What is this and why is it important? It's lichen in #Antarctica, growing on a boulder. Lichens are plant-like organisms that consist of one fungus species and at least one alga or cyanobacteria living in a symbiotic #relationship, which means they are beneficial to each other. Orange lichen is especially interesting and very special. They are in the family Teloschistaceae. The pigment orange is actually toxic, and this family of lichen has adapted. Right next to the gene that creates the toxic pigment is a gene that transports the pigment out of its cells, where it crystalizes and reflects UV rays off of the plant--it's sunscreen! Antarctica has very high, powerful levels of UV, so protecting oneself is critical. The gene used to transport the toxic pigment isn't found in other lichen. The pigment produced by lichen are known as ‘anthraquinones,' and as the lichen produces them, they crystalize on the surface of the plant. The algae portion of lichen needs sunlight to photosynthesize and produce sugar for the system, but too much is fatal, hence the need for sunscreen. I didn't have a macro lens with me during this landing, so you might have to view this full screen to see the detail. I won't make that mistake again on my next trip to Antarctica! While we tend to think of the 7th continent as a desert devoid of plant life, it's actually rich in fungi, alga, and lichen, and on some islands, moss and two types of vascular plants--a grass and a pearlwort. 29 февраля 2024 года. Последний день арктического лета. На рассвете отшвартовались и вышли в сторону о.Кувервилль. Погода довольна свежая. Первая половина дня прошла по уже привычному судовому расписанию. К обеду немного разведрило и мы выставили первые китовые вахты. Это когда по очереди мы стоим под пронизывающим ветром, пытаясь разглядеть в бескрайней синеве океана меж айсбергов и волн фонтан или какую-нибудь часть туловища кита. Задача весьма непростая скажу я вам. "Ки-и-и-т" - раздалось сверху. И в этот момент все, кто сидел, лежал, принимал душ, спал, ломанулись на палубу. Конечно забыв обо всех мерах безопасности и спас жилетах. Быстро получив люлей от Капитана, все ринулись в обратную сторону за жилетами, потом опять на палубу. Кит был около километра от лодки и, видимо, не очень нам рад. Попытка "достать" его дроном не увенчалась успехом. Он скрывался бескрайних глубинах, а через несколько минут показывался уже в другом направлении. Видимо, у китов тоже бывают плохие дни... Высадив батарейку я бросил эту затею и стал просто наблюдать. Минут через 30 все намерзлись и спустились в кают-компанию. Ещё через час, Капитан, наученный горьким опытом, аккуратно спустился с мостика, преградив нам путь наверх и в пол голоса произнес: "Если интересно, там все ещё киты". И это был подарок... 3 больших особи шли параллельным курсом около 40 минут. Пару раз приближаясь вплотную к борту. В этот момент я впервые услышал дыхание этого млекопитающего. На несколько секунд я забыл о фото и видео съемке и зачарованно смотрел на огромную спину, уходящую под воду казалось целую вечность в каких-то метрах от меня. К сожалению, не удалось понаблюдать их пузырьковую охоту... Остаток дня прошел в обсуждении увиденного. К вечеру добрались до о.Кувервилль и провели зодиак тур среди айсбергов к большой колонии пингвинов. Тут есть особенность. Чуять ты их начинаешь задолго до того как увидишь)) Среди льдин показались уже знакомые мачты "Europa"... Отличный день! Mi chiamo Denis! Il mio passato è oscuro… ricordo il freddo in mezzo al bosco, da solo, una fame tremenda!😟 Mangiavo tutto quello che trovavo…mi avevano lasciato lì, abbandonato in quel bosco😣 Poi qualcuno mi ha preso, mi ha caricato sul furgoncino e mi hanno portato in questo posto dove c'erano tanti cani che abbaiavano, tutti diversi. Eravamo dentro delle grandi scatole con delle sbarre, delle persone tanto carine ci davano da mangiare e ci facevano un po' di coccole anche se ne avrei volute molte di più😪 Poi un giorno venne una signora che pensava io fossi molto bello, perché io sono bello, io sono molto bello con quest'aria un po' triste, un po' pensierosa😌 Questa signora mi portò a casa, ma non mi trattava bene, era un po' antipatica, lo capivo che non le piacevo infatti mi riportò indietro😤 Così sono ritornato in quella scatola con le sbarre. Ero triste, tristissimo perché non volevo altro che stare in una casa calda, con un divano, coperte morbide e della pappa tutta per me.😞 Poi sono arrivate Giorgia e Patrizia che mi hanno portato a casa. All’inizio ne ho combinate di tutti i colori perché dovevo metterle alla prova, capire che se mi volevano davvero e accettarmi per come sono! Perché io sembro tonto, ma sono molto molto molto intelligente e un ottimo osservatore🧐 Ma loro non si sono arrese e hanno lottato con tutte le loro forze per farmi capire quanto bene potessero darmi 💪🥰 Adesso vivo con questa famiglia che mi vuole bene come se fossi un secondo figlio molto molto peloso! Viviamo tante belle avventure insieme in montagna, tante passeggiate e tanti amici cani.
