Figurative head of bearded cavalier in plumed hat c,1880s I’ve really enjoyed researching about meerschaum and the history of meerschaum pipes. Meerschaum is composed of fossilised shells of ancient sea life that collected and compressed over millions of years a heavy, fat, soft mineral that can be worked almost as easily as clay. The universally accepted legend about the discovery of meerschaum as a pipe medium is dated back to the 1720s. Meerschaum dissipates heat so well it provides an incredibly cool smoke and also has a slight impact on the taste of tobacco making it still today a favourite amongst pipe smokers all around the world. However these early meerschaum pipes are no longer prized for their smokeabilty they are cherished, valued and prized as objects of art. Gaston Audiffret-Pasquier was the grand-nephew and adopted son of Baron Etienne Denis Pasquier an academician. He inherited the title of duke in 1844, and became auditor at the council of state in 1846. He was a prominent 19th century policitican. Helleu is known to have made at least two etchings of his wife, Jenny Fontenilliat, a famous beauty, of which this is an example. Condition: Paper loss to the top right margin far from the image. Paul Cesar Helleu (1859 - 1927) We have just agreed to purchase a group of drypoint etchings by this renowned “Belle Epoch” artist - Enquiries please DM or em [email protected] Title: Le Noeud bleu The blue knot Medium: Original drypoint etching, circa 1910, signed by the artist in pencil Size: 56 x 35 cms, 22 x 13.75” Inches Edition: These etchings were normally not made in set edition numbers but were printed off, “on demand” , by the artist. Today one finds a large number of different types but not large numbers of each. Probably they were made in editions of 100 or less. Note: Helleu is best known for his portraits of society ladies made during the Edwardian period during the “age of elegance” or “Belle Epoch”. In 1886, Helleu befriended Robert de Montesquiuo, the poet and aesthete. Montesquiou’s cousin, the Countess Greffukhe, enabled Helleu to expand his career as a portrait artist to elegant women in the highest ranks of Paris society and these portraits provide the basis for his modern reputation. His subjects included the Duchess of Marlborough, The Marchessa Casati, Belle da Costa Green, Louise Cheruit and Helena Rubinstein. Many of his subjects are not identifiable today. "La Femme aux Cheveus d'or et son Garde" is a unique and ORIGINAL watercolor and ink on paper executed in 1967. The artwork is signed on lower right. **The work relates to the frontispiece for Poemes Secret, a suite of 18 etchings commissioned by Pierre Argillet based on the writings of Guillaume Apollinaire, a French writer important to the literary development of the Surrealism movement. In this work, Dali illustrates the sensual poems Apollinaire wrote in love letters he sent to the schoolteacher Madeleine Pagès from the battle trenches of World War I. A bare breasted Madelaine is featured with an appendage supported by a crutch, her golden tresses cascading down her back as a guard (presumably Apollinaire) wearing a flamboyantly plumed hat, stands watch next to her with spear in hand. Totally over the moon to have had the fabulously elaborate hat I created for fantasy fashion model @jumeria photographed and showcased to her 99,000 followers! She asked me to recreate the kind of hat worn by 18th-century aristocrat Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire, as seen in the 2008 film The Duchess, to go with a beautiful costume dress she was making. Georgiana was famed for her headwear - favouring straw hats with big brims, high at the back and elaborately decorated with flowers and feathers. So I set to work, adding plumes of rust and gold feathers, dried roses, poppyseed heads and grasses, before carefully packaging it and posting it to Jumeria in Germany. Maitland Smith vintage dummy board with his plumed hat, lace collars and cuffs, and holding his sword in a very regal, gallant pose. In the 1700's and 1800's dummy boards were placed in shops and homes to deter burglars and enemy soldiers.
