My favorite seasonal ritual: the creation of a new How To Wear! Today’s How to Wear the Spring Equinox is more dainty than I typically dress, but this is what I wear IN MY HEART OK. You can find more than a decade’s worth of revisiting and revamping my vernal equinox ensembles on my blog, as well as literally hundreds of How To Wears inspired by everything from art to music to horror movies to tarot cards. SEASONAL RITUALS We can trace the roots of Christmas gift-giving all the way back to ancient Rome. Their equivalent tradition was to exchange sacred twigs and branches during the Pagan celebration Saturnalia, a winter feast honouring the sun god Ra. The Christmas presents of modern times may belong to a more consumerist culture, but they’re still a reminder of how we’re tied to seasonal rituals in ways that are deep and complex. The Roman twig and branch gifting ritual resonates with me all the more given that trugs were traditionally woven from the supple branches of local wood such as willow, chestnut, or ash. I carry the tradition of using locally sourced wood into my own contemporary trug-making practice today. Dreaming Dens… Each Winter I like to seek out a place close to the Earth where I can dream deeply in the darkness. Hollow trees, long barrows, gorse or holly bushes, caves or hand-built lodges all offer magical dens to curl up in, rest into and listen deeply. I wrap myself up warmly, lie upon a sheepskin and enter the silence, allowing my mind and body to settle as I listen to what stirs in the darkness. From this quiet place I begin to dream - allowing images to arise and visions to be born. These flow from personal wishes for my next growth cycle, expanding to my community and then outwards to envision the world I long for. I imagine I am the seed, incubating in the dark earth, growing roots and gathering strength to be born anew. Persephone gets a bad rap. She isn’t some poor idiot who can’t think for herself or make her own decisions; she is smart AF. First of all, I think she is totally hot for the tall, enchanting Hades; he is a powerful king who worships her after all. I’m also fairly certain that she eats the pomegranate on purpose; she wants to see the Underworld with new eyes, to understand the realm of spirits and the afterlife. And who wouldn’t want to be a queen and have sovereignty of their own domain? Oftentimes, this myth is equated with this time of year, Autumn, because this is when we turn toward the dark. We are leaving the sunny active days of summer behind and transitioning into a time of more stillness and solitude. Persephone understands transition more than anyone. She lives between two worlds, always crossing two realms of being, the light and fullness of above and the dark and mystery of below. Just as during this time of year, we are transitioning between the light and darkness. Persephone can be a model for us on how to do it gracefully. Though much of Persephone’s tale ends with the outcome of her future decided for her by her parents, Persephone lives on as a great queen. She brings with her the knowledge of both worlds, above and below, life and death, and everything in between. She’s seen it all and uses this to seed compassion and diplomacy in her dominion. As summer turns to autumn, I reflect upon what I’ve harvested — both literally and figuratively — since spring. Not only the seeds and intentions I planted on purpose, but the fruits that appeared unexpectedly. It can be easy to fixate on what didn’t happen and miss what did.... And leaves begin to fall from deciduous trees, I reflect on what my body also needs to release As an herbalist, the turn of seasons are times to rearrange my apothecary. In September, I prepare my body for cooler, darker days when I am more apt to catch a cold or feel run down. I make Fire Cider and continue to throw wildcrafted, immunomodulating mushrooms in soups, stews and infusions along with immune-enhancing roots like Astragalus. I decant tinctures like St. John’s Wort that have been brewing since summer and make nourishing infusions with roots like burdock and flowers, leaves and berries of hawthorn. Just because it is equinox and one day is equal in light and dark does not mean that suddenly it feels like fall or spring. These times of transition when seasons are changing can sometimes be a struggle because if you are sensitive, you feel the in-between, the liminal state of shifting. During this time, I feel as if I have one foot in summer and one foot in fall. It’s almost like a sense of floating. Where do I land? To help me with these transition times, I love to honor the seasonal shifts with ritual. This is a rite of passage for a seasonal transition, the rites of autumn (or spring). Back in the Winter, Szara of @earthgladesales played the part of the Sun in one of our rituals. The picture shows her headdress and this is what she wrote about the event: "For Imbolc 2023 I was invited to be the Sun for the Norwich Pagan Moot ritual in Mousehold Heath. I was honoured to say the least. I have taken part in many rituals but often a non speaking supporting role of a main character. For this ritual for some unknown reason I had no nerves whatsoever ever, but I was excited and full of adrenaline. I based my headdress on an image of Toyah Wilcox from the first album I ever bought. I admired her so much and have had the pleasure of meeting her since. She was my first Goddess. I had no pre planned words, I went with my feelings and instinct when I entered the circle when called. At the end, when socialising, I was gifted a piece of sea glass by a young girl who had been brought by her dad as she is keen to start her journey. I promised I would wear this at the next public ritual and I have commissioned for it to be bound in silver to keep forever. I answered her questions and her dads too. In some seasons there is food literally falling off the trees. A lesser known food but one that's in abundance on roadsides and down back lanes are hawthorn berries. They are small but hang in clusters so are easy to pick, they're tart but worth a little work they come up a treat. Hawthorn Berry Sauce 500g of hawthorn berries 300ml of cider vinegar (see page xx 300ml of water 170g of sugar 1/2 tsp salt ½ tsp freshly crushed black pepper -After foraging your hawthorn berry stash wash them well, ensuring all the stalks and leaves stalks are removed. Pop in a pan with the water and vinegar, bring to the boil. Slow heat to a simmer for about 30 minutes or until the skins of the berries begin to burst -Remove from heat and pass through a sieve to remove any stones and skin -Transfer the thick liquid to a clean pan, add sugar and simmer on low heat stirring until sugar is dissolved. -Bring to the boil and simmer for 5-10 more minutes, until reduced and syrup-like. -Season to taste then transfer to sterilised bottles. It will keep if properly sealed for up to a year.

Lughnasadh, celebrated Feb 2, 2023 is the first or early harvest celebration that marks the midpoint between Summer Solstice and the approaching Autumn Equinox. It is the threshing of golden grains, the weaning of calves, and the ripening of the apples and grapes - the first fruits of the summer cycle. Its also the doorway to the EARTH element which you will witness slowly growing in strength as FIRE wanes; gathering, increasing in density, and acquiescing to EARTH in the form of compost and ash. On December 21, 2022, we welcome the Winter Solstice — the longest Night of the Year in the northern hemisphere where we honor the dark so we can be born again come the Spring. We come from darkness and to her, we shall return. As we close 2022, I invite you to ask yourself: How are you tending to your soul? What regulates you and stabilizes your energy? Winter is the season when nature is guiding us into deep, restorative rest. Embrace this time of rest and depth while feeding the forces of light and renewal to bring you into the new year. Root yourself in practices to slow down to dream, meditate, heal the shadow, ritual medicine, self explorations of our soul's depths, and heart prayers. By traveling into the invisible world within, we can be enriched in mystery, healing, and hope. ✨❄️ And to honor the Solstice, I’m excited to share that for the next 5 days, I will be hosting a 5 day Winter Solstice Challenge. ❄️✨ My invitation and challenge for you is to carve out 30 minutes for you to be with you.
