This is the last miniature of the set. If you haven't seen the viral video of this woman calling the police because a little black girl was selling water in their shared neighborhood, it is interesting for a few reasons: The clip is only 15 seconds, but in that time you see the woman duck behind a garden wall when she realizes she's being filmed. That action appears instinctual, and suggests she knows on some level that calling the police on an 8 year old girl isn't appropriate. Also, this 911 call took place in San Francisco, another urban metropolis with majority "liberal" residents. The belief that racism only happens in rural "conservative" areas is a myth. This instance is more akin to covert racism than overt racism, since the call was about the little girl lacking a seller's permit, which was technically true. As Chester Pierce writes, "Covert, racially-biased decisions are often hidden or rationalized with an explanation that society is more willing to accept. These racial biases cause a variety of problems that work to empower the suppressors while diminishing the rights of the oppressed. Covert racism often works subliminally, and often much of the discrimination is being done subconsciously." When this woman publicly apologized, she insisted that her call was really about a noise complaint and wasn't racially motivated. This is the plausible deniability that she attributed to her behavior. Remember, confronting our own biases is uncomfortable and difficult. But it is necessary, for each of us.
