Horse Shoe Pit Viper About: Craspedocephalus strigatus, commonly known as the horseshoe pit viper, is a species of venomous snake in the subfamily Crotalinae of the family Viperidae. The species is endemic to the Western Ghats of India. The common name of the species is based on the presence of a pale buff horseshoe-shaped (i.e., inverted "U") mark on the nape. The preferred natural habitats of C. strigatus are montane forests, shola patches, and grasslands, at altitudes of 1,100–2,400 m (3,600–7,900 ft). C. strigatus is terrestrial, with most of the sightings on the ground or on rock formations. Unaware about the species people kill this non-venomous snake. Malayan Forest Gecko, Old Magazine House, Karnataka, May 2023 . To be honest I do not know much about lizards and geckos. That night we were going around in the resort looking for some owls and found this cool looking gecko on the ground. We failed to get the owl, although we did hear its calls. Lurking danger.. Hump-nosed pit vipers(HNPV) are one of the commonest species of venomous snakes found in Western ghats. Unlike Malabar Pitvipers which usually prefers to be on twigs and stems of small plants, these snakes stay on the ground and stone surfaces and wait for the unsuspecting prey to come near to them. As a matter of fact, the trekkers who take wild trials and forest lovers often come across this snake while simply walking or trekking on the forest floor. Eventhough the snake doesn't get agitated so easily, they can jump and attack if they really get disturbed and moreover they are too much well camouflaged with the surroundings. Interestingly they are seen quite abundantly during rainy season; just my observation; not sure any one else thinks the same.. Actually I was photographing a juvenile Hump nosed on a stone and suddenly I found the head of another snake just few feets away and thats when I took the first photo. I came across the second individual while I was just wandering around the forest floor. At the end of my forest walk I came across 4 individuals of HNPV and so it was definitely a Hump nosed day for me. Inspired from the post by @prasanthdasds ,we're glad to document this wonderful species which is nothing short of a dragon and we have lovingly named it as " the farm dragon" which is an intricate part of #magadha_diversity Called as #draco - #reptile that “flies”. Well, almost. It actually glides from tree to tree in search of insects with the help of a wing-like membrane known as “patagium” This “Southern Flying Lizard” is technically known as Draco dussumieri. It is uniquely and specifically found in the #westernghats The lizards are #arboreal (tree-dwelling). Besides hill forests, they are also found in nearby palm and areca nut plantations. Their home range consists of a few trees. Males are in the habit of maintaining small territories of two to three trees, which they patrol and chase away intruding males. Females move freely within the territory. The lizards move during the day from tree to tree in search of insects like ants and termites. They glide by extending the flaps of skin attached to the side of the body. They can cover a distance of nearly 10 metres when they glide from one tree to another. The tail acts as rudder, giving direction to the flight. Gliding between the trees is also an escape mechanism. This #lizard is also unique for its colouring. Its colour is brown, with grey patches resembling the pattern of tree bark. In case of males, the underside of the wing-like membrane is blue in colour while the females have yellow colour. As the wing-like membranes on either side of the body shine with a brilliant hue, it is also known as “Butterfly Lizard”. Though they spend their entire lifetime on trees, females come down to the ground for laying eggs in the soil. The Southern Flying Lizard is a unique fauna. The aesthetic value of watching it in flight is very rewarding. This is a Monilesaurus rouxii commonly called Forest Blood sucker 🤩🤩😀. This species is diurnal and an arboreal . This species of Lizard is endemic to the hills of peninsular India . These Western Ghats cat snakes are cryptic species complex and many times they will be unidentified even when you have all scale counts so there is absolutely no need to feel helpless or frustrated, that's limitation of present taxonomy and new revisions will yield clearer characters so as they can be identified on field with less doubts. Brahminy blind snake is the world's smallest known snake species which is about 10 centimeters. This feeds on eggs & larvae of ants & termites & an underground dweller which is an indicator of fertile soil similar to earthworms for which they've mistaken & hence she also got a name as "Brahminy worm snake". The head & tail are distinctly same but the tail has a sharp tip like extension. And the eyes are barely spotted & the scales throught the body from head to tail is same. Surprisingly, they are "parthenogenic" throughout its life which means they lay eggs without mating & so far known species are all female.
