It’s day 3 of #meettheflowerfarmeruk and the prompt is ‘reflection’. I have to admit to not being a particularly reflective person. I can be quite impulsive with an ‘onward and upward’ attitude. Whilst this can be sometimes useful, a lack of reflection can prevent us from improving our behaviour, our emotions, our work patterns, how we run our businesses etc. I love posts from @themindfulseasonalist who I often think of as someone who sets a great example where mindful reflection is concerned. As far as reflecting on my business is concerned, one decision I made for this year, after reflecting on the last, is to not take on too many large events or projects. I did exactly that last year (in the photo I’m setting up for a weeks willow weaving at #rhstattonflowershow in peak flower season!) Whilst I had a great time meeting some rather wonderful people, the time it took up ( and a couple of other events) meant that I took my eye off the ball on my flower field. Combined with abysmal weather, this meant that flower production wasn’t as good as it could be and I had to play catch up on jobs. I’m hoping for a less hurried year with seasonally appropriate weather with lots of flowers to go in bunches for local people, and to put on a good show for my PYO customers. Sunday last week I was at #rhstattonflowershow with @rootsandhyphae. I had a bodyguard holding an umbrella for me as we were getting ready to lunge into our Viva Magenta long border for the end of show plant sale, which is akin to Black Friday. Silver Gilt at the RHS Tatton Show and the Apothecary Garden featured on Gardener's World! ✨ What a few weeks, or months it's been in the run up to the show. Huge congratulations to @skylarkgd for such a beautiful garden, it was such a joy to be involved! There was a lot of interest in the herbs in the garden from the visitors to the show, some were amazed that all the herbs were medicinal. I've been approached to provide some consultancy for a garden being developed for another project. It's always wonderful to pass on my knowledge from the last five years of studying herbal medicine. With my PR hat on I'm planning to do more media outreach around this, and my dual job as a PR and Medical Herbalist. I used colour to represent the changing seasons in my ‘Sensing Time’ RHS Long Border. For summer I used pale pastel pinks fading into lilac and apricot and rich russet colours for autumn. My mum and I visited on what must have been the wettest day ever, absolutely chucked it down for most of the day but I actually really want to applaud the organisers, they did everything possible to make it safe for people so that was really great to see. The show must go on and it did so well. I was surprised how HUGE the event is, so much to do and I really do need to take a pull along trolley next time! It was such a joy to spend the whole of last week talking to so many lovely people about sustainable floristry, British flowers, gardening and drying flowers. I never thought so many people would comment on how they want to create their own drying racks for herbs and flowers or just how many people envisaged sitting on the bench and slowing down to appreciate everything around them in nature. My heart is so full. I miss my blooming garden already but excited for what is to come from here 🌱🌸 I also have to say a BIG thank you to those who helped me; 🌱 @silvergreyfoliage for all of the beautiful stunning blooms. You understood my vision and brief, supported me, delivered all of the flowers and just made everything come to life with your choices. 🌸 @grown_made for letting me go and pick all of the beautiful blooms to top up throughout the week. You weren't even around but still an absolute legend for talking us through everything the week before! Also, Charlotte who isn't on Instagram yet but is a wonderful upcoming flower farmer who provided all of the wonderful foliage. 🌱 My father in law who built this beautiful bench!!! Plus created the structure alongside my brother in law. 🌸 Sarah & Andy who were there with me on set up days, sourced the timber, helped put up the structure and the mechanics for the flowers plus drove me around to places when I needed it. Your support was everything! 🌱 @wearehowarth who provided some of the timber for the structure. Thank you so much for the (literal) support. 🌸 @movewithpaige who came to perform in my installation. Thank you for being such a beautiful presence. We made it into the @manchestereveningnews!!! 🌱 @lsfwholesale for all of the beautiful dried flowers which I incorporated and created the flower crowns with. Always the best quality dried blooms. Lastly, @hartley321 who is just the best husband I could ask for. The biggest support, my logistics manager, my drive to here, there and everywhere and just all round incredible human who gives everything to help me do what I do. I’ve had an amazing couple of days volunteering at the RHS Tatton Park Flower Show for @pandora.ryan on her beautiful long border show garden ‘Sensing Time’, which won a silver gilt medal.🤩 There was so much positive feedback from the public who loved the weaved willow infinity loop sculpture and the gorgeous planting scheme which was designed to represent the changing four seasons. First ever flower show @rhstatton_showteam a very wet day out but saw some beautiful flower, veg and fruit displays. 🌳💐🥕🍒I challenged myself not to buy plants so I turned to seeds instead 😂 A few highlights of the day included dried flowers, wildlife gardening by making small ponds, air plants and a fabulous seed producer in which I brought loofa seeds from. Watch this space 👀I also finally got to see @proctors_nursery display of the story of Staffordshire potteries which I have watched being developed along with the plants grown on @gardenersworldtv this year.
