I had a really interesting visit this morning to see the Royal Armouries at Fort Nelson and the Standing with Giants exhibition commemorating the 258 people that died in the Falklands War. There is exactly the right number of soldiers, sailors and 3 civilians. It is free to get into the museum and very worthwhile with a lot of interesting historic cannons and guns as well as this amazing exhibition, so please visit. I had the rare chance to visit Winterthur in northern Delaware again. Even in the off-season, it's lovely. Soon, it will be spring in earnest and the hills will be blue with squill, then carpeted with hostas. The quarry garden is an exquisite jewel worth a visit on its own. Bill and I had the privilege of visiting Doylestown, Pa, home of the Mercer Museum and Fonthill Castle. Yes, Pennsylvania has a castle. Henry Chapman Mercer (1856--1930), an original, built the Moravian Tileworks, a museum entirely out of poured concrete devoted to the artifacts and tools of daily living, and a castle to live in, also built entirely from poured concrete. Words and pictures do not do them justice. You have to see them. Everywhere you look, you'll be amazed and overwhelmed. Don't visit just the museum or just the castle (the Tileworks may be less interesting to you). Make sure you see them both! The museum is so overwhelming you may have to pay for two tours. The castle is similar. Because of their complexity, tours are limited in size and timed. Put Fonthill Castle and the Mercer Museum on your list of places to visit. Beaminster museum: Within a listed converted chapel, nestled behind the stonework like a magpies hoard, is a vast and eclectic array of artefacts, finds and ephemera. Thematic sections may seem to stand alone from each other but the thread of the town and its locality pulls all the displays together just as strings are pulled together on a purse. My expectations for the length of my stay fell far short and I wandered round for over an hour. Still in that time I felt there was so much that would have to be further read, absorbed and enjoyed on a future visit. The research and dedication is palpable and evident in the displays. A more thorough display on the local history of pubs I have never seen!! The folders full of apothecary labels also make for a fascinating browse. 🌟 PAULA REGO Little did I know that within a couple days after visiting Casa Das Histórias Paula Rego - that this incredibly powerful and influential artist would pass away. This museum was one of the highlights of my trip, the architecture alone stands proud and demands attention from its surroundings, the burnt red exterior pulling you into its womb. Inside, the vast walls and light filtered spaces are home to one of the most important collections of Paula Rego's work, which contains many drawings, paintings and etchings, often donated by the artist herself, and expands across roughly 50 years of her artistic career. Whilst in Lisbon I kept telling fellow travellers that they must visit the museum. As one of Portugal's most famous and recognisable artists, the experience of witnessing Rego's experimental techniques, internal world's, and politically charged work is not to be missed - art is after all, another way to learn and absorb another country and its culture. I feel blessed that I had the opportunity to visit when I did - there was a serendipity about it. In the Indian state of Kerala, elephants are decorated during temple festivals. They wear a distinctive golden head covering called a nettipattam, which is often translated into English as an elephant caparison. When there is a procession of Gods and goddesses in the streets around the temple, the decorated elephant and the mahout will be walking in front of the crowd, drawing the attention of the people. The chiming of bell hung below the neck of the elephant will definitely make the people turn around. In local festivals in Kerala, participation of a richly caparisoned elephant is a must. Elephants also carry the deity during the annual festivals. At some temples the gold plated caparisons ("nettipattam"), bells, and necklaces are quite common. At Kudalmanikyam temple, Kerala 17 elephants are engaged in the daily ceremony to the accomplishment of Pancari Melam(drum). The Masterworks team spent a wonderful evening last night viewing "Faith Ringgold: American People" at the New Museum, for our most recent bonding art walk. The team loved seeing her sculptures, paintings, story quilts and more. It was amazing to see how Ringgold's work had evolved over the course of her nearly 60 year career! Her art proved to be just as thought provoking today as it was decades ago.
