“I’ll never paint dogs!” That’s what I said to my sister over a decade ago. It’s true I’m not a fan of painting pet portraits, but today I’m painting my own dog. This won’t just be a colorful painting of my livestock guardian dog (LGD). It will be a work featuring her sleeping with our farm animals. Our LGD is a Great Pyrenees and she lives full-time outside at @laechelinfarms . She prefers the outdoors and instinctively protects. She protects my family, our livestock and our property. She is a gentle giant, but is also very wolf like. She can strike a predator or another dog without warning, yet she can be found sleeping with piglets and goat kids a few minutes later. This work will be dedicated to the working farm dogs that protect our farms to ensure we all have food on tables across the 🌍. As my artist journey continues, I’ve learned to not say, “never” to a certain subject matter. As inspiration changes as an artist’s life evolves. I am interested in knowing which of my followers have or had a Great Pyrenees or Anatolian working dog? I did a study on fur using acrylics on a wooden panel, practicing using the light and shadows to give a more realistic and 3D effect to the fur. I enjoyed painting in acrylics and using colour washes over existing brush strokes to give an altered colour or tone...it saved me SO MUCH time compared to using gouache! I am already having trouble remembering that I was painting on cookies with icing until last September. Now I have finally come back to creating art that doesn’t get eaten! Japanese Serow - Lapin Brown from @rockwell_canada, Chinese white from @danielsmithartistsmaterials and Micron archival ink on cheap drawing paper- This piece was about finding out how to paint fur in a natural way. Dapping a dry Chinese/ Japanese brush in rather thick watercolor seems to be an excellent way! According to my son who I video called this morning, everyone who sees this creature of Nature - the Japanese Serow - has at least 3 days a lot of luck! He saw one ( video nr 6) and I figured if I would paint one....I could share his luck...:))) Its a quick practising drawing - try out my new washi tape from the HEMA- enjoying Lapis brown and especially find out if this dry technique works to create fur. It certainly does, so I am I guess a lucky person today.
