Artist, philanthropist, and founder of GFS Seward Johnson (1930-2020) was born in New Jersey on this day in 1930. Johnson’s earliest artistic efforts were in painting, but as his aesthetic developed, he gravitated more towards sculpture. His first cast work of sculpture won the Award in Steel Art competition, which included over 7,000 entries. His works are exhibited internationally and are included in private collections, museums, and public art collections. If you’ve taken a walk around the grounds, you may have done a double take at a sculpture you thought was real- those are one of Seward’s specialties. His body of work consists of three distinct series: the Celebrating the Familiar man on the street works, the collection called Icons Revisited based upon images in the collective unconscious, and the Beyond the Frame series inspired by Impressionist paintings. In late 1982, he moved the Johnson Atelier, his school for sculpture, to a building adjacent to the dormant New Jersey State Fairgrounds. As the Atelier grew, Johnson began to envision a place to exhibit sculpture in nature. It became essential to him that the new sculpture park would be an accessible place where the public could experience contemporary sculpture and nature all in one, leading to a greater appreciation for both. As this initial idea grew, it would lead to the process of opening Grounds For Sculpture a decade later in 1992. We can do it! A huge warm hug to all of the ‘Rosie the Riveters’ out there, who were honored this week with the Congressional Gold Medal in honor of their years of work during World War II. The women known as “Rosie the Riveters” for their work during World War II were honored with a Congressional Gold Medal: “These are the invisible warriors on the home front.” Pictured here, a clip from Good Morning America, NPR, and Elinor Otto, one of the original Rosie’s, as seen with the Seward Johnson sculpture “Can Do!” Otto passed away last year, but we want to pass along our warmest congratulations to all who worked with her, and to the strong young women who honor her legacy.

After a week's worth of Quebec pictures, back to California I go (in photos, not in person 😂) I had wanted to see this monumental 25-foot installation for a long time and it truly was impressive in person! It was created by artist Seward Johnson and is of course based on the iconic World War II era photo of the lip-locked sailor and nurse. It's also apparently the most photographed site in San Diego! Visit FWBG this Saturday, April 6, for a tour of our newest exhibit, Seward Johnson Sculptures in the Garden, by Lynn DeClemente Losavio, Chief Legacy Officer at Seward Johnson Atelier. This art tour is included with general Garden admission. FWBG members receive free admission. The tour will begin promptly at 1 p.m. and will meet in the Leonard Courtyard, the area just behind the Garden Center. 📍Il GIGANTE della Valle Faul “il Risveglio“, l’opera di John Seward Johnson, situata nella Valle Faul di Viterbo. La titanica scultura di Seward Johnson ha trovato la sua casa a Viterbo. 🍀La grande scultura che prende il nome di The Awakening è stata creata da J. Seward Johnson, Jr. nel 1980 per l’International Sculpture Conference Exhibition. Appena realizzata, la grande opera d’arte fu installata nell’East Potomac Park, nel distretto di Washington DC., nel Maryland. Correva l’anno 2008 e il gigante di Seward Johnson venne traslocato nel porto Nazionale di Prince George’s County, nel Maryland dove si trova attualmente. Ma se Il Risveglio è ora negli Stati Uniti, perché possiamo vederlo a Viterbo?🥹 Dopo Siracusa e Roma l’opera venne posizionata a Viterbo , è stata collocata in quella zona come simbolo di un segnale di risveglio culturale in un’area molto importante della città. Mi sono imbattuta nell’opera per caso . ❤️una sorpresa vedere questo gigante d’alluminio che cerca di emergere dal terreno nel quale è sepolto.
