First project completed in 2024 | Bernal Heights Residence, SF A family home with dramatic downtown views and open plan living areas sits on a steep, multi-level site. Working closely with architects and interior designers @mediumplenty MFLA collaborated to create dynamic indoor/outdoor spaces by leveraging the small footprint and grading as inspiration for the concept. A faceted, sculptural wall made of limestone is accented by angular benches & stairs made from reclaimed San Francisco curbstones. Jacob Hashimoto is a contemporary American artist known for his sculptural wall and ceiling installations. Inspired by his Japanese heritage, these works are comprised of hundreds of small kites made from folded rice paper and supported by bamboo slivers. Hashimoto cites a variety of source material for his abstract compositions, which at times suggest the natural world or, at others, the digital landscape of video games. He explains that his aesthetic is to “take design as a marker of culture” and that his work takes design “from different areas that represent different periods, different parts of the world and weaves them together to create a kind of a tapestry of… it’s the life that I see around me. So [the sculptures] are kind of like cultural landscapes.” Born in 1973 in Greeley, CO, @jacobhashimotostudio attended the School of the Art Institute Chicago. He has exhibited with @maryboonegallery in New York and @rhonahoffmangallery in Chicago. His works are in the @tacomaartmuseum, the University of Chicago collections, and the University of Houston, among others. Hashimoto lives and works between Brooklyn, NY, and Verona, Italy.
This is what we’re up to at the moment. This is the foundation layer and a segment of midway through the moulding process for the portrait element of #jessieswall 3D sculptural wall project. Jessie James was a black teenage boy who was tragically murdered in 2006 in Moss Side Community Park. This memorial is being built not only to commemorate Jessie’s short life, but to shine a light on the beauty of a young life lost and to ask the question - why are children killing each other, and why are we, as a society, still allowing it to happen? This incredible community led project in partnership with @msmpowerhouse has been made possible with funding from @gtrmanchesterpolice and @one_manchester who appreciate the value of community and the creation of visual art as a powerful medium to bring young people and communities together and to provide creative opportunities. This has been a crazy journey for everyone involved, especially our Founder and CEO @mickydacks who conceived the idea during lockdown - when outdoor spaces became an essential part of life for pretty much everybody in the world. It’s been an epic journey, but we’re delighted that we’ve come this far and are ready to move to the next phase of the project. Next, some local young people from Moss Side will be creating the letters of Jessie’s first name and we’ll be digging up the ground to lay the lighting cables. We can’t wait to reveal the final sculpture and memorial wall, in October. #Allerton #Library, #Liverpool. A branch library was first planned in Allerton before WWII but it was delayed and wasn’t completed until 1965. It was originally supposed to be on the opposite corner of Mather Avenue and Rose Lane (now Tesco’s car park) but that site was taken by a school. The Liverpool Echo article from 22 June 1954 describes the benefits of the new site. The building was designed by the city architect Ronald Bradbury. The black and white photo is from 1971. The blue Mercedes Vario minibus in my photos was new in April 1990.

Sculptural wall by Antony Holloway (1928-2000), Primrose Drive, #Huyton. This is part of the 7000 square feet wall surrounding the Knowsley Heights towerblocks, built in 1961. Holloway’s sculptural wall on London Road, Manchester (designed with architect Harry Fairhurst) is Grade II listed. The listing calls it “a good and rare example of 1960s public art design that also incorporates a functional purpose as a sound buffer; reflecting Hollaway's philosophy of combining public art, form and function”. The Huyton wall seems to serve a similar purpose, blocking out traffic noise for the flats, but it isn’t listed.

Walls don't have to be confined to defining a garden's boundaries. Strategically placed, they can be used to create separate areas in a garden, frame a view or even create a sculptural feature. This beautiful slate wall built by @outdoor_options was incorporated into a garden we designed in Surrey to enclose an area with a hot tub. The garden continues behind so we included carefully positioned windows to create a view out to the trees, in turn, positioning the trees to reveal different aspects through each.
