We're shining a spotlight on our 'The War at Home' exhibition... Taken in 1943, at this time Lee Miller was increasingly moving away from shooting fashion editorial in Vogue Studios to on-location reportage series such as this. 🌾During the Second World War, the Women's Land Army (WLA), affectionately known as the Land Girls, was resurrected to fill the shoes of male farm workers called up for military service. Lee's photographs captured the Land Girls' experience in British Vogue's May 1943 issue: 'The city girl soon learns what mud is like, and gets used to the misery of getting out of bed on grim cold mornings in winter.' Lee's photographs accompanied several British Vogue features, immortalizing the WLA's invaluable contributions to the nation's food production during wartime. 🎟️'The War at Home' runs until 21 July 2024. Many of us want to help the people of Gaza. I hear people say I want to adopt an orphan from there etc. I think it’s beautiful to have that intent- and we should never stop speaking about oppression and spreading awareness. But whilst holding fundraisers and such, remember to fix things at home. Remember to pay heed to the war at home. The most common one right now is the tug of war between separated parents where a child is involved. With the ongoing ‘he said/she said’ the welfare of the child is lost. Then there’s another common one; family conflict. I mediate between couples and one of the things I make clear is that I’m not a sponge for slurs at the other party. Rather, it’s about building bridges not burning them. When one party then doesn’t want to comply or aim for peace but rather conflict and ‘winning’ the sessions come to a halt and I work on individual wellbeing sessions because it’s needed especially when one side is wanting calm and the other chaos. Someone who wants chaos will keep creating scenarios where they’re the victim. You can’t change that- but you can focus on what you can control. And that is you- your self care, your priorities and your boundaries. I worked with couples that I knew were heading to divorce- the only thing I could do was give support after the process through the grief and help them understand to be fair and honourable towards each other post separation. As Muslims, we’re really blessed to have that instruction in Surah Al Baqarah. If you want to help Gaza, start on your own homes. Don’t go days in misery and conflict. They don’t have a choice, but you do. Ask yourself why conflict is appealing to you and calm and peace is not. What behaviours are you enabling? . . Failure to Launch, series, The War at Home. . ( Trigger warning ⚠️ for self harm ) . It was bad. My son couldn’t sleep for more than 15 minutes at a time and I would spend a 1/2 hour to 45 minutes trying to sooth him back to sleep. Every night the same - sleep for 15 minutes, awake for about 45 and then asleep for 15. The doctors and nurses were of no help; dismissing ,lecturing and labelling me a “first time mom “ at every turn. The nights were long and the days were even longer because I wasn’t getting any sleep while trying to help my son sleep. This would go on for more than six years. Every morning I would plan our ending. I would try to figure out how to get my son in his stroller and both of us out of the house to the bus and then to the train station so I could launch us both off the platform as the train was coming and finally put an end to both of our pain and suffering. Every morning I would make the beds, lay out our burial clothes and then get busy vacuuming, tiding the house, doing the laundry and feeding the cats. I did not to not want to put anyone out by leaving my mess or work behind. But by the time I got all that work and taking care of my sons needs done, I was too exhausted to get us both to the train station. I did this every day for over two years completely convinced that tomorrow it would all work out; I was sure that tomorrow I wouldn’t fail at getting us to the train station. My son and I exist today because of all my failures to get us to the train station. And I am reminded of this fact every time I think about all the times my husband repeatedly told me, directly or indirectly, that he couldn’t help with his son because he needed to get some sleep because he was the one that had to “work” in the morning. . . Letting Go, series - The War at Home . I used to love to hold hands.What I loved most was that my hand was chosen, that I was chosen; I was worthy. I was worthy of others seeing that I was someone that another cared for and that they didn’t mind who saw it. Holding hands felt grounding, connective and attentive. But holding hands with my husband only happened while in public or when others could see, it slowly became a show of ownership; a look what I have and you don’t. I remember times when I was being dragged through multiple crowds by my hand, being knocked about by strangers because he didn’t bother to look back; only seeing ‘his’ way through. He just wouldn’t let go as he made ‘his way’ through the crowd and so I bounced off the bodies of strangers like a ball tethered to a string; and others noticed. This being battered and bruised was perfectly acceptable to him even when I said it wasn’t; a not so little thing amongst menagerie of the increasingly ‘off’ little things he did to further show me my worth. I’ll forevermore regret my telling him why I liked holding hands but I have resigned myself to never making a mistake like that again . I’ve learned, no, I’ve been repeatedly taught and conditioned that when I share any personal intimacies that the very things I love will be manipulated and used against me or solely used for the other’s gain and gratification. So, sadly, I’ve come to understand that because I’m bashed and bruised that I only attract opportunistic users. "Eisenhower Farm" Hiya, folks. Told ya we were up to Up To No Good. ;) We have returned to the annual WWII Weekend at the Eisenhower Farm National Historic Site in Gettysburg, PA. And just like Rose Hill a few weeks ago, boy have we been clobbered! (Not a bad thing!) This post has been under construction for over four hours! We are teamed up with our friends from the 26th Cavalry Regiment (Philippine Scouts). Per the request of the US National Park Service, this year's focus is 1943, and in turn, we are representing the 104th Cavalry Regiment of the US Army. In part, the 104th was sent to Oregon in 1943. Thus, we have tailored our impression of the Coast Artillery to cover the Harbor Defenses of Puget Sound (Washington State) and also of the Columbia River (Between Washington and Oregon). “Carnage In Philly – The Frankford Junction Wreck” 80 Years Ago - (Mon) Sep 6, 1943, Frankford Junction, PA: It’s been one week since the catastrophic train wreck at Wayland, NY. The Lackawana Limited struck a freight train, resulting in 29 dead and 114 injured (Please see our post from 8/30). However, the disaster quickly vanishes from the newspapers as the War At Home continues. As WW2 rages, the world still turns in the US. Against the back drop of the ‘Home Front,’ Daily life goes on. However, set against the fever-pitch of War Production and an unceasing 24/7 schedule, accidents still happen, and tragedy still strikes. Repeatedly. It’s Labor Day. American workers are the backbone of the Arsenal of Democracy, and, as our troops destroy enemy forces with the weapons and materials they’ve built, those who have earned a precious day off are doing their best to enjoy it. The Congressional Limited is a passenger train of the Pennsylvania Railroad. Today, owing to the high passenger traffic, 16 cars make up the Limited, pulled by a GG-1 Electric Locomotive. She pulls out of Union Station in Washington, DC at 4:00 PM, bound for NYC, with 541 passengers onboard. At 6:06 PM, the Limited is passing Frankford Junction in NE Philadelphia when track workers see flames coming from one of Car No. 7’s trucks – an axle is about to sieze. Before they can stop the train, disaster strikes. What follows is the stuff of nightmares. The axle seizes, snaps, catches the truck, and hurls the car in the air. It strikes an adjacent gantry crane and is ripped open like a tin can. Car 8 is launched, hits the crane, and is crushed around it. Wreckage, debris…and passengers are hurled through the air. 6 more cars derail; the last 2 remain on the tracks. Immediately, calls for help go out and rescue personnel pour into the area. US military troops who were on the train on leave help the rescue as the living and the dead are cut from the wreckage with torches from a nearby shipyard; temporary morgues and hospitals spring up around the wreck site. It’s 24 hours before the last bodies are recovered The Butcher’s Bill is steep… 117 are injured. 79 more are dead.

“Carnage In Wayland – The Lackawana Limited Wreck” 80 Years Ago, Today – (Mon) August 30, 1943, Wayland, NY: As WW2 rages, the world still turns here in the US. Against the back drop of the Home Front, life goes on as people go about their daily lives. However, set against the fever-pitch of War Production and an unceasing 24/7 schedule, accidents still happen, and tragedy still strikes. Such is the case today. The Lackawana Limited is a passenger train known for it’s peaceful scenic run from New Jersey through New York. Today, it pulls out of Hoboken with one locomotive pulling 13 passenger cars and 2 mail cars – and 500 souls. It travels up through New York State, stopping at Binghamton, south of Syracuse. 120 miles up the track, in Wayland, Steuben County, a freight train has gotten the word that the Limited is inbound. It dutifully pulls onto a siding. However, for reasons unknown, they pull back onto the “Main Line” to switch out cars adjacent to a factory, just as the Lackawana Limited arrives at full speed. What follows is the stuff of nightmares. It’s not a direct collision, but a sideswipe of the freight locomotive against the passing engine and first several cars of the Limited. Cars, and the freight engine, are ripped open like tin cans. Invariably, one of the passenger cars comes to halt against the shattered boiler of the freight engine… trapped inside, many of the passengers are roasted alive by the roaring steam. Several are scalded beyond recognition, and it takes nearly a week to identify them. Immediately, calls for help go out and rescue personnel pour into the area. US military troops who were on the train help cordon the area off as the living and the dead are cut from the wreckage; temporary morgues and hospitals spring up around the wreck site. Recovery efforts run through the night, and due to necessity of lighting the scene, the blackout is lifted. The Butcher’s Bill is steep… 114 are injured. 29 more are dead; the youngest is a 9-year-old girl – whose mother dies with her. And, unbeknownst to those who endure this tragedy, another horrifying, and even worse wreck is just a week away. ~ Never Forgotten ~

“WAR ZONE" (Note – the more detailed version of this post, including the full 80 Years Ago, Today - (Sun) August 8th, 1943, Headquarters, Eastern Defense Command, Fort Jay, Governors Island, NY Harbor: In 2023, snapping photos of, well, anything, on our phones is done without a second thought. In the 1940's, it was a wee bit harder, using film photography and real cameras, but Americans have always loved to take photos of well, anything. One universal love for shutterbugs is the beach, then and now. However, barely 24 hours after the loss of the two PV-1 Venturas from Floyd Bennet Field at the hands of U-566, a massive edict is announced on the 8th, and issued on the 9th... a reminder that we may live at the shore, but that shore is an active War Zone. And right now, it belongs to the US Army. From this point forward, Lieutenant General Hugh A. Drum, the Commanding General of the Eastern Defense Command, the overseeing Army entity from Canada to the Caribbean, has issued Proclamation Number 5, decreeing that photography anywhere near the beach, for any reason, is hereby forbidden under the guise of military security. "The Arsenal Of Democracy" This was one of the most inspiring and humbling experiences I've ever had in almost 20 years of World War II living-history. There were almost SEVENTY vehicles in this field for an aerial group photo, ranging from WWII to Vietnam, and from humble Jeeps up to tanks, through some of the rarest of all support and cargo trucks we ever made. This is a drop in the bucket to what we churned out from the assembly lines during WWII, but to see these precious few surviving examples, all lined up together, was absolutely awe-inspiring. This isn’t a hobby - it's a privilege. INCIDENCE REPORTING Dear Public, This is to notify you all that I escaped an ATTEMPTED MURDER the (second time)by my husband last night. He wanted to murder me with the kitchen knife and a cutlass he brought out from his car around 9pm, I raised an alarm and my two neighbors ( Male and female) came out and intervened. The female neighbor collected the cutlass and the kitchen knife from him and hid it in her house last night. He has driven out with my two children to God knows where, this morning. I have notified my father-in-law, my dad,our last born and my only surviving blood sister this morning as he seized my phone since last night, so that I won't expose him. I even had to sleep in one of my female neighbor's house last night as to be safe. It was the 2 neighbors who pleaded with him to release my phone this morning that he listened to and gave it to me. NB: This incidence happened on his birthday, July 27th, 2023. "That's All, Folks!" Well, all good things must come to an end, and another phenomenal living-history weekend is in the books. One of the most bittersweet moments of an event weekend, shown here, is the teardown. We (reluctantly) pull modern vehicles into the camp, take everything down, and it pack it all up as we return to the 21st Century. This was an absolutely incredible weekend.
