Happy Friday from Figaro! 🐈⬛ You ever read a book and think “damn, time to make that my entire personality”? 🤌🏼 Even though I read mainly fantasy, I get the occasional YA contemporary that just hits right, and those have included Social Queue by Kay Kerr, Foolish Hearts by Emma Mills, Radio Silence by Alice Oseman, and This Is Shyness by Leanne Hall. 🥰 This is also a reminder that this month is Autism Awareness Month and I’ll be making a proper post next week about it. To be honest, what we need is not so much awareness, but more representation and acceptance. The female MC of Social Queue is autistic and a delightful reminder that autism is different for everyone. Tamora’s books were way ahead of the game in terms of multi-faceted and flawed female characters, and the Trickster duology is no different. What’s a book you’ve read where the consequences of the character(s)’s actions were well explored? Because holy heck were the consequences explored in A Psalm of Storms and Silence! This is less a book review and more me throwing words into this post and hoping they stick (which, really is what all my other reviews are anyway). 😅 This post will be no-spoiler territory, but Rosanne Brown REALLY upped the ante in her sequel. Not only were the consequences of Karina and Malik’s actions in the first book well fleshed out, but she also explored the ripple effect of their subsequent choices made in the second book without justifying them or covering them up. Fair warning too, there are some serious trigger warnings for both books but especially the second (and Roseanne has them listed in her title page which is a wonderful thing) and they include grooming, torture, xenophobia, emotional and physical abuse, mental illness (including anxiety, intrusive thoughts, self-harm and suicide ideation). A huge theme of these books is what people will do when they are scared and feel they have no choice, which really opens up these characters’ rationales in the story. All these characters are so flawed and there are truly no real heroes in this duology, only heroic actions. I really hope Rosanne writes more in this world; it’s such a beautiful tapestry of world-building and West African folklore, PLUS I feel like the ending is pretty open for more stories! 🙏🏼 [ID: a flat lay on a white sheet. Oldest TBR Challenge 📚🙈 What book(s) have the dubious honour of sitting in your TBR pile the longest? Parts one and two of Oathbringer, the third book in the Stormlight Archive by Brandon Sanderson, have sat in my TBR pile since they were published in 2017! I was really intimidated to pick them up for a long time because it’d been a while since I’d read the first two books and the level of world-building and cast of characters that I needed to remember was vast. I was an avid reader of all of Emily Rodda’s stories in primary school and there is probably not one Australian person born in the 90s who is not at least familiar with the Deltora Quest series, even if they hadn’t read it! Rowan of Rin is her lesser known and shorter series, but it has a special place in my heart. The character development of Rowan from shy, apprehensive herding boy to a confident and gentle young man who’d lay down his life to save his village is beautifully done. Even though it’s a middle-grade series, the stakes are high and the monsters genuinely terrifying (as you can see from the cover!). Not to mention the cast of varied and eccentric side characters. This was one of the first books I borrowed from the adult fantasy section from my local library (I remember creeping in like a mouse expecting to be shooed out!). I was probably a little too young when I first read this (it covers some pretty heavy topics), but I still adored it and borrowed it multiple times to re-read it until I found this battered copy secondhand. ♥️ The story is a historical fantasy published in 1999 and is a Celtic re-telling of The Six Swans. Are there any books you’ve read that you love some aspects of the writing but struggle with others? The Deadly Education books seem to be incredibly polarising. On one hand I love the plot; the premise is absolutely incredible with adolescent wizards having to go through hellish, self-regulated wizarding school called the Scholomance because it’s still safer than the outside world, which is plagued by creatures called maleficaria, or “mals” that love devouring young wizards. Unfortunately there just happen to be less chance of succumbing to a mal in the Scholomance… 😅👹 However, I did struggle with the meandering first-person narration by El, the main protagonist. I read the first book back in March (which ends on a killer cliff-hanger), and I was still keen enough for The Last Graduate. But once again, it took me 50-80 pages to get back into the rambling inner monologue of our snarky, prickly heroine. After that, it was totally worth it – we get more plot twists, better character depth to the love interest, interesting magic systems and excellent 👏🏼 female 👏🏼 friendships 👏🏼! Mind you, I can’t be too critical of El’s circuitous inner monologue and the level of segues because when I talk to people, I’m just as bad! 😅 And FYI, The Last Graduate ends on a cliff-hanger that obliterates the first book’s cliff-hanger! 🙈😳🤯 [ID: a flat lay of copies of A Deadly Education and The Last Graduate lying next to an unlit candle and almost empty teacup and saucer. Do you ever read any self-help books? ‼️CW: mental health, anxiety, depression, mention of suicide Something a bit different (and more serious) today from my usual steady stream of mostly fantasy book posts! I admit I used to have a very contemptuous attitude towards self-help books. This is going back to when I was in my mid-to-late teens and it’s very interesting how insidious stigma around mental illness is. I would consider my immediate family to be very supportive and kind but even off-hand comments and judgments from friends and extended family really do stick in your psyche and change how you view people who have depression, anxiety and other forms of mental illness. Admittedly, most of my education on mental well-being came through a professional skills subject while I was studying to be a vet. The veterinary industry is unfortunately a profession that is at a higher risk for burn-out, compassion fatigue, anxiety, depression and suicide. So, before I started working, I started cracking open a collection of self-help books. What’s a book series advertised as middle grade or YA that you feel doesn’t quite fit into the genre? I’ve always felt that the His Dark Materials trilogy is definitely not a children’s book with the complexity of the themes it explores. That said, in some ways it’s like a Disney film; you understand more about it when revisiting it as an adult (mainly the adult jokes hidden in most Disney films!). 😉 The Mirror Visitor quartet is also one of those series that slips around genres and explores some complex social themes. I remember picking up the first book from the middle grade section in Waterstones (oh to go to London again!), knowing very little about the plot. Admittedly, I spent a lot of time being bamboozled by the plot and the world the characters inhabit but by the end of the first book and the beginning of the second book, I was thoroughly smitten by the series. I finished the final book earlier this month (no spoilers here, don’t worry!) and while I was a little disappointed in some ways about how the story finally panned out, the scenes between Thorn and Ophelia gave me life and they will forever live rent-free in my mind! 🥰🤌🏼 Here’s the synopsis of the first book, A Winter’s Promise: Plain-spoken, headstrong Ophelia cares little about appearances. Her ability to read the past of objects is unmatched in all of Anima and, what's more, she possesses the ability to travel through mirrors, a skill passed down to her from previous generations. What’s a book you’re read recently that was translated from another language? I read Before the Coffee Gets Cold last month after seeing it do the rounds on social media recently (and I mean, with that cover I’m also guilty of using it as aesthetic fodder for my own account! 😅). While it did have some meaningful themes about love, regrets and things left unsaid or undone, I unfortunately didn’t enjoy the stilted dialogue and descriptions. Admittedly, the book was written by a playwright, and thus, it reads exactly like a playscript; lots of telling not showing. That said, even though the entire book takes place in a Japanese café, you feel immersed in the culture and social commentary at the time. 🇯🇵 ☕️ Synopsis: In a small back alley in Tokyo, there is a café which has been serving carefully brewed coffee for more than one hundred years. But this coffee shop offers its customers a unique experience: the chance to travel back in time. But the journey into the past does not come without risks: customers must sit in a particular seat, they cannot leave the café, and finally, they must return to the present before the coffee gets cold . . . Which authors have you discovered this year that are now insta-buy authors? ✨ I bought The Merciful Crow purely on a whim and boy I wasn’t disappointed. There are so many things to love about this duology; the complex magic system, the flawless world-building, the on-point humour. But the biggest thing I loved was the writing of the main female character. Fie is an unapologetically angry girl; angry with those that would harm her family and angry with the unfair system that demonises her caste despite its necessity to their society. It may be a small thing, but she is also not described as an attractive female protagonist which is incredibly underrated and refreshing! 👏🏼 Other authors apart from Margaret Owen that are on my “must-buy-all-the-books” list are: Alix E. Harrow, Emma Mills, Becky Chambers, Helen Hoang, Caroline O’Donoghue, Shelley Parker-Chan and Hafsah Faizel. Are there any trilogies that you think suffered from “second book syndrome”? I have to personally thank @charliesbookrecs for convincing me to finish the Serpent & Dove books. I really enjoyed the first book; the setting, the romance, the unique magic and the use of all my favourite YA tropes! The second book, however, left me confused and disconnected from the story and the characters (and I know I wasn’t alone in this feeling…). 😢I was considering giving up on the series; after all there are so many other books that need to be read! But after seeing Charlie’s review, I decided to pick up the third book (on a grocery run of all things). Gods & Monsters really came through with the goods! The pacing was bang on track, I fell in love with the characters all over again and the story made sense! 👏🏼💕 And yes, I did specifically obtain some scrolls for this photo. What’s your most memorable second-hand bookshop experience? 📚📚 One of my best memories was a barn turned second-hand bookshop in rural Victoria; it had two storeys and everything! One of the worst was a tiny shop where the elderly male owner kept talking to me and I was too polite to excuse myself and run away; I got stuck for almost 2 hours (and with no books to show for my troubles!)! 😣😭 The books pictured are some of my favourite books I bought second-hand. Does anyone notice that they tend to gravitate to a specific type of writing in books? Last month I read The Ten Thousand Doors of January and The Once and Future Witches (finally! They’ve been sitting in my TBR cart since January…) and Alix E. Harrow is now one of my new insta-buy authors. Her writing reminds me a lot of one of my other favourite authors, Laini Taylor; they have that same rich prose, vivid imagery, and social commentary on the faults of humans. They’re very rewarding books for someone who enjoys a slow-paced fantasy (if you also enjoyed Addie LaRue, you’ll definitely enjoy these authors too!). Do you re-read your books? If so, are there any particular ones that you’ve re-read dozens of times? North Child by Edith Pattou is one of those books that I remember pulling off my shelf and re-reading every year from childhood to my teens. It’s a retelling of the Norwegian fairy-tale “East of the Sun, West of the Moon” that always truly captivates me. Earlier in the year I discovered that not only had they re-published North Child with a new cover (designed by Charlie Bowater no less!), but Edith had written a sequel called West! While I love the new books, I think I’ll always keep and treasure my original, battered copy of North Child. Please tell me someone else was as obsessed with this book in their tweens as much as I was! 🥰✨ Here’s the synopsis of the first book: Rose has always longed for adventure, so when an enormous white bear appears one evening and makes her a mysterious offer, she accepts. In exchange for health and prosperity for her ailing family, she must live with the white bear in a distant castle. But Rose soon realizes that all isn't as it seems. As she tries to settle into her new life, she makes a devastating mistake. Now she must choose: return to her safe and loving family or go on a dangerous quest to fix what she has broken--and perhaps lose her heart along the way. P.S. What has been your experience with classic books? A lot of classic novels seem to be incredibly polarising; either you love them or hate them. Although, I still have my great-grandmother’s copies of the Brontë sisters’ books, but I won’t be reading Wuthering Heights any time soon again. It was a Struggle and I wanted to throw most of the characters into a garbage fire. 🔥On the other hand, I read another classic and thought to myself: “I can see why THIS is considered a classic!”. Holiday TBR! 📚 How often do you have an organised TBR? To be quite honest, I just have my general TBR pile where I pick my next book depending on how I feel. What’s your best (or rather, worst!) book lending disaster story? I once lent a book to one of my mother’s friends and not only did she lose it, but she tried to make it up to me by buying me the movie tie-in copy (I know the intentions were good, but my book snobbery just couldn’t deal with this!).
