Before the coffee gets cold by Toshikazu Rawaguchi. 3 stars. Audiobook: I can understand the appeal of this novel, however, I found it rather dull. I caught myself having to rewind bits of the audiobook because I would lose focus and miss details. Although, chapter 4, was easily the best part and improved my overall rating. It was more emotional and thought provoking. I also had a more emotional attachment to the character given her circumstances regarding why she wanted to jump in time. The overall concept I really enjoyed and feel like it had great potential. I just wasn’t overly thrilled with the execution. Happy Sunday everyone!! ☀️ Before the Coffee Gets Cold series by Toshikazu Kawaguchi is one of the best series I’ve read so far! Definitely 5 stars!! Each book contains four different stories about people who visit this magical cafe where you can travel back to the past. There is a catch though, you need to be back before your coffee gets cold. There are also some other rules, but I will let you discover them while reading the books. Each book in the series can be read independently. Personally, I liked the release order of the books and read accordingly. Something about these stories.. I wasn’t able to put the book down. The stories feel real, sincere, and heart warming. If you are in a reading slump, this book is a great start to get back into reading again. Or if you’re busy, and don’t want to invest in long stories or complicated plots, this can also be a great book to read. The books are easy to read, can be finished in a day (if you want to of-course). The stories leave you with a wholesome heart in the end. I mean what more can you want from a short story?? Before We Say Goodbye by Toshikazu Kawaguchi As the final installment of the series, I was looking forward to how this last book would match up in comparison to the prior stories. We are back at the Funiculi Funicula cafe in Tokyo, where there are four new stories with many returning characters as they travel back to the past in order to say one last goodbye. This time, my ranking of most to least favorited stories are the farewell, the daughter, the proposal, and the husband. For this book, I found some of the characters to be a bit annoying and not as relatable because of how selfish they were. At this point in the series, I also thought many details became a bit boring and repetitive because of how often the time traveling rules were repeating and how many of the stories shared similar patterns with how they start and end. However, I still enjoyed reading many of the stories and how the characters grow aganst their better judgement. As always, the life lessons are very memorable and important, and I enjoy seeing how there is a sense of found family amongst the cafe workers and their regulars as their paths often overlap. I wish the story was a bit longer because there are a few ends that I felt were left unfinished (especially with Nagare), but it seemed like everything came full circle in a way that connected with the ending of the first book. This was a very quick read I finished in less than two days, so I would definitely recommend this book for a quick read (after the other books of course). Overall, I really enjoyed this series and grew to love the time traveling lore the coffee holds. My favorite book from the series is definitely the first one, but I enjoyed reading all sixteen stories the books told, so I would highly recommend this series for lovers of fiction and fun. Also, if you were able to travel to past or the future, when would you travel to and why? Food for thought lol. I've high expectations this year. I completed reading "Before the coffee gets cold: Tales from the Cafe" the second book from the series. However, I'm still sitting in one of the chairs of "Funiculi Funicula" taking a sip of coffee, watching Kazu pouring drinks, Nagare brewing fresh coffee in the kitchen, playful Miki making fun of his dad and the woman in the dress silently reading the book. This book also had four stories just like the previous one. The four stories are of: 1. The Best Friend 2. Mother and Son 3. The Lovers 4. The Married Couple All the four stories were unique in their own and had different stories. However the only thing in common was their feelings. If I have to choose my favourite among these four, "The Lovers" will be the one. This part made me look at things in a different way or I can say it changed my perspective of viewing things. And in my case only few books can do this. Happiness depends on the way you see and take things. The new character Miki is cute and such an entertaining character. We'll she's Nagare's daughter. Also the way it is beautifully connected to the previous book and how pieces are left for the other two books. I love how these all relate to eachother directly and indirectly. Before Your Memory Fades - Toshikazu Kawaguchi Before the Coffee Gets Cold - Book 3 In northern Japan, Cafe Donna Donna sits overlooking the picturesque Hakodate Port. Just like its sister cafe in Tokyo, Cafe Donna Donna has a secret. The cafe has one chair that will allow you to travel to the past or into the future. Using the chair comes with some very strict rules, including not being able to change the past, the person you want to see must have visited the cafe and you must return to your current time before the coffee gets cold. While the seasons change outside Cafe Donna Donna, four individual take the risk to sit on the chair to travel to either the past or the future in the hopes to bring closure to themselves or their loved one. I love this series, the writing is absolutely beautiful. In this book we are introduced to a new lot of characters but we still get to hold on to some beloved characters from the previous books. The four individual stories weave together seamlessly with the over-arching storyline tying it all together. I loved the use of the seasons outside the cafe to demonstrate the passage of time but allows for the rich scenic descriptions. The content in this series can be heavy at times while the characters experience loss, grief and often acceptance. It’s a cozy read with genuine substance, I highly recommend. "Tales from the Cafe" by Toshikazu Kawaguchi - Book 2 of the series "Before the coffee gets cold". 📚 In this book there are another set of stories - of best friends, a mother and son, lovers, and a married couple. Gohtaro, Yukio, Kutara, and Kiyoshi travelled in time to have that one last talk with the people they love and do personal missions that they were not able to do during the original timeline. Three of them travelled *to* the past and one travelled to the cafe *from* the past. And as always, all came back different and with a renewed hope. This book also answered the questions I had when I first read "Before the coffee gets cold". 🙂 My favorite story in this book is of Yukio and his mother. 🥹 All the stories though have one same lesson. And it took going to the past to make the time travellers realize that - that they all deserve to be happy. My favorite quote was from Kutara: "That child used its seventy-day long life for your happiness. If you remain devastated, this child will have used those seventy days in vain. But if you try to find happiness after this, then this child will put those seventy days towards making you happy. In that case, its life has meaning. You are the one who is able to create meaning for why that child was granted life. Therefore you absolutely must try to be happy. The one person who would want that for you the most is that child. Before the Coffee Gets Cold was so ubiquitous on Bookstagram accounts that I just assumed it would be another sloppily written and shallow popular fiction best seller. But when I saw that my daughter, obsessed will all things Japanese but discerning in literature, was reading it, I couldn’t resist giving it a try. In fact, I really enjoyed the book. I found it evocative, hard to put down, and thought provoking. For anyone not yet aware of the story, the action takes place in a centenarian, dark “sepia coloured” basement café in Tokyo. Amongst the establishment’s few chairs, there is one that allows guests to travel back in time, so long as a number of strict rules are adhered to, including returning to the present before their coffee goes cold. The characters are all charmingly idiosyncratic. And whilst reading their engrossing stories, the reader is led to reflect on what they would do if they were allowed to go briefly back to their past, to meet someone again, what would they say to them, always respecting another one of the rules of the café – that they are unable to do anything that would affect the outcome of the present. A wonderful book. Perhaps it is not a great work of literature, but will I be reading the others in the series? Before the coffee gets cold by Toshikazu Kawaguchi: My Review 4/5 ⭐️ This is a great and relatively short read. I originally decided to read it as part of my effort to read more translated fiction. (This was originally published in Japanese.) It's divided into 4 sections and tell 4 stories which are all linked. It was easy to get into and the character guide at the start helped me keep track of the central characters. I had mixed feelings on the writing style which often went into a lot of detail and felt repetitive. Sometimes this worked and it would focus on things which later became relavent but sometimes it made the book slow to read. Around the middle of the book it started to feel like it was dragging on but then everything was connected and the ending felt very satisfying. I really liked the concept of the book with the commonly used idea of time travel but the strict rules surrounding it which make the plot interesting. I also felt like this book was emotional when necessary but it was never overdone. Tapi ada aturan-aturan yang sulit dan membuat pelanggan saling bersaing, rela menunggu berhari-hari bahkan berbulan-bulan untuk antri ke masa lalu. So, how about my opinion? Novel ini berisi potongan cerita para pelanggan caffe yang memesan menu ke masa lalu. Menceritakan potongan kehidupan para pelanggan dan beragam alasan mereka untuk pergi ke masalalu. Namun, dalam potongan cerita para pelanggan tersebut tetap ada alur cerita tokoh utamanya dari awal sampai ahir (aku lupa ini istilahnya apa wkwk) Dari segi bahasa, novel ini ringan dan mudah dipahami. Alurnya runtut jadi bisa dibaca sekali duduk. Namun, karena pengulangan konsep cerita, yang mana pengulangan scene dimana para pelanggan pergi ke masalalu kemudian balik lagi ganti pelanggan lainya, hal ini cukup membosankan. Membuat alurnya terasa flat... Buku ini series, dan masih ada lanjutan sampai buku ke-4, sepertinya buku ini cocok ketika lagi pengen baca yang ringan dan ga perlu mikir. Atau, buat selingan karena potongan-potongan cerita tidak harus di baca sekali duduk juga. Tapi, disisi lain cerita dalam buku ini sangat heartwarming dan mengandung banyak nasihat. Kdyby ses mohl vrátit v čase, koho bys chtěl potkat? Série Before the coffee gets cold byla náplní mých posledních pár měsíců. Čekala jsem, že to bude spíše odpočinkové čtení, což tak napůl i bylo. V každé knize se dozvídáme pár příběhů zákazníků kavárny, kteří se chtějí vrátit převážně do minulosti, ale i budoucnosti. Některé příběhy jsou opravdu srdcervoucí, až mi přirostly k srdci. Kdybych měla vyzdvihnout mé pořadí oblíbenosti knih, tak by to byla první a třetí kniha série. Nemyslím si, že je potřeba číst je chronologicky, i když je to lepší, protože v každé knize se odkrývají určité informace, ale i ty se občas zmíní v dalších dílech. Takže bych řekla, že záleží na čtenáři. Každá kniha série se odehrává v jiných letech. Skáčeme 15 let dopředu, potom o pár let dále a ve čtvrté knize se vracíme do minulosti před knihou první. Za mě je určitě styl psaní autora trošku jiný, trvalo mi zprvu si zvyknout. Každý příběh má minimálně 40 stran což vychází většinou na 4 příběhy na jednu knihu. Kdybych měla tu možnost si sérii přečíst znovu, udělám to.
