Creating work is one thing; listing it is nothing short of heroic! I don’t know any makers who love this bit, but I guess there could be… These three collections - BLUE BOWL, QUIET THOUGHTS and GLASSHOUSE POTS - are all from the same printmaking session so the colours and motifs repeat across the images. I loved every minute of creating them, and each image is a crop of an original piece. I let them be for a few months before looking through the whole messy pile and evaluating how they could be used. Staring at piles of prints for several days is all part of the process: it feels frustrating at the time and the inner critic sighs loudly and often. But then genius strikes and one small win leads to another, and a small collection forms! Not sure what to do with the growing pile of original pieces but the cards are now available in the shop. A follow-up to the 5pm post. Here we have a primarily bluegrass lawn. You can see the little seedheads the bluegrass produces. We get a lot of calls from customers thinking these are weeds in the lawn. This is actually a very good sign that the bluegrass is thriving and healthy. Background on this area in the photo: This was a totally bare section of the lawn that gets very wet and the soil was compacted and cracked. This is a special bluegrass mixture called poa supina that grows in very dense shade and has a spreading habit. It took about 6-7 years for this to fill in to this point but wow, what a difference it made! The dance of decay has begun...seedheads in all their glorious array of earthy colours, from burnished bronze and charcoal black, to the odd touch of shimmery silver and green. I love this time of year as the colours fade and the softer perennials start to collapse, their spent stems and leaves bending and falling to the ground, as if they know that their last job is to return to the earth, their nutrients and carbon-rich stems feeding the soil so they may do it all again next summer. Ann Bowen teaches techniques of abstract lettering and embossing with gilded enhancement, while Yuki Aruga offers an introduction to verre églomisé. If someone showed me these strange little structures out of context, I don't think I'd ever guess what they are. I'd probably go with especially pretentious hats for important fairy folk or alien medical implements (because I am a large child). They are, however, the seed heads of the marsh marigold, Caltha palustris, left behind in all their spikey star-like glory when those bright yellow petals and anthers fall away. What a great example of the intricacy, beauty, and madness of nature. I am constantly amazed by the lifecycles of plants and animals and the stages of life they go through. . another submission I made to @cutmeupmagazine issue 13 ‘suspended’ Collaged photograph with material from Cut Me Up and lifestyle magazines. 8.5 x 11.5 “ Responding to the open call by Katie Blake to explore the Japanese concept of Ma, I used sections of issue 12 artworks by Angela Reimer and Melanie Garcia alongside an image of cord from an interior magazine. I found a photo of some plants by my (late) father in law which he had printed and then scanned to create a drop shadow. Gaps, edges, layers, shadows, rhythm, cord, flesh and folds. Cut Me Up is a participatory magazine of visual call and response founded by Andrea Burgay. Each issue presents a curated selection of original collage images that will become raw material for reader-artists to respond by cutting, reconfiguring, and transforming them into new artworks, in response to curatorial calls addressing contemporary issues. The helmeted honey eater is Victoria’s bird emblem and is only found in Victoria. It is critically endangered. Currently ( and in the past), he is creating a home with a green roof which provides birds a safe place, to nest and feed, away from many predators. I painted the feather of another Australian native bird, the tawny frog mouth, to highlight the need to protect their home, canopy trees. Their beautiful feathers resemble the motley bark of trees. Talk about indulging myself: I’ve had the best week messing about on the laptop using scans of original screen prints and collages to make cards! No messy ink, limitless options, joyful cropping…I can’t help it, I love it. I’ve had weeks of staying away from digital creativity but it was lovely to relax into something so familiar. And those beautiful blues didn’t need any messing with at all - they are the colours of the original artwork. After so much brown, wet weather, the blues and greens feel like a big sigh of relief. I know I haven’t posted in a while but I’ve still enjoyed keeping up with you all. Life has been fun and busy and I’ve stepped out of my comfort zone a few times, and that always leads somewhere - if only to the realisation that it isn’t really for me!! A Sunday selection of bespoke shades I made for some lovely local customers. I enjoyed working with them to get exactly what they wanted - including a new way of getting a diffuser into the top of a duplex shade (to hide it sitting on the lamp carrier.) This first picture is a great new fabric that’s very much like Christopher Farr Carnival but without the £155 a metre price tag! Such a find! I hope you all like them as much as they did.
