A must do in DC for fans of historic homes @hillwoodmuseum Only child and heir to the Post Cereal fortune, Marjorie Merriweather Post was an American businesswoman, philanthropist and socialite. She married and divorced four times and was the mother of three daughters. Marjorie Merriweather Post managed three homes. Hillwood, Mar-A-Lago and Topridge in the Adirondacks. She had a lot of similarities to "our" Isabella Stewart Gardner. Both left their homes and art collections as a museum. We were given a lovely tour by Joanna (photo 2. The tour was included with admission. The museum also has a special exhibit featuring Paris and the greenhouse full of orchids. The gardens, cafe and gift shop are all worth a visit. Today is Holocaust Remembrance Day. One of the toughest parts of visiting the Holocaust Memorial Museum is the room of shoes, collected from the people the Nazis burned in the gas chambers at the concentration camps during World War II. Because they were made of leather, they were the only things that survived. When you enter this room, no one is talking or laughing. As a matter of fact, some people, including myself, begin crying and feeling physically ill. I know this is not a lighthearted post, but we need to remember what happened back then so it never happens again. We need to remember where blind hatred and ignorance can take our world, and make sure that every day we show more kindness and understanding, spread love as much as we can. The museum’s logo is “Never Forget”. I never will.

Henry, the African Bush Elephant Back in 2018, I went to a talk, “Spying on Whales”, at the Museum of Natural History. They mentioned that the fossils exhibit was in the process of being redone. Worth the wait. But I’d pay good money to see an AI elephant robot roaming around the atrium. Or an actual un-extinct wooly mammoth. Or an extremely realistic hologram. The estate was owned by Marjorie Merriweather Post and is now a museum filled with French porcelain and objects from Imperial Russia. First up, Aileen Fuchs, the new president and executive director of the National Building Museum (and the second woman to lead the National Building Museum in its 40-year history!). Aileen and I chatted about the latest exhibition - "The Wall/El Muro: What is a Border Wall?" - and the new climate initiative the museum has instituted. Second, the cheese lady, Jill Erber of Cheesetique! Usually, Jill and I go down multiple rabbit holes (or perhaps it's mice holes) on our mutual love of cheese. Not on this show. Jill and I go down another road altogether and discussed the positive insights into the Industry and identifying the “Gifts of Covid”. This was a really good show (I know I say that a lot). Royal murder mystery in ancient Egypt? There is speculation that someone in Ramses III’s harem maliciously killed him around 1155 B.C. Although his mummy was uncovered in 1886, recent discoveries show that there might have been a knife wound deep in his neck. They also found one of his toes missing, probably from another assassin’s axe. Incredible how modern technology can solve a 3,000-year-old murder! A visit to the @phillipscollection Inside Outside Upside Down exhibit. The exhibit opened last week and I must say it was one of the most beautiful, provocative, emotive and stirring presentations I’ve attended. 65 pieces and stories were chosen to display an array of experiences and perspectives of the global pandemic we are still in the midst of but through the lens of local Dc artists. One thing about this experience is that even if you grab a bunch of artists from one place, the stories will have a universal appeal because almost everyone in the world was going through this at the same time. I felt honored and my insides went crazy walking through and taking a dive into the minds and the mental space of these artists during this “unprecedented” period in history. I wish my carousel could hold more because I loved so many but these were some of my faves. Artists are tagged. A trip to the National Gallery of Art. Such a huge duo of museums which I truly love. Only this time out of all the times I’ve been did I actually pay attention the rhyme or reason behind the displays. The gallery attempts to give a comprehensive walk through the most significant of art styles, eras and movements - the west building focuses on classic art styles we know and love and one of the most extensive collections of Monet paintings I’ve seen; the East building is a stunning journey through the modern and contemporary art movements. I actually didn’t make it through every section so I’ll definitely be back. Founded back in the year 1937, it is the national art museum in Washington, D.C. This art gallery was privately established by a joint resolution of the United States Congress. In 1936, Mellon wrote to President Franklin D. Roosevelt offering a proposal to construct the building for this art gallery and also fund it himself. I have always loved a good dome 😍 Domes were built in ancient Mesopotamia, and they have been found in Persian, Hellenistic, Roman, and Chinese architecture in the ancient world, as well as among a number of indigenous building traditions throughout the world. The domes of European Renaissance architecture spread from Italy in the early modern period, while domes were frequently employed in Ottoman architecture at the same time. This week, the Woodrow Wilson House would like to honor Armenia and the strong relationship between our two countries. April 24th of this month, Armenians all over the world commemorated the 106th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. The Armenian Ambassador visited the Washington Cathedral and laid a wreath in memory of President Woodrow Wilson, who voiced Armenian issues and supported their rights. The Armenian genocide refers to the physical annihilation of the Armenian people living in the Ottoman Empire from spring 1915 through autumn 1916. It was the first genocide of the 20th century. About one and a half million Armenians died during the genocide, either in massacres and individual killings, or from systematic ill-treatment, exposure, starvation, and other cruel and torturous acts. Woodrow Wilson offered much support to Armenians during the genocide. He proposed Wilsonian Armenia which refers to the boundary configuration of the First Republic of Armenia in the Treaty of Sevrès, as drawn by U.S. president Woodrow Wilson’s Department of State. However, it was rejected by the U.S. senate. To this day, Turkey has refused to recognize the mass killings as genocide, and justice for Armenians is yet to be found. Saturday, March 24th, Joe Biden became the first U.S. President to recognize the Armenian Genocide.
