It's often the case that plants know best where they want to be. Look at this splendid white honesty. It grew itself from a bunch of dried seed pods (you know them, the shiny, papery, moon-like oval things) I deliberately left on this empty large pot . It's so much bigger & better than any plant I've ever grow from seed. In fact, it's one of those that a) is best fro fresh collected seed but b) will only germinate when you lose patience and chuck the seed tray contents away . In the second picture you can see the seed pod starting to form. These are going to be perfect for a green and white wedding in May. Another dry area has been located ... planted out blue cornflowers, white cornflowers, white corncockle, pink corncockle and some white umbellifers, daucus and orlaya (think posh cow parsley type things). Covered with fine mesh to keep those munching critters off . In the polytunnel (1st pic) I've spread a bag of waste seed compost saved from the pricking out/potting on process to create a nice bed for two types of ornamental cress . And another few trays of seeds sown. Spent some time working in the patch and brought in a bouquet of daffs. This vase by @cageandco.ceramics is perfect. You can get a pretty nice shape to a bouquet without mechanics. Yesterday’s magnolia branch arrangement after adding in some hellebores. I don’t know which I like better. It felt so good to create again! It’s funny, I’ve been walking around this winter feeling completely burnt out by farming and life. Ready for the spring but also having zero motivation to start seeds or do much of anything. I was starting to wonder if I’d remember how to create. It was such a moment of joy putting this one together. I sure have missed arranging.

Whew! I finished digging AND dividing my dahlias today! I’ve never divided in the fall. I usually just store them in clumps, but then spring gets hectic and many don’t get divided. I end up planting the clump so my plant stock never really increases. This year, since it was not miserable outside, I went ahead and divided now. I’m so happy with this decision! This is just two stems from a Koko Loko rose I planted last year. This spring I planted 3 more…plus another 14 other roses. I can’t wait to see next year but the year after will be even better as most roses and perennials take a good 3 years to establish and be their best selves. The Queen Lime Red zinnia is the perfect compliment to these pink and apricot lisianthus! This was one of the summer subscriptions that went out yesterday. I’m trying to get the field in a state that I feel comfortable having a workshop. I always worry that people won’t see the flowers for the weeds, but it’s almost impossible to not have a few! Two weeks ago I was contacted by a florist from Indy about providing some flowers for a wedding this weekend. I have purposely steered clear of weddings because of how specific the flower requests are. Most of my work is “farmer’s choice”—you get the best of what’s blooming that day. But I decided to give it a shot. I was sick to my stomach the whole two weeks Cried a few times too. But yesterday, my flowers went on their way to Indy to be a part of someone’s special day. Not everything went perfectly. A few things she requested weren’t ready or were past their prime, but the local flower community is amazing. The florist, @vincentblooming, was the absolute sweetest to work with. And @budsandbloomsfarm saved me with some extra snapdragons when most of mine blew open over the weekend. Overall though, I’m just really proud of taking on something that scared me and providing some beautiful local flowers. #thefarmonthehillflowers

Wow! It's been a busy few days in the garden 🌱🌼 Did you get lots done too? I finally got my sweet peas in the ground. Just look at those lovely roots in the root trainer pots. If you sowed these seeds with me back in March then yours should be ready to go in the ground too. I also got the rabbit fencing put up around the raised beds, dug up and moved a couple of shrubs, transplanted more seedlings and have been making paper pots for the seedlings in my seedling sale. Date still to be decided but I'm working on getting everything listed on my order form. May is such a busy month in the garden but I love getting out there and finally getting my hands dirty. I have two sunflower-specific weddings this summer so I thought I'd better get the first batch going. Sown in @fertilefibre peat free seed compost last Wednesday and popping up already . There are a handful of large headed varieties but the majority are the smaller flowered, branching types in various bright and pale yellows, plus a couple of reds . As you might suspect, the branching sunflowers give multiple flowers over their life rather than being a one-and-done. Here we see the single surviving stem of stock that somehow managed to escape being eaten to uselessness by a rabbit/pheasant in the polytunnel . Visible in the background is the fine mesh now protecting some other precious crops that are particularly attractive to rabbits/pheasants . Takeaway advice for you: cover everything! All the time and in all areas! I always do outside until the plants are big enough to be less tasty. The job I'm doing in the photo is one of my favourites - pricking out seedlings 🌱☺️ It reminds me of my childhood spent sitting in my grandfather's greenhouse helping him with his tomato seedlings. I probably crushed a few 🥹 but he never seemed to mind as there were always plenty of extras! These are Helipterum roseum or paper daisy seedlings.
