Facebook "Licensed!" posts are funny. The way us Maltese celebrate getting a license after turning 18 because we can finally leave the house without asking a parent to drive us. In Malta, we don't have a functional public transport system. So, we are forced into buying an expensive, 2 tonne, high cost, high maintenance, metal box when we turn 18 to finally get some independence. (For us fortunate enough to afford one). Car users are not responsible for causing traffic. They simply want to go from A to B in the most convenient way possible. Those responsible are the actual decision makers (the rich & politicians). We need to put pressure on these decision makers to invest in Public Transport that benefits EVERYONE! Studies show that if public transport is convenient, people use it. But since its not, they would rather spend thousands of their income instead of literally free public transport that would take them 3 hours to travel 10km. The same goes for bikes. The awareness Rota is raising is astounding. However, for a real shift to happen, the bike infrastructure needs to be put in place first so people make the shift. Examples: Seville, Rotterdam, Lyon, Paris.. All three of these are important to the success of a space, and for translating the desired experiences of users into reality. You may have a great event planned, but if the physical space does not provide enough shade in the blaring heat, people won't stick around. An area of space may be beautifully designed, but if there aren’t any scheduled activities there, people may never spend time there. You may set up a fantastic activation for people to engage with in a public space, but if it is not attended to over multiple weeks, it could fall apart at the start. I had a 3 hour timeframe to check out the #Odense #cyclingnetwork and it blew me away. As it first started focusing on cycling in 1895, calls itself Denmark’s #CyclingCity and it’s easy to see why with over 330 miles of well designed and connected #bicyclenetwork serving its 200k+ residents. The network is similar to Copenhagen’s with one-way #protectedbikelanes but is different in some regards with off street grid #multiusepaths connecting key destinations in the old city center with some on unique paving patterns. The third step in our process of Change & Placemaking is: “Engage With Users.” Engagement is a powerful tool for change-making, and we’ve got a few tips for making sure the questions you ask and data you gather have the greatest impact: - Determine what users want to DO in a space; - Prioritize the wants and needs of those who are most present in the space on a regular basis; - Create a positive experience for those who get involved, and get people excited about what is actually possible; - Create a real sense of ownership to build project support. When an engagement process is complete, you should have a robust list of the most important experiences that those most present in the space want to have. Venserpolder, build in the 1980’s, is an enclosed neighborhood with mainly social housing and a limited range of public facilities. The sports strip on the west side of Venserpolder is one of the few green public spaces. In the old situation it was a collection of sports facilities and equipment that had been placed incoherently over the years. This led to a place full of dilapidated facilities that were almost never used. The aim of the project was to create a more attractive public sports location, where local residents can exercise and meet each other in a green environment. Because the budget was very limited, we chose to work with industrial concrete slabs as the base material. This is relatively inexpensive and provides a distinctive look from the standard use of materials in the neighborhood. With these concrete slabs, we designed a grid that facilitates spaces for sports, seating platforms, plants and flowers. The reorganization of the facilities and the uniformity in materialization contribute to the cohesion of the area. As a result, although no new facilities have been added, the area has become much more vibrant and better used than before. The grid can grow over time and allows for new sports functions to be added in the future. #publicspacedesign #amsterdam #urbansports

Geranium versicolor. I know Geraniums feature in almost every garden scheme and garden - so I take them for granted most of the time. But when you stop to look, they can be plant perfection ❤️ I wandered into St John’s churchyard garden in Waterloo last week - and found some beautiful planting associations - this Geranium was planted alongside Thalictrum and Lamium orvala, set off by some hedge garlic. Besides creating ceramic sculptures, I’m sometimes asked for commissioned works and designs for public spaces. Today, this seating object that I designed for the residents of Werkendam in collaboration with the municipality of Altena and several sponsors who executed it, was unveiled. Werkendam is a village of boatmen and therefore I based my design on an upturned ship's hull. This ‘bench’ is a lovely place where people can look out over the river in a sheltered way. It was a very nice commission and beautifully executed by shipbuilders and ship carpenters. After the unveiling, we had a nice glass of wine at the local pub with those who were involved.
