Trickster's Choice and Trickster's Queen follows Aly, the daughter of Alanna and George Cooper, as her life suddenly changes after being abducted by pirates. As Aly takes on a wager with the local Trickster god, she must decide what path in life she is going to take. Aly's story is slightly more mature than the previous series as Pierce tackles tough problems such as slavery and conquerors. Although Aly isn't in Tortall for most of the book, we do still get to see all of our favorite characters from past books. 8 🐦⬛out of 10 #TrickstersChoice and #TrickstersQueen gathered into one book, #Trickster by #TamoraPierce A good follow-up to #TrickstersChoice, in this book our hero Aly needs to keep the Balitang family safe using her burgeoning spy network. My favourite character from the last book, crow-turned-man Nawat, is off somewhere else for most of the book, which is disappointing, but his role of commenting on the humans actions from a non human perspective is taken this time by Darklings, a group of sentient black blobs that listen to everything and report back to Aly. I'm glad there's still that outside perspective, but I miss the crow-ness of Nawat. When he does finally come back,he's now a man that can turn into a crow,rather than a crow that is man shaped,and he's lost all the charmingness that being a crow and having a crow's perspective had bought this character. Although Pierce is looking to show the effects of colonisation from the native people's perspective, the use of blood percentages makes me uncomfortable. Characters are described as 'raka (the brown native people) full bloods and part bloods, and the luarin (the white colonisers) also described as that. But again, its a white lady writing in the early 2000s and apart from the blood percentage, she handles the colonised raka fairly sympatheticly. But still, a good book by a good author. But the cover gets no points. $8 from a second hand book shop. ⭐️REVIEW⭐️ TRICKSTER’S CHOICE and TRICKSTER’S QUEEN by Tamora Pierce As a teenager, I read every single one of Tamora Pierce’s books, over and over and over again. I think it was the Alanna series that really cemented me into a reader in my early teens. I haven’t reread this series, the follow up to the Alanna books, since I was a teenager but GOSH what a joy it was revisiting this dear old favourite. There’s something so wonderful about the nostalgia of a series that was so instrumental in forming my reading experience. I loved it then, and I loved it now. This duology is set in the fictional Copper Isles, which were once ruled by the native Raka, a dark skinned tribal people. When the Copper Isles were colonised by the white skinned Luarin, the Raka were largely enslaved or had to pay to live on Luarin land, and often subjected to the cruelty of their Luarin overlords. Years later, this story follows Aly, a young spymaster in training, as she becomes entangled in an uprising to overthrow the Luarin and reclaim the Isles for the Raka people. It was particularly affecting reading this one late last year amid various international conflicts. It really struck me how, in fiction, we are almost always given the point of view of the oppressed, and we root for them and cheer them on and fully believe in their quest for freedom from oppression. In real life, it seems, this is not always the case. While this story is of course constrained by the fact that it is fiction, and primarily for teens, I liked that it did explore the aftermath of a rebellion, emphasising that not all of the “bad guys” are bad, and that peace can only be achieved when both sides agree to end the violence. It was an engaging (though again: fictional) look at a colonised people and their struggle for freedom. 2 things to take away from this review: 1) I highly recommend revisiting an old fave every now and then and 2) reading is ALWAYS political. There’s nothing like a good book, and good espresso. I used to find the Trickster’s Duet the least enthralling of Tamora Pierce’s books, but as I get older I find myself identifying with the heroine more. She’s older than most protagonists Pierce writes, which is probably the reason it’s taken a few rereads to enjoy her perspective.

It’s political intrigue and epic storytelling at its finest. It also sets the stage really well for big events that take place in the concluding book that follows. . Aly, the main character, is clever and strong, just like her iconic parents. She’s constantly surprising everyone, proving useful and trustworthy. . I also love the character referenced in the title, Kyprioth, who is the trickster god of thievery and wages overseeing the Copper Isles (the setting). He’s very charismatic and wily, but does genuinely care for his raka people, the crows, and all else in his domain. . Another character I adore is Nawat, a crow who turns human so he can communicate with Ally and where my love of crow shifters began. . I'm feeling nostalgic today, friends. Here's another absolute favorite series of mine from when I was growing up. I didn't wind up reading the Alanna books but I was captivated by Aly. She was witty and confident in her strengths and clever in so many ways. Watching her code switch to fit in for her undercover mission, seeing her talk battle tactics and next steps with her allies, and navigating all the intrigue to pull off the big plan was so thrilling. Her wholesome and bumbling romance with our favorite crow man was exactly the kind of sweet, charming love story I enjoyed at the time. One you so rarely see, especially nowadays. But even then, there was a lot of toxic romance stuff in teen and YA books. Which made this all the more precious to me. These are the books I'll read to my future children. Stories of clever girls who believed in their cause and made it happen. Stories of friendship, bravery, and adventure. Because girls deserve big adventures, too. Stories like this made me feel like I could do more, try new things, and push the boundaries of society's expectations.

I recommend the Lioness Quartet first - although targeted to younger readers, I still love it (it’s a comfort read). The Tricksters Duology is my second favourite, mostly because of the fun characters. Key points: - A hallmark of Tamora Pierce’s work is highlighting in every series strong heroines. - MC is a spy, ending up on her own adventure to help others (and gets tangled up with some colourful characters, including a God and a crow-man?) - Has some *interesting* romance (although not the primary focus) - Although not the easiest read, there’s a lot of politics too that keeps things…twisty? Let’s talk book series and covers. I usually strongly prefer my books in a series to match. If the series is relatively recent I try to keep the books matching. Except when the publishers change the covers... that I can’t fix. 😢 My older series I have come to terms with the fact that mismatched books have character. Plus, I buy a lot of my old books used, and you take what you can get! Although if I do ever win the lottery you bet I’m going to be buying every single Star Wars book in hardcover! 🤑 Pictured here are a two of my mismatched series that I would love to replace one day when it’s more affordable. The Sycthe trilogy I accidentally purchased Thunderhead in hardcover, which threw the whole thing off and I’ll have to buy Scythe in hardcover one day. Cat Lovers Pocket Mala This is the first completed mala I've made. It is made mostly of upcycled glass jewelry, with a few pieces that I bought new, on hand knotted hemp. I hope to make more, and each will be at least slightly different, with the beads I am able to get. Even using from the same pieces of jewelry until they are gone, there is the difference in the millefiori beads. And the cat part of it? I mean, be honest...if you have pets, how often are you going to have to use your mantras to calm down after walking in to discover they've trashed a room, puked on your bed, or any number of other things? May as well have a mala that reminds you that you do love the little crazies anyway ;~) My hands and wrists are relatively small, especially for my height, and the mala is a little too big. But I read somewhere that suggested using a safety pin as sort of a clasp, as pocket malas are often a little big. It’s still Monday on the east coast! Last minute #MapMonday. Childhood books that made me fall in love with reading. Tamora Pierce was one of my favorite fantasy authors growing up. Alanna the Lioness was one of the first heroines that could do all the awesome things the boys could, only better! And I continued to read her books for years. I still do today. Trickster’s Choice and Trickster’s Queen is one of my favorite duologys. Alianne of Pirate’s Swoop is the daughter of some of our favorite characters of the original books. Accidentally taken by pirates and sold into slavery, Ali has to use all her skills to save herself, and maybe even the kingdom she’s trapped in. Even as an adult I highly recommend these, especially if you read and loved the Tortall books when you were younger. Trickster’s Duet by Tamora Pierce Ali, the main character in this series, is the daughter of nobles but trained in the art of the spy. Her father is the head spymaster of her home country of Tortall. She ends up captured and sold as a slave in another land, where she makes a bargain with a trickster god to keep a couple of young noblewomen safe for the summer. Without giving too much away, this series has to do with race and being oppressed because of the color of your skin. The noble women that Ali is supposed to protect are mixed. It’s a very good story, and in the same world as Pierce’s other series with Alanna the Lioness (Ali’s mom). If you like YA fantasy, and Pierce’s other books, you’ll love these! From the detail of the spy work to the overall rebellion plans, from the genuine love of Nawat to the strong, proud female relationships to the nuanced shifting of racial views and relations, Pierce again shines in both the little details and the overall world-building.
