When her oldest would survive three suicide attempts. When her youngest would make the brave decision to live their truth and identify as transgender, then have top surgery. When she would have to facilitate the medical care and end of life process for her Mother-in-law. Her mother. Her grandmother. How the HELL could she have even begun to think about HERSELF? Let's talk about a little different #transformationtuesday . The kind that sometimes happens when you finally take charge of your health. What happens is that you then uncover other health issues that need attention, and have the bandwidth to address them. It's not always a straight line up; it's peaks and valleys like life often is. Last week, I was suddenly and abruptly forced to stop working out due to some lightheadedness and low blood pressure that may be related to a cardiac issue I've been dealing with. I'd love to sit here and give you the "rose-colored glasses" version of what happened next. But that wouldn't be real. I had a full-blown pity party, sponsored by Bad Decisions. It lasted two days. Then, I took a deep breath and remembered everything I've learned on this journey: how to pivot. How to sit with my feelings. How to cope without turning to food. I remembered everything that my dear friend @bariatric.therapist taught me. I reflected on the encouraging words my other dear friend @bari.godmother posts in the baribubble daily. I reached out to my coach @myweightishistory to help ground and center me. I received love, prayers, and accountability from my gorgeous friend @netta_booskie. This #transformationtuesday post is going to be a long one. Stay with me here. On the left is the first serious progress pictures I took a year ago. I was already seven months into my VSG journey and had just hit a 100 pound loss from my highest weight. I was flirting with the elusive onderland that so many people chase. And honestly? I thought that was it. I was satisfied with my progress. Sure, I'd had a goal weight that I'd hoped to get to but if I didn't? I'd be OK just hanging around onederland. I felt better, I moved better. I ate better. I had my little 15lb dumbbells and my YouTube workouts. All good. Then, on March 12, 2023, I had my discovery call with @myweightishistory and joined @busybariatrics. And the game changed completely. I learned macros and a love of whole, real, body-nourishing foods I learned to move efficiently and lift heavy and love and incorporate movement into my life as naturally as brushing my teeth I learned focus and determination and that when there's an injury or a setback (and trust me there have been several this year) you pivot and focus on what you can control instead of giving up completely. Now, a year into my life in the BusyFam, I am at my original goal weight (with new goals in sight) Funny thing is, hitting goal wasn't the thrill I thought it would be because I've gained so much more than the weight I've lost. Insurance approved my panniculectomy. The surgeon said he cut off 2 pounds of just straight skin 0 fat. I haven't seen this weight since probably 7th grade. When I started this journey I never thought I'd even consider skin removal. But I'm so glad I considered it and looked into it. I'm recovering well and looking forward to getting back in the gym for the first time since December. I'm looking forward to seeing what I'm going to look like fully healed up. I'm in great spirits and looking forward to what the future holds. I have very little pain but am dealing with bad orthostatic hypotension. So today is another #faceITFriday While WLS often helps to alleviate or resolve medical issues, sometimes it brings up medical issues that need attention. I've had an abnormally low heart rate for years and my cardiologist has finally decided it's something he needs to monitor and figure out what to do about, especially since now I exercise regularly and my heart rate doesn't go up very much. So I have an external heart monitor for the next 30 days, then may need to have one implanted. He thinks I may need a pacemaker at some point. None of this is a reason to not continue to do everything I can to make my journey the most successful one possible. As a matter of fact, it's all the more reason to. A little different spin on #transformationtuesday This picture can be seen in the background of many of the pictures I post. My late grandmother made the dresses for the kids and me; with my size and their age difference (almost 7 years) we couldn't have ever bought matching outfits. That was around the year 2000. I found the dress the other day when I was cleaning out my guest room. I won't ever get rid of it for sentimental reasons. My grandmother passed away 4 years ago at the age of 100. She was always the toughest on me about my weight. I've decided that my word for 2024 is "commit". It took me until yesterday to decide this. Does that mean I failed the year? No, not at all. As a matter of fact, I was committing before I decided I would commit. How? By cleaning up my home office and creating a corner for my personal endeavors. I also promised myself that I would show up to more @bari.nation support groups and I did. Commitment is wanting an outcome and making a concrete plan with doable steps to get there. I didn't go to the gym yesterday. I was supposed to. It was one of my lift days. But I woke up with the beginning of a migraine. So I called in sick to work and it became a rest day. A lifetime ago I would have berated myself for not being productive, for "letting myself go" and focused on what I wasn't able to do which would have turned into emotional eating, which would have spiraled into....well, you all know that tale. Now, I know that rest days, even unplanned ones, are good for me. That I can't always control everything my body wants to do. That I can focus on the things I can do. And that as soon as I'm able to, I can get right back to my routine. I was nursing that migraine hangover this morning so I wasn't quite up to heading to the gym for a make-up day but I have my trusty home gym so I did what I could here. There's always more than one route to a destination. A setback is not a full stop. It's not a U-turn. Rest when you need to. Slow down the pace if you have to. I took down my Christmas tree yesterday. Why does that matter? It had become part of my morning routine to turn it on and sit in its light to drink my coffee and listen to podcasts to start my day. I knew I was going to miss that. So I found some fairy lights and strung them through the branches of my decor. Why does that matter? So I was alittle hesitant on posting this. I've been on a downward spiral lately. Feeling down, feeling like a nobody, feeling like why am I actually doing this. I've been told I'm over doing it, I'm in my own world, I look off. But it has not stopped me. Maybe every once in awhile the thought creeps in my head, just stop, just give up no one cares. In April of 2022 I was walking the Boardwalk in Atlantic City with my husband when he asked if I had ever thought about having "that surgery " that our daughter had recently had (VSG). I said I had thought about it here and there over the years and left it at that. A few minutes later, I caught a glimpse of myself in the reflection of this door and was horrified. I went home from that trip and booked my first appointment with my bariatric surgeon. That reflection was the straw that broke the camel's back. I found that door. I'm no longer horrified. No more shame or self-doubt. Now I can look and see hard work, self-confidence and someone who is prepared to keep working hard, investing in herself, and prioritizing her mental and physical health and happiness. 37 months between these photos. 265 pounds lost in those 37 months. Currently sitting in onederland. If you would've asked me 37 months ago, I'd have laughed my ass off. I would've been more than ecstatic to be at 275 or even 300. 37 months of dedication, discipline and hard work. It has all paid off and then some. The past couple weeks have been tough dealing with reactive hypoglycemia. Last week especially I couldn't keep my blood sugar up no matter what I did. This week I increased my fat and cut out all simple carbs and I've been stable. I also had to cut out Bananas because those were giving me issues as well. I feel great this week. I did have another setback on Wednesday. I broke my pinky but I'm not going to let it get me down. I'm going to stay the course and stay on plan. I'll be back in the gym before I know it and will come back stronger and better than ever. This is the best I've ever felt and look forward to the future. 2024 is my year. I'm not going to let anyone or anything get in my way. I'm going to keep crushing my goals and keep working towards the best version of myself. The first weekend of my #christmasvacation...jam packed with a mix of healthy routine and fun holiday stuff. As with most of my days off, I soak in the moments and remember that I should post afterwards lol. This #transformationtuesday isn't about side by side pictures. Or pants sizes. It's about a far more important transformation. Mindset. It's also me giving flowers to a person who never wants to take them but deserves a whole f'n garden full of them. Exactly nine months ago today, I sat down for a discovery call with @myweightishistory to possibly start working with him in @busybariatrics. During that call, he asked about my exercise routine thus far. I mentioned that I owned dumbbells up to 12lbs and would probably never need heavier ones than those because that was all I could lift. He smirked his little smirk, said ok, and we continued the conversation. Over the past nine months, Rob has pushed, motivated, pivoted, taught, cheered, corrected and encouraged me to believe that I am worthy, capable, and deserve to thrive in this new era of my life. And this morning, the girl who swore she'd never need more than 12lb dumbbells deadlifted 115lbs. And that's the transformation. Thanks, Coach. Buy some vases because I'll never stop giving you your flowers! 6 weeks. 6 weeks difference in that first picture. 6 weeks of discipline and consistency. 6 weeks of getting my ass up at 0300 to be at the gym for 0400. 6 weeks of hard work, eating clean, and taking my vitamins and supplements. 6 weeks of huge gains. I've also recently just switched gyms to more of a lifting gym! I also hit #onederland a week and a half ago. Now it's time to bulk up and get stronger! These past 6 weeks have been some of the roughest and toughest times both mentally and psychically. I pushed through and stayed the course, found my discipline, and worked on being consistent. We meal prepped every week and consistently track. I got rid of my bad habits. I've been alcohol free for 50 days today. I wasn't a drinker before surgery but found myself drinking a handle a week for the last 8 months or so. I decided enough was enough and quit. I'm also 48 days nicotine free, and honestly, that's been easy compared to the booze. I'm also in week 5 of therapy with an eating disorder therapist. We're working through some of my food issues, and it's helped. The gym has also been a huge mental health boost. I just had my first session with my trainer this morning. This is going to help me achieve even bigger gains. I can't wait to see where the next 6 weeks leads me. I actually look forward to getting up and going to the gym first thing in the morning. It's an amazing way to start my day. Discipline and consistency has definitely been the key to my success so far. Don't rely on motivation because it won't always be there. Now LETS FUCKING GOOOOO.
Last night was another of my Christmas traditions; visiting LaSalette Shrine and their awe-inspiring 300,000 light display over their 10 acre campus. It's a place that I've visited since I was a kid with my family. Yes, it was freezing, but it always fills my spiritual cup. Was asked by the bariatric surgery support group at the hospital where I had my surgery to be on the patient panel to answer questions for pre-op and newly post-op patients this afternoon. I spoke of the super supportive community here on Instagram, the informative podcasts available, and the additional avenues of support. Finding this community so early in the process changed the whole trajectory of my journey and I will happily share that with anyone who asks (or doesn't for that matter lol). I've been running some errands today and have been doing alot of thinking. So I normally don't jump on the scale at night. But I got out of the shower and thought what the heck. I'm 2 pounds away from my 2nd goal. So my highest weight was 256 April 2023. I walked into my Dr office crying, miserable having heart problems and was told if u dnt make a change u will have a heart attack or a stroke. I made the decision that day no more. I had surgery August 2023 weighing in at 232. My surgeon said my weight should be 150. No way. My goal is 185 and tonight weighing in at 187. Surgery is not the easy way out it is a tool that has helped me but I continue to work at it. I love my support system. The ladies in my life are amazing. Let's talk about a different kind of #transformationtuesday. The holidays. More specifically, the preparation and celebrations leading up to them. Christmas is my favorite time of the year. However, it simultaneously causes me deep depression and feelings of complete inadequacy. My husband and kids all dislike Christmas so I decorate and prepare for the holidays alone. I do Christmasy things with my friends and other family. I never feel like I've done enough-enough cleaning, enough shopping, enough gratitude. Even in those times when I'm surrounded by people, I feel completely alone. How have I dealt with this over the years? I'm sure you know the answer. It was more than just Brigham's Frozen Pudding (my favorite ice cream ever). But I could crush a couple of those a week easily. Now? I sit with my feelings and process them. I journal. I exercise. I plan my food. All those things are part of my everyday life and I will work my holidays around those, not the other way around. Read that again. It's important. Christmas will look different this year. Better I think.
