The mental road has been the longest and continues to require regular maintenance. Honestly; it has felt like the longest 6 weeks of my life. But it feels SO good to be back in the gym! I’m having to start out very light. I also didn’t really follow a routine today, because my overall goal was just feeling my body and achieving some stretching and movement without overdoing it. And that felt GREAT! 😌 I have to remind myself, slow and steady to start. Because I’m just ready to get straight back into it, but my body isn’t all that ready yet. Still lots of healing to go; but feeling fantastic overall as far as recovery and getting myself back into more physical activity. - •Update: I can swim as long as I don’t have any openings around my incisions. •Compression needs to be worn for at least 3 months minimum to achieve the best results. I don’t HAVE to wear it “24/7” but if I’m doing a lot of activity, or anything strenuous I need to wear it to help minimize swelling. I also need to still sleep in it (ughhh 😫 that part I hate the most). It has been over 3 months since my skin removal surgery and the scars are feeling really good. I still have to go to wound care once a week, but there is only one spot left and it is so close to be fully healed. I am still going to lymphatic massage every two weeks, but will drop down to once a month as I return to work on May 13th. I have been keeping the scars moisturized with regular moisturizer and bio oil. It seems to be doing the trick. I am also massaging the scars myself. I am also still wearing my compression 12 hours a day, but I have gotten to the point where I do not mind wearing it at all. So much has changed with my body, but I still have good days and bad days with it, as do we all. Sometimes I feel like a champion and other days I feel like my body looks the same as my former 386 pounds. I try and give myself kindness and grace and take those days as they come. That is the update. Our patient has lost over 110 pounds of weight. I am so pleased with the results. Today was my first shower and the first time taking off my arm binders. As I stood in front of the mirror again, I was overwhelmed. Dr Avery has done a great job. I did t realise how long the arm scars actually were, they are pretty long. A bit of swelling on arms and stomach and on my hip but I feel good. Ice packs are my friend. I have a lot of new followers for anyone that doesn’t know me, my name is Natalie Lyall. I have two amazing boys, ages 7 and 9. I have the most amazing husband, @garrett.lyall. He has and continues to support me through the ups and downs that this journey has taken me on. I had gastric bypass on March 5, 2022 at Toronto Western Hospital after struggling with my weight my entire life and eventually leading to nearly being completely bed ridden due to a 12mm disc extrusion at the L4/L5 with spinal stenosis. I realized at that time I had hit rock bottom and needed to make major changes. Bariatric surgery was the key for me. I have lost 230 pounds and had skin removal surgery on January 16, 2024. For now, I’ve chosen to rock with it 🤷🏼♀️ I’m very blessed that I don’t really have a massive “apron” or overhang in consideration with the 260lbs that I’ve lost, so that has played a significant role in my decision to be at peace with my loose skin. At least for now. ❤️ In the weight loss community, skin removal is a hot topic. I’ve noticed it’s almost expected that once you hit maintenance, the next phase of the journey should be #skinremovalsurgery 🤯 But, for some of us, that’s either not an option or we’ve just chosen that the cons to more surgery outweigh the pros. I don’t think there’s a right or wrong, I think it’s a very personal and individual choice. Do I love my loose skin? Nope. I am home and recovering ❤️🩹 from round 1 my leg and round 2 arm surgery. They sucked, pulled, chopped my excess skin and sewed 🧵 me up. Took out the infected, old dead skin out. My leg incisions go from highest point in my groin to me knee and arm from elbow to in armpit. I am tough cookie have a high pain tolerance but this is super painful especially now that freezing out. I do have to rely on my amazing hubby to move or do anything. I am so grateful to have had my life saving and life changing surgery! My arms won’t hurt so much when doing hair, no more infections or hospital visits all the time once I heal. So grateful for my amazing surgeon and his team. I struggle with body dysmorphia and started working with a therapist to address it. She suggested yoga to practice mindfulness. I had a better idea, I went for my first “real” run in 8 weeks. It was great being outside again, and although my HR and breathing were a bit much I managed to avoid walking. Running with a binder around your torso is also tricky, but not impossible. I can’t wait to build the endurance back up so this feels easier again. Running even when it’s hard, gives me something to love about my body. This is the sort of day I plan on having today. It is rainy here in Southern Ontario and my mood is feeling the same as the weather. I am feeling absolutely exhausted. I donated blood for the first time on Monday and I am not sure if that was a great idea. My hemoglobin was 127 the cutoff was 125 for women, so I was eligible but I have low iron on a good day. My bariatric dietician told me that as a bariatric patient that struggles with her iron it might not be a good idea going forward especially if I want another plastic surgery. It is really hard for me to build my reserves back up. So the exhaustion is killing me. Today I rest. I got some movement in but that will be about it. Listen to your body and know when to take it easy. I used to step on the scale every single day BUT now I do it only a couple times a month when I check in with my fitness coach. Why?! 👀 🫢 I would let my weight determine my mood for the rest of my day. 🤭 The number on the scale would determine what I ate and did for the day rather than consistent, healthy, pre determined habits. 🤭 I would obsess over the number in my mind throughout the entire day. 🤭 I chose to base my “progress” off of the scale rather than listening to my body and developing a healthy mind / body connection. 🤭 I looked at the number on the scale as a measure of how much fat I was gaining but in all actuality it could have been muscle. 1 week to go! Sharing a small corner of my work/home office space this morning! I share this space with many Star Wars characters as well as cuddly soft toys, a whale wall mural and loads of books! It’s basically our spare bedroom, but with my workload increase (still only technically 3 days per week) it makes sense for me to get off of the dining room table and into my own space. I have 2 full days of work left and then will focus on prepping for my week long hospital stay and much food prep etc for when I come home. My recovery will be anywhere from 3 to 6 weeks.. but can expect to take it relatively easy exercise wise for 12 weeks. I am so blessed my work and manager are happy to be fluid during this time with me.. expecting me to be off work for maybe 6 weeks with zero pressure for me to commit to a time frame. I’m excited, nervous, terrified.. I’ve broken out in a rash on my face and struggling a bit to sleep. This surgery is something I have wanted for a very long time, but have been too afraid to do it..
