Photographer: Nadav Kandar. “Early in 1976, with both the post-Watergate presidential election and the bicentennial celebration in mind, Rolling Stone approached Richard Avedon … . The result, published in Rolling Stone's Oct. 21, 1976, issue and taking up the entire feature well of the magazine, was a portfolio of 73 black-and-white portraits - formal, frank in a stylized way and, page after page after page, thoroughly absorbing. It was with that project very much in mind that The Times Magazine asked Nadav Kander - one of the more original and highly regarded portraitists at work just now — if he would like to photograph the administration of Barack Obama as it was being assembled. The result is what we have titled "Obama's People" - 52 full-page color portraits … The portraits were taken in mid-December and earlier this month in Chicago and Washington. The magazine's editor of photography, Kathy Ryan, along with two members of her staff, Kira Pollack and Stacey Baker, organized and oversaw the sessions. … Matt Bai, who has been the magazine's chief political writer through the last two presidential-election cycles, drew up the list of whom to photograph and also wrote the elegant essay that serves as an overture to the issue and the moment. The first photo book in my collection was “Yangtze: the long river” by Nadav Kander (Hatje Cantz Pub, 2010). I had received an Amazon gift card from a lab equipment vendor, and at the time I had just watched the documentary “Up the Yangtze”. The dystopian scenery in the documentary had had a strange, fascinating effect on me and I wanted to see and learn more about the changes that the region was going through following the construction of the Three Gorges dam. I liked the book so much that a few years later, when I heard about this other book from photographer Muge,”Going home” (Jiazazhi, 2013), focused on the human displacement caused by the construction of the dam, I didn’t hesitate one second to get a copy. Both books are great for different reasons and they’re almost complementary. Kander’s work is more centered on the large scale industrial and architectural paradoxes present in the region, and the human figure is skillfully placed in the frames to give a sense of the scale of the horrific, but strangely majestic, constructions. Muge’s photos on the other hand are a powerful depiction of the human tragedy caused by the enforcement of the dam project. Using the river as a metaphor for constant change, Kander attempted at every stage of the journey to relate and reflect the consequences of the incomprehensible and seemingly unnatural development in modern-day China. Kander never photographed further than twenty miles from the river itself. In the shadow of epic construction projects we see workers, fishermen, swimmers and even a man washing his motorbike in the river. Dense architecture gives way to mountains in the upper reaches towards the river's Tibetan source – a sparsely populated area where the stream is mostly broken ice and just ankle deep. Throughout the series, we can almost feel the weight of the humid air and haze of pollution, which Kander describes in muted tones occasionally enlivened by the smallest bright touches of clothing. Kander responded intuitively to a feeling that China is severing its roots – the resulting landscapes and documentary-inflected fictions weigh the human and environmental cost of China’s often brutal, dehumanising shift from state-controlled communism to state-sanctioned capitalism.
