The Roman Empire and the Crisis of the Third Century, c. 270 CE. A map illustrating the state of affairs in the lands of the Roman Empire following the violent death of Emperor Severus Alexander in 235 CE during a period known as the Crisis of the Third Century, as multiple pretenders staked a claim to the imperial throne (in 50 years, fifty-one individuals received the title of the Roman Emperor predominantly through military coups and most of them never reached Rome). The time of the "Crisis" was the most disruptive in Roman history as the Empire struggled not only with issues of succession, devaluation of the currency, and an inflationary economy but also with existential threats from breakaway states (the Gallic and the Palmyrene empires), the Persian Sassanid monarchy and countless barbarian invasions across the imperial frontier. On top of these, there was also the "Plague of Cyprian" (most probably smallpox or pandemic influenza, named after a chronicle by the Bishop of Carthage) which caused significant shortages of manpower for the army and the production of food. The crisis gradually came to an end as the Empire was stabilized through the military success of Aurelian (c. 270 CE) and the implementation of wide-ranging reform by Diocletian in 284 CE. map by 🐒 simeon.netchev published @whencyclopedia

Obverse: Bust of Theodosius II, helmeted, pearl-diademed, cuirassed, spear pointing forward, shield with horseman and enemy motif. Obverse caption: D N THEODO-SIVS P F AVG // Reverse: Roma, helmeted, draped, and Constantinopolis, helmeted, draped, enthroned, facing front, heads turned toward one another, holding sceptres in outer hands and supporting shield inscribed VOT/XV/MVL/XX between them; prow beneath right foot of Constantinopolis; star in left field. Reverse caption: GLORIA - REI – PVBLICAE. RIC: 207. Rare bust, a Solidus of superb quality. A magnificent specimen. Multiple scratches on the observe in front of the portrait, probably due to cleaning. Behind it, a cross, possibly graffiti. Cleaning has given the fields an artificial lustrous appearance. Remains of soil are visible on the reverse in the interstices of the engravings. Almost uncirculated AU 55-58 Comment: Remarkable engraving, very delicate giving superb representations, the shield with the horseman are clearly visible and the clothes are engraved with great precision. Reverse: VBERITAS AVG; Uberitas (goddess of fertility, particularly concerning agriculture) standing right holding standard, clasping hands with Carausius standing left holding spear. RSR mintmark. Second known example. So much character in this silver denarius portrait, and it just happens to be of an incredibly interesting, yet little known figure from British history; Carausius, emperor of Britain and northern Gaul 287-293 AD after usurping power from Rome. H is for... HADRIAN 🏛️ Join us as we uncover Hadrian’s legacy of strategy and renaissance, in our captivating odyssey of #DubiniFromAtoZ Roman emperor from A.D. 117 to A.D. 138, Hadrian’s legacy is one of strategic reform and cultural elevation. As one of Rome’s “Five Good Emperors,” he shifted focus from expansion to defence, epitomised by the construction of Hadrian’s Wall in Britain. His extensive travels and grand building projects improved infrastructure across the Empire. A lover of Greek culture, he elevated Athens and adorned it with majestic temples. With a strong military presence, he ordered strategic readiness and military training to be more rigorous, quelling revolts like Bar Kokhba’s in Judaea, consequently renaming the province Syria Palaestina. Hadrian’s rule reshaped the Empire, leaving a mark of strategic prowess and cultural refinement. 🏛️ #DubiniInspiration #Hadrian #RomanEmperor

🇬🇧 CONSTANTINE'S HEAD This sculpted head of the Emperor Constantine was discovered in 2005 during excavations not far from the most southern area of Trajan's Market, inside an ancient sewage pipe. The head had been sculpted out of an earlier piece which is no longer identifiable, as the only part of the original head that is just about recognizable, despite having been re-worked, is what is obviously a receding hairline and traces of a diadem, proving that the head portrayed someone of Imperial rank. #costantino #romeguides #passeggiatedomenicali #romeguidestours #museodeiforiimperiali #romanemperors #mercatiditraiano #sculptures #romanhistory #travel #traveladdict #instaart #travelphotography #curiosità #cityviews #visiteguidate #art #romamia #takeawalk #quantoseibellaroma #iloverome #visitroma #instarome #caputmundi #byfoot #likealocal #romacapitale #guidedtours #rome #romabella

One of Cancelleria Reliefs shows Vespasian’s adventus, a victorious return to Rome in 70 AD, after the Civil War of 68-69 AD (remember the Year of Four Emperors?). Vespasian is greeted by his son Domitian (who obviously took some time off from torturing flies). Behind Domitian is the bearded and mature Genius Senatus and the youthful Genius Populi Romani, holding a cornucopia. On the far left of the panel, Roma is seating on a throne, holding a spear. On her left there is a vestal attendant, on her right – Vestal Virgins. Vestals are followed by a group of lictors. Discovered in 1937-1939 under the Palazzo della Cancelleria in Rome. Panel has dowel holes and originally must have been attached to a building. #romanhistory #cancelleriareliefs #vespasiano #domitian #romanart #romanemperors #romansculpture #museivaticani🇮🇹 #rome #roma #emperorsofrome #adventus

"Stepping back in time to the grandeur of Ancient Rome, where every stone tells a story of power, innovation, and enduring legacy." Ancient Rome, founded in the 8th century BCE, began as a small settlement on the banks of the Tiber River in present-day Italy. Over the centuries, it grew into one of the most powerful and influential civilizations in history. Rome's rise to prominence was marked by conquests, expansion, and the establishment of a republic in 509 BCE. #AncientRome #TimelessWonders #HistoryUnveiled #RomanEmpire #RomanHistory #RomanArchitecture #RomanCulture #RomanArt #RomanRuins #RomanSites #RomanLegacy #HistoryBuff #RomanRepublic #RomanEmperors #RomanForum #Colosseum #Pantheon #RomanEngineering #RomanMythology #RomanLiterature #RomanLife #VisitRome

Happy birthday to Theodosius II born #OTD 10 April AD401. Fonte: Umberto Roberto, Diocleziano.

My favourite Classicist: Dame Mary Beard, DBE, FSA, FBA, FRSL is an English classicist specialising in Ancient Rome. She is a trustee of the British Museum and formerly held a personal professorship of classics at the University of Cambridge. It was not hard to became enthralled, with Professor Beard’s lectures and debates on Classism, specifically studies of Rome, its empire, cultural contributions in literature, art and military. Professor Beard is not a stodgy academic. She speaks to a broad audience, in language that demystifies the classical world. A refreshing approach, that allows a 21st century audience to relate to Roman daily life. Well known for media appearances, Beard is in a unique position to helped to dispel the image of crusty, museum exhibits behind glass. Breathes life into the annals of ancient worlds, replacing the staid and stereotype, with the grime, the grit, of humanity at its most basic. Beard articulates in intimate detail: a nobleman’s life, a farmer in his fields, the Pompeii prostitute, to a gladiator battling in the arena. Rich textures, a daily grind of lives lived in militaristic violence - centuries under the eagles of Pax Romana. Mary Beard in the media. Professor Beard has presented Pompeii: Life and Death in a Roman Town, Meet the Romans with Mary Beard, and Caligula with Mary Beard on BBC Two, has contributed to BBC Radio 4's A Point of View, and has appeared on the BBC's Question Time. #MaryBeard #DameMaryBeard #ProfessorMaryBeard #ClassicalStudies #Cambridge #CambridgeUniversity #CambridgeClassicalStudies #BritishMuseum #MaryBeardEnglishClassicist #Rome #AncientGreeks #RomanEmperors #MaryBeardInMedia #MaryBeardMediaPresence

🌟 Exploring History: Gordian III 🌟 Meet Gordian III, the young emperor who ascended to power during the tumultuous times of the Roman Empire. Born in 225 AD, Gordian III became emperor at just 13 years old, making him one of the youngest rulers in Roman history. Despite his youth, Gordian III faced numerous challenges during his reign, including military conflicts and political unrest. 🏛️ Under Gordian III’s rule, the Roman Empire saw both triumphs and tribulations. He led campaigns against the Sassanid Empire in the east and faced off against Germanic tribes in the north. Despite his efforts, Gordian III’s reign was marked by internal strife and instability. ⚔️ Tragically, Gordian III’s reign was cut short when he died in battle against the Sassanids in 244 AD at the young age of 19. His death marked the end of the Gordian dynasty and ushered in a new era of uncertainty for the Roman Empire. 😔 As we delve into the fascinating life of Gordian III, let’s remember his contributions and the challenges he faced as a young leader in a world of upheaval. ✨ #GordianIII #RomanEmpire #Emperor #History #AncientRome #RomanHistory #SassanidEmpire #MilitaryHistory #Leadership #Legacy #YouthfulRuler #HistoricalFigures #RomanEmperors #GordianDynasty #HistoricalLegacy #RomanCulture #AncientCivilization #EmpireBuilding #YouthInLeadership #RomanMilitary #PoliticalHistory #DynasticStruggles #IntriguingHistory #EmperorGordianIII #RomanLeaders #HistoricalJourney

🏛️ Vespasian, 69-79 AD 🏛️ Silver denarius minted in Rome 77-78 AD; IMP-XIX reverse with three legged modius containing seven corn ears; obverse CAESAR VESPASIANVS AVG with left facing laureate bust. I love the reverse of this coin! A modius was a Roman measure for dry goods, commonly grain. The equivalent measurement in modern terms is a peck, or quarter of a bushel. The depiction on this coin of a modius overflowing with ears of corn is effectively propaganda, showing the fertility of the empire under Vespasian and the bountiful produce available to feed the people. IMP-XIX stands for supreme commander (Imperator) for the 19th time. #MetalDetecting #MetalDetectingUK #MetalDetectingFind #MetalDetectingFinds #MetalDetectingFindUK #MetalDetectingFindsUK #Treasure #History #Roman #Coin #Coins #RomanHistory #RomanCoin #RomanCoins #Minelab #MinelabDetecting #MinelabEquinox #Equinox800 #Manticore #FindingHistory #Otho #RomanEmpire #Museum #BritishMuseum #Ancient #AncientHistory #Emperor #RomanEmperor #RomanEmperors #Rome

Herodian Tetrarchy in the Levant, c. 5 CE. A map illustrating the geopolitical situation in the Levant after Herod the Great's death (an ambitious ruler appointed as the King of Judea by the Roman Senate in 37 BCE ). The Herodian Tetrarchy, established by Herod the Great's will, divided the Levant into four distinct regions, each governed by one of his sons or relatives. This system aimed to maintain stability in the region following Herod's death. During the era of the Herodian Tetrarchy, the Roman Empire increased its territorial presence and influence within the Levant, marking a significant paradigm shift in regional power dynamics, ultimately resulting in the erosion of the Herodian dynasty and imposition of direct Roman rule. map by 🐒 simeon.netchev published @whencyclopedia
