During solar eclipse week it feels appropriate to share this #LisaAndTheChairGoHere tribute to one of my favorite YA novels I read as a teenager, EAST by #EdithPattou. It’s a #retelling of the Scandinavian fairy tale called East of the Sun and West of the Moon, and it is still one of my favorite books ever. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Rose, the main character, has lived on a farm in Norway with her family her whole life, but when their fortunes start to plummet, Rose is confronted by a magical, talking white bear who promises her family wealth and fortune if she agrees to go away to live with him. I read the last of my "winter"-themed books this year as our winter here in Michigan finally began winding down. 𝘌𝘢𝘴𝘵 is a retelling of "East of the Sun, West of the Moon," an enchanting fairy tale with such incredible potential for expansion. It had been many years since I'd read this book, but I instantly remembered what I loved about it. 𝘌𝘢𝘴𝘵 is quiet, folklore-laden, and detail-focused. I have always enjoyed books that told me how characters became skilled at a particular talent, how they made their way from one place to another, how they survived on few resources or in unfamiliar territory, etc. I feel that tales slowly unfolding in this way is a quality that isn't found as often in YA anymore. We assume that attention spans have shortened, and so we skip to the action. Whether this change is really for the better or necessary, I'm not sure. But I do know that I love coming across a book that is lovingly written, not in a hurry, and captures my interest with the character voice and slow-build of story and relationships. If you love fairy tale retellings, family bonds, historical settings, journeys and quests, Nordic inspiration, and sinking into a story that feels magical and real at the same time, I recommend 𝘌𝘢𝘴𝘵 by Edith Pattou! ❄️ (P.S. Welcome to deja vu 🤔 • • • I did it! I finally read a book with #teatimebookclub🫖 and got a start on my “at least half of the books read for book club” goal. And this one was a fun book to start it off with. I will admit that I didn’t get around to reading it until this month is almost over. Almost like there was still a rebellious part of me holding off until the very end. That seems accurate. Also yes. I am 100% using a background I took in the spring because I am already over January and winter. It’s called hopeful manifesting. • • • While reading this book, I kept having these vivid flashbacks to my childhood and this old VHS tape we had. This was one of the fancy ones. You know the kind that have their own thick plastic cover. Not the blockbuster special but the collectors edition type. Turns out this rather humorous 1990’s movie called The Polar Bear King we would watch to laugh at the special effects and cheesy acting was somewhat based off the same Norwegian folktales this book was based on. It’s slightly different, as this book is based on just East of the Sun and West of the Moon and the movie also had The White Bear, King Valemon mixed in as well. Every time the plot would line up with my memories, it made me giggle. That probably influenced my enjoyment of this book, but I still think it would be a fun read for anyone even if they didn’t have that memory! It also probably helps that I adore ridiculous movies. The poor acting and clunky effects usually don’t deter me, but rather make it more entertaining for me. What's still on your winter tbr? I know what's on everyone's list for next week! I'm so excited for the latest Sarah J Maas release and I'll definitely be reading that next week but I am hoping to get to this one before the end of winter as I've heard it's a great read for the season. Jej výstroj a oblečenie si, ak sa nemýlim, zaslúžili v knihe niekoľko strán opisov a mne najviac utkveli v pamäti kačacie pierka, ktoré tvorili významnú súčasť Rosiiných príprav. . Knižku som už dlho nečítala, ale spomínam si na ňu ako na síce o niečo menej dynamickú, ale veľmi príjemne napísanú fantasy záležitosť so zaujímavou hrdinkou. Hoci sa jedná o variáciu na severskú rozprávku o kráľovi zakliatom do podoby ľadového medveďa, autorka svoj príbeh poňala celkom originálne a Rosiino putovanie za nápravou škôd, ktoré nevedomky napáchala, má hrdinsko-epický charakter. . Pekná knižka. Hlavne s touto obálkou od obľúbenej Charlie Bowater. Dlho sa chystám na rereading, aj na voľné pokračovanie s názvom West, ale od toho ma odrádza skutočnosť, že vraj na konci postavy nečaká happy end, ako som niekde zachytila, a tak asi radšej ostanem len pri prvom diele, ktorý skončil uspokojivo. Asi by ma totiž mrzelo, keby to s postavami nakoniec dopadlo smutne... . . Poznáte túto knihu? . ❄️ Winter Beasts ❄️ QOTD: What would you do if the person you loved was not who you thought they were and was unfairly imprisoned because of something you did? Once there was a girl whose family was very poor. Her father essentially sells her for riches and convinces her to go with a white bear. They travel to a grand castle, and each night, a man comes into the bed with her and quickly falls asleep. But no candle will light and she can't see who it is. She starts to fall in love with the Bear and gets homesick. He sends her home and tells her to not be alone with her mother. Well she does that anyway and is given an enchanted candle. She comes back at the appointed time, bringing that candle with her. That night, she lights the candle and sees the most beautiful man she has ever seen. As she is leaning over to get a better look, candle wax drips onto his shirt and he wakes up angry, "If you had only waited a few more days, the curse would have been broken!" The man and the castle disappears and the man is taken magically to the troll princess who lives, you guessed it, East of Sun and West of Moon. The girl travels from crag to crag and from Wind to Wind, being given gifts along the way, until the North wind blows her all the way to the land of the Trolls (or witch queen/stepmother who is trying to marry him off). Once there, she completes challenges and earns back her love. The White Bear is now forever a human (and a prince!) and the evil lady dies in a fit of rage. Does that sound a little like the premise of A Court of Thorns and Roses? 🧐 That's because it's the same premise. ACOTAR has much more in common with East of Sun, West of Moon than with Beauty and the Beast (dying of heartbreak vs. trapped in marriage and the needs to complete challenges to defeat an elusive and powerful female) East of Sun, West of Moon was first introduced to me as a folklore printed on printer paper from one of my older sister's classes. If you want a short, tragic tale set during winter, 𝑬𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒏 𝑭𝒓𝒐𝒎𝒆 is for you. ——— #whatthisweek Hi, friends! How are you all? ❄️ reading… Last week I started reading a Nutcracker retelling (𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑲𝒊𝒏𝒈𝒅𝒐𝒎 𝒐𝒇 𝑺𝒘𝒆𝒆𝒕𝒔) but I DNF’d it pretty quickly. Just…not good. 😬 A few nights ago I finished 𝑩𝒐𝒏𝒆𝒔𝒎𝒊𝒕𝒉 by @nickipaupreto and really enjoyed it! It actually takes place in winter too. There were mentions of snow on the ground often. I had to finish it within twenty-four hours because it was part of the @simonteen free reads (although oddly enough I still had access to it two days later so as long as you open the link within twenty-four hours you get access). And most recently I read the Edith Wharton novella 𝑬𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒏 𝑭𝒓𝒐𝒎𝒆 and started 𝑬𝒂𝒔𝒕 by Edith Pattou. ✨ watching… The Netflix movie 𝑺𝒊𝒍𝒗𝒆𝒓 𝑺𝒌𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒔 which has the most perfect Russian Winter setting with ice skating and a ball on ice! I also started watching the 𝑨 𝑪𝒉𝒓𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒎𝒂𝒔 𝑷𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒄𝒆 trilogy because…iconic. I NEED to be at that castle and hunting lodge this season. Hello, hello!!! What have you been reading lately? I am trying to finish off my 23 in 23 list (3.25 books still to go). Some of these are from that list. I'll likely have longer reviews for these later, but I thought it would be a nice wrap up for the end of the year. (scroll through for book covers) 1. Daddy Long Legs by Jean Webster. This was a bookclub read and my I have no idea how many reread. This book is just an absolutely delightful coming of age. Funny, lovely, and effervescent. 2. The Bronzed Beasts by Roshani Chokshi. This was an absolutely amazing conclusion to this series. I laughed. I cried. I sighed at the beautiful story. Love this series! 3. Never Wager with a Wallflower by Virginia Heath. I think this was my favourite in this trilogy (though I love them all). It was very funny, and also just lovely. 4. Two Twisted Crowns by Rachel Gillig. I absolutely loved it. I think it was even better than One Dark Window, which I also love. So so so good! Such an excellent duology. 5. A River Enchanted (and A Fire Endless) by Rebecca Ross. Wow. I couldn’t put either of these books down. What a spellbinding and absolutely gorgeous story. One of my favourites this year. 6. West by Edith Pattou. This was the sequel to East, with one of my favourite fairytales. I loved it! A really excellent follow up. 7. Three Kisses One Midnight by Roshani Chokshi, Sandhya Menon, and Evelyn Skye. These were so cute! Each story fit so well together and they were just a ray of sunshine. But there was no way there.” Another favorite read for this time of year! @ediepattou stole my heart with this sweet book. The cover of the second book, West, caught my eye (I love snakes!) so I knew I wanted to read it but had to read East first and I’m so glad I did! If you want a beautiful fairytale retelling of East of the Sun and West of the Moon, this book is for you! It’s a young adult book and a pretty quick read if you want to add in a couple fast books before the end of the year! It’s similar to Beauty and the Beast, but it is Norwegian in origin so it is a bit different. The snow fall and cold journey and magical spell do make it perfect for winter! It’s one I’ve reread several times since discovering it and I know I’ll read it more and more as the years go by! It’s just lovely and atmospheric and perfect for the cold weather this season! East by Edith Pattou Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️✨ (3.5 stars) Genre: Fairytale Retelling/Middle Grade Fantasy Smol synopsis: A white bear shows up on Rose’s doorstep and says she can restore health and prosperity to her family and she leaves with him. Rose’s sense of adventure and the fact that she has always felt different from her family compel her to go. This is sort of a #smolreadsrevisited, except I never actually read it when I first got it years ago, but #betterlatethannever?? This book pleasantly surprised me- it moved quickly with short chapters and multiple POV, which I always love, and it wasn’t hard for me to understand the world. Rose is a fun multifaceted character (I always have a soft spot for yarn crafters!), and there’s a mystery in the first half of the book that I was pretty interested in. The book did lose little steam for me in the second half before the climax. That being said, I recommend to anyone looking for a fairytale retelling or epic journey sort of story, as long as you’re not looking for great prose. “Once upon on a time there was a poor farmer with many children” Fantasy Girl Fall is off to a great start with this magical, gentle read. It was so comforting and the romance is so sweet. This is a multiple POV book and each character had such a unique voice, it almost felt like they were all written by different people. East is based on the Norwegian fairy tail ‘East of the Sun and West of the Moon’ so this book was so nostalgic for me because my parents used to read me that story when I was a child. It’s really the perfect book if you need a little bit of escapism. This is for all the wild, adventurous hearts out there. I would especially recommend this as a good read to get you in the winter mood. East by Edith Pattou OVERALL RATING: 4🌟🌟🌟🌟 (rounded up from 3.75) I really enjoyed this story! It reminded me so much of The Bear and The Nightingale, The Golden Compass and for some strange reason (because I have never read or seen all the way through) Howl's Moving Castle. It wasn’t overly action packed, but it was interesting and captivating. The plot was well built and paced extremely well. The last 100 pages are by far the most intense, but again the pacing was perfect. I found myself unable to put this book down the entire time! It’s YA but I found it to be quite mature at the same time, which I really appreciated. You get several POV’s, Rose being your main character. Rose’s POV was more story-like, while the other POV’s felt like diary entries. I like Rose a lot! She is talented and creative, very smart and quick witted; but above all those, she is quite the perseverer and positive thinker. Neddy is her older brother, and his POV’s were more to keep us updated on what the family was up to, but I appreciate his love and support for Rose. White Bear is technically your main male character, and he is quite mysterious most of the book, but I found his character very interesting! I Finally, Troll Queen is your bat-shit crazy queen lady trying to steal a man to marry! I was thoroughly entertained by this book, despite the lack of action or smut LOL. I don’t need action or smut to make a book entertaining of course, but I read a lot of those types of books so it is SO nice when a YA like this keeps my attention. I kept starting books instead of just finishing anything and finally sat down this afternoon determined to wrap this one up (it’s also due back to the library, so it forced me to read!) and I’m so delighted! This follows the journey of Rose and the white bear. It’s all things magic, epic love, betrayal and loss and of course a thread of hope woven throughout the story. This is considered a retelling of the classic tale “East of the Sun and West of the Moon” which I think was inspiration for beauty and the beast, and this was a delight. It says 12+ on the description, and if you have a young reader, it’s the perfect dip into fantasy that’s truly captivating. It was 20 years ago today…EAST was published! Which is unfathomable; 2003 feels like yesterday and also a lifetime ago. When I first set out to tell the story of Rose and the white bear I had no idea it would touch so many. I only knew I needed to tell the tale of this mighty girl who journeyed so far and defied so many odds. I love the journey EAST has taken me on and I am ever grateful to my mom for putting The Blue Fairy Book (where I first encountered that unnamed heroine of East of the Sun and West of the Moon) into my seven-year-old hands. 🧭 East / West 🧭 A fabulous dulogy based on an old Norwegian folktale originally titled "East O' the Sun and West O' the Moon" I love retellings and reworks! I think that's been established. These books are no exception! Poetic writing, unique style, and a story with all-new twists and turns to the classic tale. I love the vivid details, even when it gets dark. Funny story. When the first print of East by Pattou was released, I was 13. I remember looking at the old cover, wanting to read it. I had no Goodreads tracker back then because Goodreads didn't exist. I had a book journal. But I forgot this one. I missed out. Then, fate! Edith published a sequel 10 years after the first! I'm so glad! It meant I finally had book one find it's way into my radar again as a bookseller. That was one of my favourite rediscover moments. Sono di parte con questo romanzo, perché ho scoperto essere ispirato da una delle mie fiabe preferite “A est del sole e a ovest della luna” e voglio ringraziare chi me l’ha messo nella challenge. Se poi non avete visto “Il regno d’inverno” ve lo consiglio. L'autrice ha fatto un ottimo lavoro di elaborazione. Sebbene abbia un punto di vista più realistico, usa bene gli elementi chiave dell’originale, rendendogli giustizia. E, da brava persona aromantica, ho gradito che la storia d’amore si discosta dal classico e non gioca con il “colpo di fulmine”, perché qui è più un “colpo di sfiga”. Ammetto di aver fatto fatica ad abituarmi allo stile dell’autrice all’inizio. I capitoli sono molto brevi e la narrazione è corale, diversificata tra: la protagonista, il padre, il fratello, l’orso e la regina dei troll. Questo cambio di pov non segue un ordine preciso, ma varia in base alle varie situazioni presentate. Così come la storia è divisa in quattro parti, ognuna con un’ambientazione diversa. L’opera quindi è laboriosa a livello di contenuti e, non essendo amante dei capitoli brevi, ci ho messo un po’ ad abituarmi al ritmo narrativo con cui è cadenzata e a non perdere il filo di chi è chi. A dispetto di ciò, l’ambientazione, l’introspezione e la caratterizzazione dei personaggi è ben eseguita. Rose è un’ottima protagonista, ma avrei preferito qualcosa di più dal punto di vista del principe. Escludendo i momenti in cui era un orso, da umano appariva più come un tavolino, ma deve essere la moda dei libri di oggi, vedendo i vari protagonisti maschili. L’ultima parte, quella con elementi più fantasy, ha compensato bene il realismo iniziale, chiudendo in moto ottimale la fiaba. Nel suo piccolo è stata una lettura gradevole e spero che prima o poi il sequel arriverà anche qui in Italia… anche se ne dubito. Per fortuna, si può considerare uno stand-alone per cui niente paura! Pro: ottimo retelling, buona caratterizzazione dei pg e contento storico. Since it's been so long since I posted anything.. MULTIPLE BOOK REVIEW 📚: West by Edith Pattou • 4/5 ⭐ • This world and story was so much fun to go back and visit after having read East years ago. While I do think the story rushed at some points, the classic characters remained true through the years and I really enjoyed the introduction of new characters that truly enhanced the story. East will always hold a special place in my heart and I'm glad West was written to finish the story. A Gathering of Shadows by @veschwab • 5/5 ⭐ • This woman is becoming one of my favorite authors quickly. This book!! Being the second in the series I was nervous for how this could progress but dang! It left me wanting more and needing to read the third! Kell, still my solid dude. And loved that we had the opportunity to get to know Rhy more. I honestly appreciate how the first half of the book was just watching these characters fight with their demons from the first book. I can't wait to read the third! A Clash of Kings by George R. R. Martin • 4/5 ⭐ These books take a bit of energy to read, but always turn out to be worth it! Lots of story lines to follow and there wasn't too much action until the last third of the book, but I'm sticking it out. Babel by @kuangrf • 5/5 ⭐ • I was so happy I read this book. I feel like I learned a lot and was engaged in a time of the world that I knew so little about. I felt so passionately about these characters and their development and their desires to set the world right. Learning a bit about language and just how it truly connects us all, was inspiring. I definitely recommend you read this at some point in your life.

Och att Skönheten och odjuret också är en retelling av den sagan. Jag kan då absolut inte jämföra eller dra paralleller från North Child till originalsagan, men spelar det egentligen någon roll? Nej. Jag älskade denna bok. Jag trodde det skulle vara mer en 9-12 års bok, men tycker mer att den läses som unga vuxna. Stämningen är underbar. Det var spännande, känslosamt och jag blev nyfiken på hur berättelsen skulle utveckla sig. Jag hade roligt när jag läste denna bok. This week’s #8brilliantbooks with @mrsbrownsbookbox is focused on A Twist In The Tale. Fractured fairy tales, stories founded in folklore, tales rooted in ancient myths and legends, modern sequels to older classics, gender swapped versions, more diverse characters, stunning sequels to childhood favourites. This is just a tiny fraction of our collection of tales with a twist. This is a genre the children and I adore. We love reading different versions of stories that we love. We love finding connections between new stories and ancient worlds. We love writing our own stories based on traditional tales and fairy stories and myths and legends. These books bring old works to a new audience and they bring outdated stories up to date and more reflective of our modern world. These books get children reading and writing and they get children excited about the possibilities of playing with stories. They take away the idea that every story has to be new, that writing must begin with a blank page. We have included some graphic novel versions of classics. This is an area of our shelves we are developing. There are some beauties out there! Do follow along with Esther and her hashtag this week to see more books on this theme. There are SO many we could have shared today. I will share our favourite picture books on this theme in my stories as there are some stunning twisted tales and fractured fairy stories for readers of all ages to enjoy. We absolutely love all of these books. If I had to pick a favourite I think it would be The Little Match Girl Strikes Back. Esther and I are hoping to see @emmacarroll2603 and @laurenchildthatsme is London next month to learn more about the creation of this book. Our current family readaloud is Finding Neverland by @moontrugger which we are all enjoying very much. @mossmontmomery has done an awesome job of making Shakespeare’s stories accessible for all and @joetoddstanton has created breathtakingly brilliant graphic novels to bring ancient myths to new young readers. @josephcoelhoauthor gives fairytales and Greek myths his own poetic magic and we love the results. Do you ever cover buy books? It’s honestly a majority of the way I find books 😂 I’ve found many favorite authors and favorite books that way so I’ll probably never stop! My husband may make fun of me, but aside from one book I can think of it’s always worked out well! West by @ediepattou was a big cover but for me. Not because it was a big purchase, but because the cover made me want both this and the book that precedes it - East! I don’t think I had bought a series because of a cover before, but I absolutely LOVED this one with the coloring and the snake. And I’m so glad it caught my eye because this is one of my favorite sets of books I’ve read in the past few years! It’s a young adult retelling of the fairytale East of the Sun and West of the Moon and I loved every moment of it! I can’t recommend this sweet duology enough if you enjoy this sort of thing! Here's another book I was supposed to finish before Christmas 🌲 . . Let me know if I'm wrong, but I thought the book is marketed as a middle grade and it cannot be far from truth. It's clearly YA and since I read keeping in mind that it's a middle grade I found so many things that were disturbing to me if a child read it. . . Aside from that fact this book feels like a rework of ACOTAR which in return is a retelling of beauty and the beast. I found the story telling to be boring especially in the middle part. I was so glad the book was over. . . Now that I ranted out my feelings, the story follows Rose who is a younger daughter in a huge family. One day a white bear comes and take her away from the family in exchange of good fortune ( see why I hate the story). Later in the story we learn why the bear took her and the bear is actually a bear or not. . . This book doesn't even give the vibes and atmosphere of a cold winter and cosiness that the cover and storyline promised. . .
