In 1988 I was invited to accompany a group of 25 prominent U.S. songwriters over to the Soviet Union for a project called “Music Speaks Louder Than Words”. The U.S. songwriters were paired with counterparts from various countries in the U.S.S.R. It was an amazing, joyous trip, with stops in Tallinn, Moscow, St. Petersburg (then Leningrad) and Helsinki. Eleven of the many songs written were subsequently recorded and released on Epic Records, the album bearing the name of the project. Many tales to tell from that trip, but the reason I am thinking about it today is that stop in Tallin, Estonia. We were there in the midst of the country’s struggle to declare independence. Not long after we returned to the United States, their effort came to pass and of course, others ultimately followed. @lavamusicfestival Γέφυρες/Αχιλλέας Τιγκας - Χαρούλα Τσαλπαρά Οι Γέφυρες φιλοδοξούν να γίνουν ένα μουσικό σύνολο μελέτης τόσο του Μακάμ όσο και των Λαικών Δρόμων, αλλά και της σύνδεσης των δύο συστημάτων. Συναντιόμαστε κάθε Τρίτη. Χωρίς πολλά πολλά, έλα να παίξουμε, να βρούμε αυτά που μας ενώνουν μεγαλύτερη περιγραφή: Η μουσική του τόπου μας βασίζεται στη μουσική κληρονομιά δυο σπουδαίων θεωρητικών συστημάτων και αποτελεί φυσικό κράμα αυτής της μίξης. Δύο διαφορετικά μέταλλα, με την κατάλληλη αναλογία και στις κατάλληλες συνθήκες χαρίζουν τα ξεχωριστά τους στοιχεία σε ένα νέο μοναδικό μίγμα. Έτσι και το συγκερασμένο δυτικοευρωπαϊκό Ματζόρε Μινόρε σύστημα, στην όσμωση του με το οθωμανικό σύστημα Μακάμ –το οποίο διασώζει τόσο τη συλλογιστική της βυζαντινής μουσικής όσο και εν μέρει της μουσικής συλλογιστικής του αρχαίου κόσμου- , δημιουργεί τα «υβριδικά» ξεχωριστά μουσικά ιδιώματα του τόπου μας, που δεν είναι άλλος από την ύπαιθρο και τις πόλεις του ελλαδικού χώρου, των Βαλκανίων, της Μ. Ασίας και της βορειοανατολικής μεσογείου ευρύτερα. Στο μεγαλύτερο μέρος τους, τα ιδιώματα αυτά χαρακτηρίζονται από πολύ έντονη πρακτική φυσιογνωμία και προφορική διάδοση, γεγονός που ίσως να ευθύνεται κιόλας για τις παρεξηγήσεις και παρανοήσεις ορολογίας. Για τους μουσικούς που διαχειρίζονται τα ιδιώματα αυτά, και ιδιαίτερα για αυτούς που είναι χειριστές συγκερασμένων οργάνων, υπάρχει αρκετά μεγάλη ανάγκη εύρεσης μίας κοινής γλώσσας επικοινωνίας και διασαφήνισης του συστήματος με σκοπό τη μεγαλύτερη κατανόησή του. Αυτό είναι ένα κάλεσμα με σκοπό να μελετήσουμε τα φαινόμενα αυτά μέσω ενός αντιπροσωπευτικού ρεπερτορίου σε μορφή μουσικού συνόλου. Στόχος, να λειτουργήσουμε σα μια πραγματική μουσική «γέφυρα» μεταξύ των δύο κόσμων, να φτάσουμε λίγο πιο κοντά στην απάντηση του αιώνιου ερωτήματος «ποιος είμαι;» αλλά και να νιώσουμε τις πρωταρχικές αξίες της ίδιας της μουσικής, που δεν είναι άλλες από την έκφραση, την ευχαρίστηση και την επικοινωνία! On 22 August, the Music Festival of Mecklenburg-West Pomerania was held for the third time, hosted by Wittenburg’s late-Romanesque Church of St. Bartholomew. The performance of Mozart chamber music by 26-year-old American star pianist and composer Kit Armstrong was astounding. Armstrong only recently opened the Mostly Mozart Festival in New York as a soloist, and is already acknowledged by critics as a “musical phenomenon.” He had arranged some of the pieces especially for the evening, and presented them together with the Schumann Quartet and other award-winning virtuosi.
