Yesterday, March 8th was International Women’s Day 💗, and it’s a day to remember how far women have come, and what needs to be done to keep women moving forwards ➡️. To me, it’s important to always remember the importance of women, and how they help shape and change the world 🌍. Not just on one day, but every day. To be honest, I feel this way about all the special events that come up once a year. Christmas, Valentine’s Day, Black History Month and so many others 🤩. Women have had to fight so hard to get the same rights and opportunities as men, so let’s continue to remember the power and amazingness of women ✨, and keep doing our bit to help women have more parity 💪🏽. I’ve spent the last 5 years working for a charity supporting children and young people who have experienced the death of of a parent that served in the Armed Forces. Yesterday was my last day and now I’m off on a new journey as a Student Mentor. I’ve met the most incredible and inspiring people along the way whom have taught me so much these include colleagues that have become friends, 100s of children and their parents/carers and incredible volunteers that give their time to help the charity deliver the programmes of support. When people see me, they sometimes say I remind them of my dad or that we look similar. I’ve been told we have similar personalities, which I like, and we also support the same football teams. I always like being told I’m like my dad, especially by family members. Hero of the Month: Marine James Wright (1988 – 2011) "He was so excited and came back to be there for my 20-week scan. He took that scan photo back to Afghanistan with him and stuck it to the wall of his tent." - Shelley, James’ partner. Three days before leaving on his first operational tour to Afghanistan, James discovered he would be a dad. On the 5th of August 2011, James was killed in action. His daughter, Lily, was born on the 3rd of December 2011, less than four months later. The kids and I always watch videos of mummy cooking food that she liked, doing a bit of arts and crafts, and watching her favourite films. It's a tough day, so the kids like to spend it doing things they find comforting." - Blakey, Sarah's husband. Blakey also shares how Sarah's funeral took place on November 12, 2020, just after Remembrance Day, making it a challenging time. The 2-minute silence is always emotional, and the family have never gotten through it without tears. Still, they value remembering together. She then married me, and I was also serving at the time and still am now. It was always a very big part of her life.” Sarah served in the Army for four years. She would dress up and do fashion shows for him, and when she was a baby, he always enjoyed swaddling her and calling her a little burrito." Izzy's mum, Ange. Peter served for three years, during which time he and his wife welcomed their daughter, Isabelle. On the 29th of January 2019, Peter died in a road traffic accident. Izzy was just 8. After returning from the tour in Afghanistan, he had just been put forward to be promoted.” - Emily, Daniel's wife. When Daniel joined the parachute regiment, his cheeky personality and love of sport helped him fit in almost immediately. His uncle had served in the same regiment before dying in the Falklands. His colleagues have told me that after going back out, he talked about Logan all the time and showed them all his picture.” - Emily, Daniel's wife. Logan, was born on the 21st of February 2011. Daniel and Logan could only spend a few short days together before he had to leave again. Just under a month later, Daniel was fatally wounded. He died from his injuries on the 18th of March 2011. He was 25 years old. His three sons, Dylan, Harvey and Ethan, were just 7, 6 and 2. MAY 5TH ✋🏿 MMIWG2S+ RED DRESS DAY TW: VERY SENSITIVE CONTENT We remember, honour and mourn Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit People. We grieve for the tremendous loss to their families, communities and our country. Indigenous women, girls and Two-Spirited + peoples are five times more likely to experience violence than any other population in Canada and this violence tends to result in more serious harm. Nikki Komaksiutiksak, the executive director of Tunngasugit, an Inuit resource centre based in Winnipeg is asking for our government to declare a state of emergency for the ongoing violence against these indigenous peoples. The House of Commons recently adopted the motion on unanimous consent. However, it remains unclear if or when this will happen. There has also been a call on the government to create and fund a public alert system - like Amber Alerts for missing children, a Red Dress Alert would send emergency notifications to the public when an Indigenous woman, girl or two-spirit person goes missing.
