It's impossible to convey in a single photograph the sheer number of Green-winged Orchids growing at Bernwood Meadows in Oxfordshire this year. To even begin to estimate how many plants are growing in the damp fields is daunting, but I'm guessing at between 20 and 30 thousand, but that's a shot in the dark, and there could be so many more. It's a truly breathtaking and unforgettable botanical wonder. It may have been a miserable dull and wet winter and early spring, but these beautiful Orchids have really enjoyed it and are thriving. @rootsandallpod talks to Nick Macer, plant hunter, self-taught botanist, rare species expert and owner of @panglobalplants, a nursery based in the Severn Valley, which, to quote the website, offers “a selection of the finest, most desirable and often rarest plants capable of growing on these isles”. And that’s key – Nick hand selects plants, in the past, directly from where they were growing in the wild and brings them into cultivation. He’s renowned for choosing sublime varieties and for openly sharing his knowledge and experience. Pinus aristata 'Jeddeloh's Zwerg' - ein anmutiger Zwerg der Grannenkiefer. Minimalistisch kegelförmig wachsend mit einem Zuwachs von knapp 3-4cm. Eigentlich zeigen Pinus aristata sehr schöne Harzflocken an den Nadeln, was bei meinem Exemplar anfangs so war und mit der Zeit verschwunden ist. Die Nadelfarbe kommt jetzt mit dem Neuaustrieb am besten zur Geltung! Sedum uniflorum is an endemic Japanese succulent which grows predominantly on sea cliffs in the Ryukyu islands and southern Kyushu. It was originally described in 1838, but was only recently elevated to species rank in 2018. This week I was fortunate to stumble upon Asarum fudsinoi, known locally in Japan as Fujino Kan-Aoi (フジノカンアオイ). This endangered member of the Aristolochiaceae is found only on the Japanese island of Amamioshima. It produces lovely flowers at the base of the plant during the cooler months of the year (December-May) and is prized by many exotic plant collectors. Fortunately this plant is strictly protected in the wild by the Japanese government and the dedicated local rangers on the island. About yesterday... Important spring date for me - "Raritätenbörse" in the botanical garden from Vienna. On the one hand, to meet gardener friends, and on the other hand, of course, to get hold of plants that you can't easily find in traditional stores. I am more than satisfied with the yield.
