3:18:32 โจ๐ Fuelling was on point but my quads and hip flexors were so unbearably cramped from 7 miles, I was fighting so hard to keep going from 10Km, which is never ideal in a marathon! Huge love to everyone who shouted my name, and to the BA Boeing-777 that flew directly over my head at 25Km - I was so close to a DNF when that happened. So proud of how hard I fought to finish, and I didnโt walk! Keeping the perspective - still a brilliant time, and it takes next level resilience to keep moving in a marathon with that level of cramp! A moment for the very best race crew I could possible have asked for! ๐๐ป๐๐ผโโ๏ธ๐๐ป Coach Nat @runsnatasha (& her megaphone, which youโll all be pleased to know I have now confiscated ahead of London) wrote my plan, dragged me to several training races, taught me about fuel, kit, carb loading, and everything I need to know about running (including the pre-race faff), took me on several compulsory training runs & believed I could do it even when I really didnโt think I could ๐๐ผโโ๏ธ And my future husband @irichardjarvis has supported me through sixteen weeks, on a constant cycle of โrace, recover, fly, land home, prepare for next race, raceโ - heโs driven me to every race, made every tuna pasta bake on a Saturday night, & roast dinner on a Sunday, massaged my sore muscles, run salt baths, washed the kit, attempted to calm me down in several pre-race portaloo queues, been the one out, even in the pouring rain, to cheer me on, written a race day spreadsheet (complete with every single service station on the motorway), and dealt with Nat & her megaphone for four hours, for which anyone deserves a medal ๐ซข I cannot explain what it felt like to run through that wall of sound in Manchester City centre yesterday (a huge huge thank you to all of the supporters, Iโve never known anything like it), and knowing that when it really starts to hurt, I just had to run to Nat & Rich, just made it so much easier! ๐๐ผโโ๏ธ I CANNOT WAIT to a) do it all again next Sunday for Nat at the LONDON MARATHON! Flying adds a whole new complication to marathon training - your legs just donโt recover if you stay up all night working at 40,000 feet, running in 40 degrees when not heat adapted is a 1/10 and nutrition can go a bit AWOL without routine - but itโs also been the most wonderful way to see cities Iโve been to before, and cities that are totally new to me ๐ Looking forward to a summer of asking scheduling for something other than โevery weekend off to run 20 milesโ (๐): Iโd love to go to Tokyo and Rio, and I might even put a bid in for the Maldives (potentially the only crew member to swap off it because โyou canโt run anywhere thereโ!) Twin Lakes โ๏ธ๐๐ผโโ๏ธ๐๐ป Final 20 miler and with that, my very first block of marathon training is officially complete, we did it! โจ All that we have to do now is the taper & the victory lap!๐ฅ A few last minute lessons from today: 1. The aim of today was to not โleave the marathon in the twenty milerโ so pulled the pace back - so hopefully I should recover quickly into next week ๐ช๐ป 2. My hair clips are catching on my plaits - sort of a petty issue, but one that I have no doubt would upset me 40km in ๐ฅฒ so I need a new hairstyle 3. Gels every 5km absolutely adds to my energy levels & I need to have them (even if I donโt want them) 4. The pre-race fuelling & kit is perfect, so changing absolutely nothing & 5. That I now have absolutely no doubt, with my race crew @irichardjarvis & @runsnatasha all the support of the @leightonfunrunners & all of my IG running friends, that I can get over this finish line! #victoriadockparkrun completed at @victoriadockside Softness of bread: unavailable Tastiness of chorizo: 5 Tastiness of tator tot: 5 Availability of mayo: unavailable Cost: 3 Overall: 2.6 out of 5 The journey to this weekโs parkbun lasted over an hour and saw our contributor face one of their greatest fears: cable cars. There was a delightfully friendly, sunny and well priced Italian cafe opposite the finish line so we collected some cable car cannoli and used our barcodes to get a free ride. We then got โthe Uber boatโ to Tower Bridge and walked a fair distance to our destination. Upon arrival, the cocktails came quickly and our spice tolerance was catered for. The tator tots were a fine substitute for hash browns but chorizo in place of a Lincolnshire sausage will have to do. Another half marathon โ๏ธ and we are NEARLY THERE with my very first marathon training block! ๐๐ผโโ๏ธ I am getting so excited now (but also terrified, nervous & dreading the taper if Iโm honest!)
