Mondays are Spelling Days: What will you miss about Middle School? NOTHING; SOMETIMES TEASED… My biggest nightmare has come true. We started with this question: What will you miss about middle school? Each student in 8th Grade was asked this question so their answers can be included in the slideshow at graduation. Gabe very rigorously spelled NOTHING. I reminded him of some positive memories that I’m aware of like being on Cross Country and the weight room with Mr. Gardiner. Gabe spelled RUNNING and indicated that he meant running in the halls and as a sport. Gabe Spelled: LIKE MANY STUDENTS I WIlLL MISS MY GOOD CHILDHOOD At this point I had a question because I wasn’t sure if he was spelling that he likes many students and he will miss them along with his good childhood. I asked him if he was saying he likes many students. That’s when I wish we had stopped. Gabe Spelled: SOMETIMES TEASED I asked him where? Gabe Spelled: CLEAN CAFETERIA This is the first time Gabe has shared that he is teased at school. One of the hardest things about parenting a child with ADHD is getting your child to do what you ask. ADHD symptoms—trouble paying attention, being impulsive, and being hyperactive—can get in the way of understanding and following instructions. But if your child learns how to overcome or adapt to their symptoms, they can develop the skills needed for success in life. One tip to help your child overcoming ADHD symptoms is to set daily routines. An action becomes a habit through continual reminders and repetition. For example, brushing teeth eventually becomes a habit when you repeatedly remind the child to do it twice a day, such as after breakfast and before going to bed. Write down your daily routines and post them where you will see them often. The nonspeaking community continues to be very toxic towards the intellectually disabled community. And continues to throw them under the bus in many cases. I’ve had a discussion with a nonspeaking person, and they said how they use the term nonspeaking because they don’t want to be associated with intellectually disabled people. And how separating yourself from intellectually disabled people isn’t bad. That sealed the cake for me, and I’ve been using nonverbal and reclaiming it in a way. If you want to be separated from me then fine. But then don’t come crying to me and saying why I should use the term nonspeaking when a HUGE part of the nonspeaking community hates intellectually disabled people and wants to be separated from them. Intellectually disabled people who can’t speak or can speak very little are here. We use the terms we want to use. On Thursday Arthur woke up quite upset. He wouldn’t come downstairs, wouldn’t eat or drink. I did manage to get him downstairs and dressed, but he was still quite upset and wouldn’t leave standing by the front door. I was due to go to work so I was preparing everything for me and the kids and when it came to leaving the house Arthur became really upset and wouldn’t leave. This never happens. Arthur usually wants to run out the door as soon as it opens. I tried to carry him but he was hitting and kicking me and trying to put himself on the ground, pulling my hand and crying. He may not be able to talk but he was trying to tell me something wasn’t right…I had to listen to that. He didn’t want me to leave him so I didn’t. He didn’t go to playschool, I didn’t go to work. We sat by the front door for a long time whilst he calmed down and then managed to get him to his bedroom and that’s where we stayed for the rest of the day. Not sure why other than it’s April and this is the month our Sweet T was injured 4 years ago - but I have been experiencing big emotions today. She celebrated turning 5 - and seeing her recent growth has been exciting. I don’t know if it’s because it’s Autism Awareness Month but there has been a lot of information finally being shared regarding vaccines causing Autism. It was really great to see my biggest in such good spirits yesterday. As I’m finally getting stronger I’ll be looking to bring the two little ones back in for visits and hope that’s not a back track. I still can’t believe she’s almost 18. Looking at adult options for her is really daunting. She’s still my baby and she’s been so happy with her current track that it’s hard to know she’s going to have such big changes in future. Having a nonverbal child with severe learning difficulties and autism as my oldest, I always knew this time would eventually come no matter how much I wanted to freeze our lives and keep her as just that, a child. I just wish there was a way to know exactly the best option for her and exactly how to help her with the transition. Thursdays are Spelling Days: SOME HOPE GOING STRONG. BOYHOOD IS TOUGH, SUPPORT NEEDED FASTER. IS QUITE NEW AND SCARY After Gabe spelled each word he went to his device and typed it. He is getting faster at spelling with the letter board and typing on his device. Typing is not as easy for him. I kept thinking about what he was saying. “Some hope going strong” this is positive! “Boyhood is tough, support needed faster. Is quite new and scary” Wow! Needing more support is something he shares about a lot. I am proud of him for being able to identify that he feels scared. Ingrid told him he is not alone in feeling this way. She is right! When he finished he was happy and laughing again. What a relief it must be to get that out. We have been reading Underestimated: An Autism Miracle, by JB Handley and his son Jamison Handley. I did not get to hear all of it yet, but Caroline finished reading it to Gabe. Each night we shed many tears. I highly recommend it, please get this book if you have an interest in learning about this method of communication. It makes you feel hopeful and it also makes you feel regret. For not presuming competence and for not giving Gabe this opportunity sooner. He is not yet 15 and he is on his way to freedom. I know it. Autism & Water Safety gives me so much anxiety 😬 As if special needs parents don’t have enough things to worry about, RIGHT? We hear about the horror stories of our babies drowning in pools, lakes and other bodies of water. Mere curiosity to say the least. How can we prevent and educate our babies about water safety? For Carmelo he was always a water lover, just flat out curious. EXPOSURE was key for us. Living in South Florida, we are surrounded by water; pools, beaches and lakes. I started as early as 1 years old when I noticed he had a love for water. From splash pads, to pools, he turned into a water bug. I can’t pin point exactly how Carmelo learned how to swim because no official “swimming lessons” were taught. Although he did take a “water safety” class once; he just gradually became more confident in the water as time past. Now I’m relieved to know that for his age and ability, Carmelo has developed into an excellent swimmer. He knows his limits and he is able to associate the numbers in the pools to the depth of that area. He may not be one of the best swimmers but I’m content with his comfort level in varied bodies of water. He understands that lakes are a big No and the beach is a no go with the unpredictable tides.
