Plumeria propagation ✨ This is the process I go through every March: I take a good length of a cutting with a serrated knife let it dry for a week and then plant it in a very chunky mix and top it with gravel so the cutting won’t move around. Dumpster diving got me this beautiful plumeria. It was a three foot tall section that was trimmed off as part of some spring pruning and just tossed out. Why, right?!? This plumeria (frangipani) seed pod is the one I collected up on my roof a month ago. The seeds germinated really easily. it’s hard to believe that these little guys will become trees. Nature is so fascinating. It never ceases to amaze me!💚 By the way, the tree the seed pod is from makes white flowers. But there are also yellow and fuchsia plumerias close by. Eighteen long months ago, this “stick” was a souvenir from my bosses upon their return from a trip to Hawaii. It took six months alone to root. Some told me I’d never get it to bloom this far north (I’m in Zone 4a - this poor thing literally experienced-30 degree weather to get to my house from the office). Today, the first of what appears to be many, many, many flowers (like over 75 blossoms when I counted) opened. Plumeria tree 🌳 They are now dormant. So there is no leaves on the tree right now. So, we thought let's try propagating these using cutting method. I havent researched when is the prime time for cutting plumeria. We have seen directly planting the cuttings in the soil gives best results to grow roots from one of these stems. I have left the cutting in a shady place to let callus form in the wounded plant. We will plant it tomorrow or day after tomorrow if time permits. ☘️☘️Save this post for later.. Plumeria/Champa propagation update- I tried propagating plumeria with 3 cuttings of different sizes about a month ago and to my surprise one of them is already showing new leaves (other two are dead). I am still not sure if this will survive in winters or not but let’s hope for the best. I used the standard method for propagation. 👉🏻Cut the stem with a sharp and sterilize cutter 👉🏻Store cutting for 4/5 days to dry out white sticky substance coming out of it 👉🏻Remove all the leaves from cutting 👉🏻Plant plumeria cutting in soil 👉🏻 Water them after planting and then let them dry for atleast one week 👉🏻Keep them in direct sun After 4/5 weeks if you are lucky then you might witness new leaves growing. Here are few more important tips which I learned from this experience- 👉🏻Use thick and healthy cutting 👉🏻Height from 8-12 inches long 👉🏻Sterilize cutter 👉🏻Let the milky substances dry out completely before planting 👉🏻Avoid watering them too much 👉🏻Best time for plumeria propagation is summers and spring. ☘️☘️☘️Have you tried propagating any plant? My plumeria cutting is doing great! My sister brought me some cuttings from her yard. The one in front took root and is growing beautiful leaves. 🌷 The second cutting she gave me had pink flowers and it didn’t make it. It was probably my fault because I didn’t remove the flowers and leaves. The flower buds all bloomed and then the cutting dried up. I knew I was supposed to remove all that because the blooms take energy away from the roots but I wanted to see the pretty flowers. 🌹 I already had one that I got at a plant trade and that one is in the back and has been steadily getting better every year. Another happy dance 💃💃. Around a month back I found a broken plumeria stem just an inch long. Since I didn't have this variety of champa, I thought why not give a try to propagate it. Watched few videos and thats it. Today I saw these new leaves and I can't tell you how happy I am. (I used apple cider vinegar as rooting hormone) In lockdown since I was not able to visit nursery, the itch for new plants gave me this immense happiness. I has a plumeria cutting thanks to the badass Viking goddess @punkrockpancakes . She’s a crafty sweet gal with cute lil creatures 🥰🥰 Her tree is soooo cute and in bloom and she has a green thumb herself 🥰 This is my first plumeria so I read up a bit to make sure the propagation success odds are in my favor. From what I gathered reading: 1. You dip in either liquid or powdered rooting hormone with fungicide to reduce the chances of the cutting becoming infected. I used the powdered I had on hand. 2. Store it in a warm and dry place and allow a “scab” to form at the site of where it was cut so that it doesn’t absorb excess water and rot the cutting. 3. Then you can proceed with water or soil propagation. It’s recommended to use a soil mixture of about 2/3 perlite and 1/3 potting soil if going that route, or using distilled water and ensuring the glass or bucket is tall and sturdy enough to support the cutting. So I now will be patiently waiting for that scab to form so I can proceed 🥰
Propagation time 🌱 Few days back we had this unexpected, strange weather, it was like a mini-cyclone! As much as it was exciting to see some rain in this blazing Dubai summer, it left a very bitter feeling in the end - lots of trees and plants in our beautiful community got uprooted and destroyed. It was heart-breaking to see countless Champa trees in full bloom lying on the ground with thousands of flowers still spreading their scent as they wilt away in a day or two. I have cut some branches of these dying plants hoping to salvage some life out of this destruction.
