I spent yesterday looking at photos of my works summer barbecue party, to get a feel for what I should wear this year as I’ll need to buy something now all my clothes are too big. As I looked through the photos, I was horrified when I found the ones with me in. I went realise at the time just how puffy and swolllen I looked. Progress update and revealing something I’ve always been careful to hide. Today was photos, measurements day etc. Photo on the left was taken 2 weeks before my surgery (November 2019) and photo on right was taken today. Even tho I have had a small regain (which I am working on) it’s quite clear how much the surgery 4.5 years later benefited me. What have I hidden for years ? My legs. I am 120% convinced I have either stage 2 or 3 of lipoedema. I haven’t been diagnosed because even if I have it the only fix (which is not always permanent) is surgery and I am not going down this path but I wanted the pics so I can see clearly if I can improve them 😀 I am focusing on building muscle and fat loss currently as well as getting back to running 🏃♀️ so fingers crossed we see some improvement over the next 12 months 💪🏻

Ham & bocconcini frittata. 1/3 cup grated mozzarella 1/2 zucchini sliced 1/2 zucchini grated (salt & leave for 10 minutes and squeeze out moisture) 1/2 red onion finely diced 1//2 red capsicum finely diced 10 cherry tomatoes halved 1 spring onion finely sliced 1 packet of ham finely sliced 4 large eggs Salt & pepper 9 cherry bocconcini Place crumpled up damp baking paper on tray Sprinkle with mozzarella Layer with sliced zucchini Mix all ingredients except for bocconcini in bowl & pour over sliced zucchini. I had my one year post op appointment today at 14 months. My surgeon’s office could not stop saying how great I was doing. It’s still a lot to take in. Here are some of the things we discussed. Diet: I was told to keep doing what I’m doing. I strive for a minimum of 100 grams of protein per day and a minimum of 64 ounces of water. I do not worry about any other macros/micros. Movement: They were very impressed with my dedication to incorporating movement. The only concern I shared was that when I was trying to run a couple times a week my weight loss stalled dramatically. We set up an appointment with the surgeon’s dietitian (who is also an athlete), to discuss changes I could make if I wanted to incorporate more cardio in my routine. Goal Weight: They asked if I was wanting to continue to lose, or if I was happy where I was. My surgeon set a realistic goal weight for me of 220-229 pounds, which I’ve obviously surpassed. This would have been a loss of 75% of my excess weight from the date of surgery, and I’ve already lost 85%. They told me at this point they are completely happy with my weight loss and they would support me in starting to try to maintain this current weight but are also happy to support me to continue losing. After some discussion, we decided that I will keep doing what I’m doing and if I get concerned I’m losing too much that I can reach out to talk about maintenance. They told me that they would start to push me towards maintenance if I got to around 175 pounds, but believe I could start maintenance anytime. Plastic Surgery / Skin Removal: At my request, we discussed this next possible step in my journey. They recommend to wait until at least 18 months post op before having any skin removal surgery, so they support me at 14 months post op to start the research process and to start setting up consultations to get an idea of what surgeries I may want to have and what the costs may be. Sadly, I do not believe any of these surgeries will be covered by insurance. I’m not really sure we can afford this next step, but I am going to start the research and get all the information before I assume I cannot. First year down. Many to go! #wls

She didn't know. She didn't know how all-consuming motherhood would be. She didn't know how she would muster the energy to work two jobs, raise two kids, be a good wife, daughter, daughter-in-law, granddaughter, friend... She didn't know where she would pull the intestinal fortitude from as first her husband, then her youngest, would each endure two brain surgeries. When her oldest would survive three suicide attempts. When her youngest would make the brave decision to live their truth and identify as transgender, then have top surgery. When she would have to facilitate the medical care and end of life process for her Mother-in-law. Her mother. Her grandmother. How the HELL could she have even begun to think about HERSELF? She didn't know she could have. That taking care of her nutrition, mindset, and making time for movement would have helped, not hindered. That these things can be a part of a full life, not something else to try to shoehorn in. That making time for herself would have added to, not taken away from, her kids' lives. Two years ago I decided I was going to go back to school, but I also knew that I wanted to leave healthcare. So I embarked on my completely different major, an area I was always passionate about but counted myself out of. Fast forward to the ball, and aside from running round like a headless chicken whilst Lin & Ade were cool as cucumbers, I couldn't help but spare a moment to take in just how far we've come as a charity...and I couldn't be more proud of Lizze & the rest of the girls!!!! And I can't even begin to describe how proud I felt looking around the rooms and seeing 'my' work on every screen...the TV screensavers, the 360 photo backgrounds, the videos, etc... Even now, it makes me well up! 🥹 Before this, I'd spent the past 4 years recovering from numerous operations and slipping further and further into depression & isolation. Pre-WLS Consideration # 1: Accept that obesity is a disease and remove the shame you may feel. These posts will include things I did prior to ever considering WLS that I believe has greatly impacted my journey/success, and highly suggest you consider, starting with acceptance and shame. You did not do anything wrong. There should be no shame in being obese. For instance, no one would tell someone with diabetes that they should feel shame for using insulin. So, if you’re obese and WLS seems to be the best bet to tackle the disease, you should work to let go of the shame. What is shame? I like Dr. Brene Brown’s definition of shame the most. She defines shame as “the intensely painful feeling or experience of believing that we are flawed and therefore unworthy of love and belonging—something we’ve experienced, done, or failed to do makes us unworthy of connection.” How did I work to remove shame? For me, it was through therapy, making peace with food, and constant work on untangling diet mentality. More on those in coming posts. For you, it might be a different method. I’ve seen so many people both non-WLS and WLS people, especially on Instagram, who carry around so much shame in living in a larger body. Shame does not serve us and the more we can do to remove it, the better we will be in the long-run. Whether you lose or gain one more pound, does not make you any more or less worthy of love and connection. Work to accept and love yourself today, with no promises of changes to your body. You’re worthy today. Period. This is where I started. About 6-7 years ago, I started to do the work to accept obesity is a disease and work daily to remove any shame. And yes, I mean I continue to work daily to ensure I’m not putting shame on myself so that I can continue to move along this journey in an emotionally, healthy, meaningful way. #wls #wlscommunity #wlsjourney #obesity #shame

Chocolate berry oat & chia protein pots. 2 tablespoons protein oats 1 tablespoon chia seeds 1 tablespoon protein powder 1 tablespoon PB & cocoa powder. 1/4 cup almond milk Frozen mixed berries Large tub coconut vanilla yoghurt 4 squares of dark chocolate. Add dry ingredients to jar and add lid & shake until mixed. Add almond milk & stir with fork to mix. Place in fridge overnight. The next day - Add frozen berries and 3 heaped tablespoons of coconut yoghurt to jar. Mix remaining yoghurt with a couple of tablespoons of crushed frozen berries and add to jar.
