🐚 HISTORY OF FILIPINIANA 🐚 We touched on the men’s barong and we can’t forget about the FILIPINIANA - a traditional dress that is known for it’s dynamic butterfly sleeves, plain blouse (baro or camisa), long skirt (saya), and a pañuelo (a square of cloth used as a head covering or worn as a scarf around the neck) worn over the shoulders. The Filipino’s fascination with terno stemmed from the influence of the Spanish colonial period; an era that highlighted Christian ethics which demanded women be modest at all times 🗡️ The “terno” emerged after centuries of evolution incorporating modern design. 🍃 HISTORY OF THE BARONG TAGALOG 🍃 With so much to celebrate this month we are here to highlight Filipino formalwear - the barong is a lightweight, stunning garment with an incredibly resilient history rooted in resistance, craftsmanship and elegance. More than four centuries ago, wearers of the first barong trace back to the pre-colonial era. The root word of barong is the Tagalog word “baro”, meaning “outfit” or “clothing”. Made from natural fibers like abaca, pina, or jusi, the barong persisted as a popular choice among Filipino men 🎩⚡️ Filipino culture + way of life is founded on resistance with the barong originating from the Spanish colonial rule when Filipinos were forced to wear see-through clothing to deter them from hiding weapons due to fear of retaliation. Edward Moore, a 32-year-old sailor, was discovered, near freezing and living in a tattered tent on the shore near current day Seattle in 1854. At the time, Washington was still a territory and Seattle was a misty settlement of log cabins and wood-framed homes at the edge of the known world. “He’d been living in his makeshift tent for months, living off raw shellfish he foraged and being cared for after a fashion by the Coast Salish people who lived nearby,” explained Josephine Ensign, a University of Washington nursing professor, and the author of “Skid Road,” which documents the history of homelessness in Seattle. “He most likely had PTSD from a really, really bad shipwreck and maybe also potentially some traumas from his childhood back in Massachusetts,” Ensign said. “It does seem like he had schizophrenia or some type of psychosis.” After having several of his frost-bitten toes amputated with an axe, Moore was taken to a doctor at Fort Steilacoom, which would later become Western State Hospital. But when the bill came due for Moore’s care, Washington lawmakers balked. They didn’t want to set a precedent that would require the territory to care for the growing number of poor and ill sailors who were ending up on its rugged shores. They decided Moore’s care was the responsibility of the county, not the territory, and shipped him back to Seattle by canoe. After he returned, Seattleites decided the best thing to do was to send Moore back to Massachusetts. “Townspeople took a collection to buy him a new pair of clothes, paid a ship’s captain, and shipped him off,” Ensign said. During the expectation part of our consultation, I told she would be lighter but also darker than when she came in. ⠀ What does this mean? She came in with 8 months of grown out highlights that were untoned and brassy. She wanted them neutralized. Neutralizing will appear darker as you are adding cooler tones to cancel out the brassy ones BUT she would also feel lighter because we were touching up the very dark grow out at the top of her head. An Anacortes elementary school teacher was found stabbed to death in her home. Police say her 41-year-old husband is missing along with their vehicle and is a suspect in her death. Later the vehicle was found near Deception Pass Bridge and reports of a body floating in the water prompted a search but nothing turned up. Their 3 children were reported safe with with family members.
