. Dat kan een vak zijn, een hobby of passie, of een speciale vaardigheid. Wat het ook is, uiteindelijk zoeken we naar de meer universele verbindingen en is het een ontmoeting tussen twee gelijkwaardige en unieke personen. Wie zijn ze? Wat herkennen ze in elkaar? Wat zijn hun angsten en dromen? Zouden ze elkaars vrienden kunnen zijn? In een buitenexpositie komen deze verhalen in woord en beeld tot leven. Gisteravond was ik aanwezig bij het zakelijke netwerk Dreambuilders van @museumofhumanity in Zaandam. Een samenkomst gericht op het creëren van een wereld waarin iedereen zich echt gezien voelt. In de huidige samenleving is er een groeiend verlangen om empathie, begrip en eenheid te bevorderen, zowel op de werkvloer als in gemeenschappen. Dreambuilders omarmt de overtuiging dat door aandacht te schenken, te observeren en te luisteren, we “meesterwerken” binnen elk individu kunnen ontdekken. Elke persoon, op zijn eigen unieke manier, is een prachtig verhaal dat gehoord wil en mag worden. Het Museum of Humanity staat voor positiviteit en creativiteit, actief polarisatie bestrijdend via (foto)tentoonstellingen, evenementen en trainingssessies o.a. bij bedrijven en scholen. Het zijn de gezamenlijke inspanningen van Dreambuilders die deze initiatieven mogelijk maken. Gedurende de avond waren er presentaties over de activiteiten van Dreambuilders en een lezing door Stephan Ummelen over zijn boek: Betekenis en Bullshit: zingeving en marketing in de betekeniseconomie. Stephan is auteur, adviseur, onderzoeker en spreker m.b.t. de thema’s betekenis en vertrouwen in organisaties. In zijn recent verschenen boek ‘Betekenis en Bullshit’ beschrijft hij hoe het werkende leven een steeds grotere rol speelt in een zoektocht naar betekenis en zingeving onder medewerkers en hun klanten. Tijdens het event nam Stephan ons mee hoe iedere organisatie menswaardigheid en waardengedreven werken centraal kan stellen, op weg naar de betekeniseconomie van de toekomst. Interessse? The Passion of Jesus has grown enormously over the years and is performed in London, Trafalgar Square every Good Friday. Running for over ten years, this performance has become a permanent fixture of London’s Easter weekend and attracts thousands of spectators, embracing those of all faiths and none. It tells the story of Jesus being arrested and tried by the Sanhedrin. According to the Gospel of Mark, Jesus was then crucified between two convicted thieves and died by the ninth hour of the day. This is when soldiers put a sign atop his cross that said: “Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews”. Good Friday is a Christian holiday commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and his death at the Calvary. Museum of Humanity heeft sinds december een fantastische Raad van Advies. Wijze mensen die ons helpen om de organisatie verder te versterken en te laten groeien. Een van die mooie mensen is @gezasafuagyei Hij werkt sinds 2012 bij @aholddelhaize en is momenteel director strategic partnerships. Daarvoor vervulde hij diverse functies bij @ibm Museum of Humanity leerde hij via een collega kennen, die hem vertelde over een fotograaf met een bijzondere droom waarin Kofi Annan een rol speelde. Gez komt, net als Annan, uit Ghana, nam contact op met @rubentimman en de rest is geschiedenis. Sinds 2017 bouwt Gez achter de schermen mee aan Museum of Humanity als adviseur. Ook is hij een van de drijvende krachten achter de pop-up exposities in het Duitse Warburg (2019) en Ahlen (2021). A part of the Andes Mountains, Rainbow Mountain can be found a few hours outside of Cusco. The remote area is home to the Quechua people, descendants of the Incas, many of whom have never heard the gospel. Most days, the locals bring their horses to the trailhead, often with some of their small children running along. Hoping to make some money, they offer tourists rides. Because the elevation is around 15,000 ft., several tourists usually take them up on their offer. After dropping the first group off, the locals run back down the mountain with their horses in hopes of catching another ride and making more money for their families. 55 year-old curtain tailor Ruben Gutiérrez Escobar from Cusco gets up at 5:00 am every day to open his workshop, then he works in the field until sunset, growing potatoes, beans and corn for his household. He goes to bed at about 10.00 pm, and earns the equivalent of about $20 a day, depend on a season. „We have very little support here, all the money goes to Lima and in Lima, it gets lost. Here, we don’t get a penny- said Escobar. It is very odd indeed when you see floods of tourist every single day in Cusco but the reality is different and Ruben is right. Most of the working class people in Peru are not happy. It is part of a structural problem of an ever-increasing centralization of power in Lima ever since independence from Spain in 1821. Four out of every ten people in Cusco are poor despite the fact that in the last fifteen years in the region there has been an investment of around 80 billion Soles. The Andes region has one of the highest poverty rates in Peru. Due to its isolation, difficult topography, and relative lack of connection to the modern economy, poverty is an everyday reality for many residents of the Andean region. Relying on agriculture as their main livelihood and absent educational opportunities, many Andean people remain in poverty. In 2018, a mayor in a highlands municipality of Cuzco defined two of the main problems as malnutrition and a lack of support for subsistence farming throughout the region. These Andean communities are often far from cities and are frequently forced to fend for themselves to secure education, health, and other government services. The children of these Andean communities often suffer from a lack of proper nutrition, which many times translates to illnesses like anemia. Although malnutrition has been curtailed throughout the country in the last few decades, these highland Andean communities are still suffering greatly. The highland Sierra contains the Andes, with peaks over 6,000m (20,000ft), most of the country's mineral resources (silver, zinc, lead, copper and gold) and the greater part of its livestock. Roads in this area wind up, down and around mountains, so travelling in this area is often time-consuming and could be done on horseback. The Peruvian Paso horse is a gem of Peruvian culture that emerged from the colonial era and is still prized today. When the Spanish arrived to conquer the Americas, they brought with them their classic Andalusian horses – the most outstanding breed of riding horses that existed in Europe at that time. In particular, horses arrived to Peru with Francisco Pizarro in 1531. In Colonial times in Peru, these horses were needed for transportation and breeding stock. For the conquistadors, the most important qualities they looked for in a good horse was that it had stamina, beauty and a smooth all-day riding gait that was comfortable for riding long distances. As a photojournalist, we need to be focused on our own projects and have faith in the fact that the way we see the world is unique. If we really put our heart and soul into it, we will make images that are interesting. Our profession is hugely romanticised, but ultimately if we want to survive in it, we need some level of business knowledge.It's a job and people forget that, so we need a business plan, we need determination and discipline, and we need talent and pinch of luck. When we finally making some money, some aspect of that money has to go towards our future security.We need to be investing in something – whether it's property or the markets or something else. These are the kinds of things very few photojournalists are talking about. Think about the pension time,when we can’t run after the protesters anymore. Unlike many professions, photojournalism doesn't offer a clear career path. If we’re lucky enough to be offered a one-off dream freelance assignment on a subject or issue we want to cover, it's important to seize that chance. Being a successful freelancer means regularly coming up with strong, original ideas and turning those ideas into high-quality bodies of work. It gives us the freedom to work on our own projects, though financial survival depends on getting regular work and this path doesn't offer the security of a staff job. Very few of us doing this job are wealthy or successful – the rewards you get from it are based on passion and on the fact that we genuinely care about the issues. It's not an easy career choice. Ieder mens heeft een verhaal, en dat geldt zeker voor Saifi. We ontmoeten haar in een rijkere buurt van Dhaka, de hoofdstad van Bangladesh. Ze is nu een succesvolle manager bij een internationale projectontwikkelaar en verbaast ons als ze vertelt over de hobbelige weg die ze heeft afgelegd om te komen waar ze nu is. Saifi komt uit een dorpje in het noorden van Bangladesh. Typisch een plek waar een vrouw geen kans krijgt om zich te ontwikkelen. Dat lijkt ook het lot van Saifi als ze op haar dertiende moet trouwen met haar neef. Het is het begin van veel ellende. “Zolang ik mijn man ken, liep hij de kantjes eraf,” vertelt ze. “Hij teerde graag op het geld van zijn familie en verspilde dat aan drank en drugs. Werken deed hij niet en ik voelde me verantwoordelijk. Ik wilde studeren en me ontwikkelen. Helaas accepteerde de familie dit niet en zo veranderde ik in het zwarte schaap van de familie. Elke avond viel ik huilend in slaap.” Het bijzondere aan Saifi is dat ze haar eigen plan trekt. Ze krijgt het toch voor elkaar om te gaan studeren en belandt uiteindelijk – met haar zoon Abedin – in Dhaka. Van haar man hoort ze nooit iets en dus leeft ze als een alleenstaande moeder. Door te studeren en hard te werken, bevrijdt ze zichzelf uit de houdgreep van haar familie. Inmiddels heeft Saifi dus een goede baan als manager en dat ervaart ze elke dag als een cadeautje. “Ik moest van ver komen en ik ben zo blij dat ik heb volgehouden! Ik hoop nu andere vrouwen in kwetsbare posities te inspireren. Als je bereid bent om toegewijd te blijven aan je droom is er heel veel mogelijk. A three day Energy Intelligence Forum was held at the Intercontinental Hotel Park Lane from 17th till 19th of October 2023 which brought together fossil fuel executives and government ministers. Hundreds of demonstrators faced heavy police presence as they protest against the influence of the fossil fuel industry on UK and global climate politics. 👋 Dit is @hoogduint Aangenaam. Ruim twee jaar geleden kwam hij op ons pad. Hij wilde graag wat doen, want van thuiszitten werd hij alleen maar ongelukkig. Wel voegde Ton er luchtig aan toe dat hij niet heel veel gevoel had bij onze portretten en het gedachtegoed. Ja, dát is Ton ten voeten uit, weten we nu: een goudeerlijke man die zegt wat hij denkt en doet wat hij zegt. Ruim twee jaar later is diezelfde Ton soms dag en nacht betrokken bij Museum of Humanity als vrijwillige medewerker. De man die ‘niet zoveel met de foto’s had’ is een van de drijvende krachten achter onze groeiende beweging. Ton regelt alles in het museum, stuurt ons ‘leger’ van vrijwilligers aan en doet daarnaast ontzettend veel bureauwerk. Maar bovenal heeft hij een scherp oog voor mensen aan de rand en heeft hij een broertje dood aan onrecht. Dus helpt hij kennissen met z’n technische kennis en staat hij klaar voor een zieke vriend. Wat doet Ton niet? Ton, vandaag brengen we heel graag deze ode aan jou, verrijkt met dit prachtige portret van AnneMarie Ostendorf. We zijn enorm blij met jou als rots in de branding bij het museum, maar bovenal als mens. Je humor, je meelevendheid, je gedrevenheid en je eerlijkheid. More people are depending on food banks than ever before in Britain, new figures show, as “ever-increasing” numbers of households – including pensioners, NHS staff and teachers – seek help amid the cost of living crisis. New research by the Independent Food Aid Network (Ifan), found that almost 90% of food banks surveyed reported increased demand in December 2022 and January 2023 compared with a year earlier. Half of the 85 organisations running 154 food banks that responded said if demand rose further they would either have to cut support or turn people away. 12.09.2023 ExCel Center.London The Defence and Security Equipment International (DSEI) arms fair is taking place at the ExCel Centre in London. Small group of protesters and activists from across of UK was opposing the event explaining that the deals done at DSEI lead to death and devastation across the world. DSEI has been accused several times over the years of facilitating the sale of banned equipment including weapons designed for torture and cluster munitions. The UK's main arms deals go to the United States, India, France, Germany, Italy, Israel, Oman, South Africa, Turkey, South Korea, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia, respectively.
