We’re in the Month of February Now, and the First Day was National Serpent Day once more, and on the Last Minute, I figured I draw a Double-Headed Serpent in my Style for the Heck of it, and I should be Okay with the final Results here. Info on the Double-Headed Serpent: The Double-headed serpent is an Aztec sculpture. It is a snake with two heads composed of mostly turquoise pieces applied to a wooden base. It came from Aztec Mexico and might have been worn or displayed in religious ceremonies. The mosaic is made of pieces of turquoise, spiny oyster shell and conch shell. The sculpture is at the British Museum. Ancient Aztecs have also termed this creature as ‘Mansee’ which translates as ‘The Voice of Heart’. The sculpture is of an undulating serpent with heads on each side. A single block of cedar wood (Cedrela odorata) forms the sculpture’s base. The back side has been hollowed out, possibly to make the sculpture lighter. The back, once gilded, is now plain, and only the heads have decorations on both sides. The outer body of the two-headed snake is covered in a mosaic of turquoise, accented by red spiny oyster. Turquoise stones were broken in small, flat tesserae and adhered to the wooden body with pine resin. By using 2,000 small pieces, the flat pieces of stone give the impression of a faceted, curvilinear surface. The turquoise was cut and ground using stone tools. Some of the turquoise was imported to Mesoamerica from approximately 1,600 km to the northwest, from the Four Corners Region of Oasisamerica where the Ancestral Pueblo people mined the stone. #nationalserpentday #serpent #doubleheadedserpent #mexicanarchitect #mexico🇲🇽

I have been made aware that today is #NationalSerpentDay, and as luck would have it, I encountered my first snake of the year earlier this week. Indeed, it was a black racer adjacent to my plot center while checking a tree planting the other day. Being only 45°F, it was sluggish and took a rare defensive posture; they normally live up to their name and speed away from me in no time. Everything it did happened in slow motion. Its attempt to mimic a rattlesnake by rattling its tail in the litter was more like a dog wagging its tail. Its attempts to strike at me was like someone in a drunken stupor trying to stand up and land punches. Regardless, I carried it a couple hundred feet into the woods to make sure it wasn't found by someone less loving of them than I. In return, I received my first bite (on the glove) and musking, which smelled like fish. I would not have had it any other way. The start of February was a Celtic festival called Imbolc where there was an old custom of watching to see if serpents, hedgehogs or badgers came out from their winter dens to indicate if the end of winter was approaching. Happy National Serpent Day! This here is my lifer rough green snake (Opheodrys aestivus) I saw in September 2021. I had been looking for this species for a couple months and supposedly they were common at the nature preserve I visited, but somehow they kept eluding me. When I was walking down a muddy trail on a drizzly fall day with my dad, I spotted an odd-looking blade of grass that turned out to be my first ever rough green snake (picture 2)! This specific encounter was a herping milestone for me. As a brand new herper at the time, I had seen a couple of snakes before but had never touched one. Knowing that rough green snakes are extremely docile and reluctant to bite, I confidently put my finger up to it (picture 1) and eventually picked it up with a branch. Remembering about this snake really brings me back to my early herping days during the pandemic. Apparently today is #nationalserpentday ? It's an excuse to post some Crushinator content I suppose. Snakes are such wonderful creatures. Eryx colubrinus, often called the Kenyan sand boa can actually be found over much of North Eastern Africa, from Egypt to Tanzania. Reportedly even a few have been found across the red sea in Yemen! While most boas are thought of as Central and South american snakes, with a few groups being island dwellers, the genus Eryx consists of 13 species (at time of posting) has members in Europe, Africa, the Arabian peninsula, and parts of Asia. KSBs make great pets due to their small size and pretty laidback attitudes, but might not be for everyone as they are fossorial and nocturnal meaning they spend a lot of their days digging and sleeping in the substrate while only occasionally coming out to explore at night. For #nationalserpentday I have this gorgeous Siphlophis compressus, also known as a red vine snake. This is a nocturnal and aboreal species of snake that spends most it’s time hunting for mainly lizards, although they also may eat snakes, small mammals, and eggs. This snake was found on the ground in some leaf litter, most likely going from one tree to another. These snakes are not highly studied and so we don’t know much more about them then that. This individual was found at Mandari Panga in the Ecuadorian Amazon. Found by @colby_moore222

New York State is home to 17 species of snakes. Here in Buttonhook Forest you might encounter the shy Garter Snake, Milk Snake and down by our wetlands the Northern Water Snake. Its National Serpent Day! Introducing the Puff Adder (Bitis arietans), or as we call them Puffies. Do not be fooled by its relaxed and lazy demeaner, this snake can strike in the same time it takes a human to blink. Puff adders are solitary and nocturnal creatures, spending most of their time basking on the ground. They are excellent swimmers and are known to be good climbers, especially if the ground is too wet and cold. One does not only have to keep an eye out for the majestic trophies one is stalking. But also to take care not to step on one of these highly venomous snakes.
