Book 24 of 2024- Hooked by Emily McIntire 🍻 James helps run the seedy underbelly of Bloomsburg. He is the righthand man of the leader of a drug empire and runs a bar called the Jolly Roger. After the death of his parents and he was sent to live with an abusive uncle, his life became hard. He blames it all on one man Peter Michaels. When Peter’s daughter naïve Wendy shows up, he sees his chance to seek revenge on Peter. It also helps that he finds her very attractive. ⭐️⭐️⭐️.5/5💫 📚 I truly did enjoy this book more than I thought I would. I like the concept, a dark romance based on the villains of some of our favorite fairytales/classic stories. I loved how this wasn’t a straight retelling and more of just little nods to Peter Pan. I also really enjoyed that it was also completely realistic with no magical elements. The smut is smutting in this one, but it does have an instant love and instant forgiving that I do not love. I know that is kinda the name of the game in dark romance which is why it will never be my favorite genre. Others love this book and I 100% see why some people connect to the themes. 📖 Ein wenig Leben - Hanya Yanagihara Kaum ein anderes Buch ist mir in den letzten Jahren so häufig auf Bookstagram oder auch Booktok begegnet wie dieses. Und natürlich nicht einfach so, die Superlative schienen nahezu grenzenlos, genauso wie die Warnungen, die Videos von weinenden Lesern und die Liste der möglichen Trigger. Das dabei die Erwartungen ähnlich hoch ansteigen, ist dann nur wenig verwunderlich. Fast ebenso wenig wie die Tatsache, dass sie am Ende auch enttäuscht wurden. Aber bevor ich abschweife soll eines klargestellt sein: Hanya Yanagihara schreibt wirklich wunderschön, hätte sie dieses Sprachgenie aber nur für etwas anderes als diese 50 Shades of Beige Misery Porn genutzt wäre ich ihr und ihrem Stil auch vollends verfallen. Den was meine Erwartungen vor allem zerstört hat, ist schlichtweg die Tatsache, dass mir gefühlt ein ganz anderes Buch versprochen habe, als das was ich am Ende hatte: “Ein wenig Leben”, soll die Lebensgeschichte der 4(!) Freunde Willem, JD, Malcolm, Jude in New York erzählen, angefangen in ihren 20ern. Das tut es aber nicht, denn eigentlich beleuchtet es nur zwei der vier Freunde genauer, über mehr als 900 Seiten erfahre ich kaum etwas über JB oder Malcolm und was diese Menschen ausmacht, wer sie sind. Noch schlimmer - ich erfahre nicht einmal, warum sie Freunde sind und wie sie dazu geworden sind. Jetzt könnt ihr gern kommen und sagen: Ja, sie waren halt auf dem College zusammen und ich sage Bullshit. Selbstverständlich können in der Uni Freundschaften fürs Leben entstehen, aber nur weil man per Zufall in dieselbe Wohnheim WG gesteckt wurde, ist man nicht automatisch fürs Leben verbunden und gerade wenn es sich um so unterschiedliche Charaktere handelt, deren Leben scheinbar unterschiedlicher kaum sein könnten würde ich gern erfahren wie es zu dieser Konstellation gekommen ist. There were still some 𝐭𝐰𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐬 in this book that I wasn’t expecting, so I loved that it kept me thinking and going back and forth on my theories of what happened in regards to Alex’s and Ava’s family 𝐝𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐚. ✨Review✨ Twisted Games by Ana Huang ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Continuing on in the series, we have Bridget and Rhys who I grew to 𝐚𝐝𝐨𝐫𝐞! At first, I couldn’t get behind their connection but slowly I came around. I loved how Rhys only wanted what was best for Bridget, given her 𝐫𝐨𝐲𝐚𝐥 status and what she went through. I love the reality of their relationship, and how the things/problems they go through happen in 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥 life. Another few 𝐭𝐰𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐬 in this book that got me like 👀🫢 ! Overall, both books were fantastic and I thoroughly enjoyed them. I would absolutely recommend for anyone who loves love stories and some 𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐜𝐲 content ! How to Say Babylon by Safiya Sinclair ⭐️5/5⭐️ “How to Say Babylon is the stunning story of the author’s struggle to break free of her rigid Rastafarian upbringing, ruled by her father’s strict patriarchal views and repressive control of her childhood, to find her own voice as a woman and poet.“ This is one of those books that I will recommend to anyone and everyone for the foreseeable future. I am still in awe of this memoir and Sinclair’s experience growing up in a strict Rastafarian household. I am, however, more in awe of how she tells her story in a way that speaks deeply to so many women — those who have come before and after her — who have broken free from the chains of religious and patriarchal oppression. The vulnerability in this memoir is palpable. There is so much honesty in Sinclair’s words it feels like a privilege to be trusted with them as a reader. She captures her relationship with her father so poignantly, and there are honestly few words to describe how it feels to experience their dynamic from a readers perspective. There is a level of radical acceptance and rage that follows reading this memoir. There’s an unspoken feeling of bittersweet despair and unbreakable familial bond that drives so much of Sinclair’s childhood, and I admire her so much for sharing pieces of it with us.

I know I’ve said this before (more than once actually 😆), but second chance romance is one of those tropes that just gets me in the feels. I am always up for a well-written second chance romance. That being said, I was happy for the opportunity to read Just My Ex by @debgoodmanwrites which is a standalone romance in her Tate Brothers series with a twist on this trope. Quinn and Henry are a recently divorced couple who never really stopped loving each other, but when Henry’s past and job derailed their relationship, can they find a way to move forward together? I really loved how protective Henry was and how he learned from Quinn divorcing him. He wanted to be a better man and I loved how he showed up this time around. Quinn was a sweet character. She was brave and honest. The connection with her and Henry was undeniable and I cheered for them to find their way back to one another. I also thought the author did a great job with their dynamic and how them breaking allowed them to actually grow and then return to each other better and healthier as a couple. The cast of characters in this book and series are fun. I enjoyed getting to escape into this sweet story. ✨BOOK REVIEW✨ The Covenant of Water by Abraham Verghese 4.5 ⭐️/5 Meat & 3 REVIEW: The Covenant of Water is a beautifully written book, that follows several generations of a family in India, that is afflicted by a condition of water. The book follows two story lines, one of the family at Parambil and the other of Digby Kilgour, a doctor from Scotland who comes to be a surgeon in India. The biggest drawback of the book, is its length. It a lot of book to get through, and the story could have definitely been told in a much shorter book. But, other than that, it is such a great story. The author did such a great job weaving the characters lives together, and you get a good look into each character’s life. This is not a happy-go-lucky story and there is a lot of tragedy that unfolds over the approximately 80 year time span. Big Ammachi’s family faces so many struggles and loses over the years, but you also get to see how the family perseveres during these hardships. Digby also must deal with the tragedies in his life, that lead him to interactions with Big Ammachi’s family, that eventually come to a full circle at the end of the book. The book reminds me of one of my favorite Patrick Swayze movies, City of Joy. The story is not exactly the same, but definitely has some parallels. I am so glad I took the time to read it, and even though it is such a long book, I definitely think it is worth the read. ❤️📚

Sabendo do interesse de Avery no caso, e querendo prender o pai dela, o FBI manda um agente aposentado, Walt Jenkins (detetive encarregado do caso de Victoria na época) para se aproximar dela através das informações antigas. Temos muitos mistérios neste livro: a pretensa inocência de Victoria Ford, apesar das provas; o paradeiro do pai de Avery, e o que ela pretende fazer por ele em NY; e o passado de Walt Jenkins, desligado abruptamente do FBI e chamado de volta da aposentadoria. Não dá para dar muitos detalhes, para não entregar spoilers, mas dá para apresentar algumas coisas... Walt e Avery começam a trabalhar juntos para avaliar os dados do caso de Victoria, que é o principal do livro, e obviamente, nada simples como aparenta. Não fui surpreendida pelo plot, mas gostei do andamento da história - até o último capítulo e o epílogo. Não gostei do desfecho do mistério de Victoria, apesar de achar bem bolado, não me desceu. Gostei da parceria de Avery com Walt, e sim, fui enganada pelo plot da história dela. Imaginava outra coisa e o autor me pegou! No geral, eu gostei da leitura, sempre fico bem presa aos livros do Donlea. Acredito, porém, que ele poderia costurar melhor alguns detalhes de suas tramas e tornar alguns fatos mais verossímeis. J’ai lu ET PUIS LÀ FOUDRE de Sophie Rouvier Édition le livre de poche 252 pages Chiara et maxime sont sur le point d’annoncer leur séparation quand lors d’une fête improvise leur proche leur offre un séjour en amoureux à NY pour leur 15 ans de mariage… Pas le choix, il faut jouer la comédie du bonheur encore un peu et partir au bout du monde.., en (ex) amoureux. Un périple pour se rappeler, pour clôturer, pour tenter d’écrire ce dernier chapitre du couple et de la famille dignement… Au travers des chapitres court qui jonglent entre plusieurs espace temps, présent àNY, le passe dans les débuts de leur couple pour comprendre comment ils en sont arrivés à ce point de non retour, et le présent du côté de leur proche et de leurs enfants, nous assistons à la naissance de ce couple et à sa destruction. Mais le plus important et le plus dur et de tenter de réussir la séparation, au nom d’un amour jadis puissant, malgré les blessures, la colère, les non dits. Pa respect pour cet amour qu’il y a eu un jour, et parce que au milieu de tout ça, il y a des enfants et que par conséquent, une chose sera toujours éternelle, c’est la famille qu’ils ont formés et qui demeurera pour toujours. C’est intelligent et puissant comme récit. Ça fait réfléchir, et je me dis qu’il faut une énorme force de caractère pour réussir une séparation et un divorce. Il faut énormément de courage, de bienveillance et d humanisme pour ne pas détester l’autre au nom de l’amour que là on a eu un jour et de la famille que l’on construit. Mais pas facile tout ça. Agatha Christien teos The Adventure of the Egyptian tomb on yksi Hercule Poirotin seikkailuista. Kun joukko miehiä, jotka avasivat egyptiläisen faaraon Men-He-Rahin haudan kuolevat yksi toisensa jälkeen, huhut faaraon kirouksesta alkavat levitä. Poirotia pyydetään tutkimaan tapausta, ja hänen uskollinen toverinsa Hastings yllättyy, kun belgialaisetsivä tuntuu ottavan puheet yliluonnollisista voimista vakavasti. Mutta onko kyse todellisesta kirouksesta, vai jostain aivan muusta… Rakastan kaikkea muinaiseen Egyptiin liittyvää, ja pidän todella paljon siitä, että Agatha Christien monet tarinat sijoittuvat Egyptiin ja arkeologian pariin. Tämä oli hyvä kertomus, jossa sekä Poirot että Haistings olivat mahtavia hahmoja, ja pidin tarinan juonesta ja sen kekseliäästä loppuratkaisusta. Kuuntelemani äänikirjan luki David Suchet, joka näyttelee Hercule Poirotia Crime Timen tv-sarjassa, ja oli mahtavaa kuulla hänen käyttävän ”Hercule Poirot -ääntään” lukiessaan belgialaisetsivämme puheenvuoroja. Italie, années 30, Estée est une jeune danseuse italienne poussée par sa famille à tous les sacrifices pour percer et accéder à la consécration: danser à la Scala. Angleterre, de nos jours, Lily est une jeune femme passionnée par la viticulture qui reçoit une convocation chez le notaire pour la succession de sa grand-mère. Il semblerait que la mère de celle-ci ait accouché dans un foyer pour mères célibataires et ait laissé des indices pour trouver ses origines. Coïncidence parfaite, les indices conduisent en Italie où la jeune femme part justement effectuer un stage chez un vigneron. J'ai trouvé l'histoire dépaysante et intéressante notamment en ce qui concerne le vin, mais le contexte historique n'est pas très présent, et la relation entre Lily et le jeune homme qu'elle rencontre parait plutôt convenue. J'ai trouvé qu'il y avait énormément de similitudes avec la saga de Lucinda Riley (6 personnes à qui ont remet chacun une boite mystérieuse contenant un indice sur leurs origines, et une 7ème boîte qui ne trouve pas preneur…, une double temporalité, un destin de femme potentiellement grandiose, une histoire d'amour contrariée….) mais sans en égaler le niveau bien qu'elle reste intéressante et très agréable à lire.
