High notes of Mona Foma (Festival of Music and Art) literally rotate around a bottle of gin. Activating the sense of taste, Boats 2024 by Lagos- and Berlin-based artist Emeka Ogboh uses alcohol as a medium to transmit cultural heritage and probe the global economy founded on migration. The project title references the right-wing slogan ‘STOP THE BOATS!’ coined by Tony Abbott during the election that made him Australian Prime Minister. Ogboh’s multi-part multi-site work, curated by Ineke Dane and Emma Pike, exposes the dark history of Australia’s migration practices, including the incarceration of migrants in breach of United Nations laws and the ongoing stigmatising of released detainees. ‘Boats’ combines images, soundscapes, billboards, aromas, and taste encounters on Mona’s menus and underground bars. The newsprint wrap around the gin connecting also to the offsite Detached space with its old English printing press.
