I am officially a U.S. Botanical Garden volunteer after a long process! I applied May 16, 2023, was rejected in July because there wasn't room, was reached out to again about availability in August, did online training in September, had a first trial volunteer session in October, filled out paperwork and waited for my background check to clear for three months, finally got fingerprinted earlier in Feb, and picked up my official Architect of the Capitol USBG support badge yesterday! Today I had training at the gardens on leading the Orchid, Coffee, and Chocolate discovery carts! And then I walked around to visit my lovely orchids on display. Woo hoo! <워싱턴 DC 1일차/DC Day 1> 👇English version below 🇰🇷이번에는 미국의 수도 워싱턴 DC로 가볼게요! 저는 인턴십 덕분에 워싱턴 DC에서 세 달간 살았고 추가로 여행을 간 적이 있어서 소개할 게 정말 많은데 2주 동안 차근차근 소개할게요. 오늘은 내셔널 몰(𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗠𝗮𝗹𝗹) 동쪽에 있는 명소들부터 소개할게요. 여행 팁들 몇 개 드리고 시작할게요. 워싱턴 DC는 대중교통이 잘 돼 있고(1회 $2) 애플 페이로 ‘스마트립(SmarTrip)' 교통카드 등록할 수 있어요. 그리고 여름에는 한국보다 더울 수 있어서 탈수 예방을 위해 물을 넉넉히 챙기시고 야외활동은 덜 더운 오전에 하세요. 일단 ‘미국 국회의사당(𝗨𝗦 𝗖𝗮𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗼𝗹)’부터 가보시죠. 밖에서 봐도 멋진 이 건물은 사전예약을 통해 내부 투어도 볼 수 있고 저도 역시 들어가 봤어요. 안에 미국 역사를 그린 천장화, 위인들의 조각상들 등 예술 작품들도 많아요. 미국 의회 옆에는 ‘미국 의회 도서관(𝗟𝗶𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀)’이 있어요. 세계에서 가장 큰 도서관 중 하나인 이곳은 수천만 권을 넘게 소장하고 있으며 구텐베르크 성경 등 역사적으로 큰 의미를 가진 문서들도 궁전처럼 웅장한 공간들 안에 보존하고 있어요. 다음은 ‘대법원(𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘁)’을 보시죠. 그리스 파르테논 신전처럼 생긴 이 건물은 미국의 가장 중대한 사건들을 판결하는 곳이에요. 대법관은 임종할 때까지 임기가 이어져 특정 당이 과반을 잡으면 수십 년간 사법부의 정치적 입장이 잡혀요. 마지막으로 근처에 있는 ‘미국 식물원(𝗨𝗦 𝗕𝗼𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗰 𝗚𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗻)’에서 미국 전역에서 볼 수 있는 다양한 식물들을 보고 가세요. 다음 게시물에서는 내셔널 몰 서쪽을 소개할게요! 🇺🇸Welcome to Washington D.C., the nation’s capital! I was lucky to have lived there for three months, and I loved it so much that I visited again last spring. I’ll take another five posts and start with the east side of the 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗠𝗮𝗹𝗹. First, a few tips. DC has excellent public transit at $2/ride. You can get a SmarTrip card on Apple Pay to pay fares. Also note the hot summer weather. Pack lots of water to stay hydrated and get outside early when it’s cooler. Let’s start with the 𝗨.𝗦. 𝗖𝗮𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗼𝗹: the legislative branch (Congress). I booked an internal tour, where I saw many paintings of U.S. history and sculptures of famous historical figures. Now let’s hop over to the 𝗟𝗶𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀: one of the world’s largest libraries with tens of millions of books, including the Gutenberg Bible. Next, let’s visit the 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘁. It was built to resemble the Parthenon in Athens, temple to Athena, goddess of wisdom. It determines what’s legal and what’s not, causing several recent controversies. Lastly, we have the 𝗨𝗦 𝗕𝗼𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗰 𝗚𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗻 next door, home to plants from all across the country. In the next post, we’ll walk around the other side of the National Mall.
