Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is one of the most unique places I have ever been to! It is located in northwestern part of lower portion of Michigan and is 25 miles from Traverse City in Empire. The park is approximately 32,500 acres and covers a 35-mile-long stretch of Lake Michigan's eastern coastline. In 2014, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore became the 50th National Park area with designated Wilderness. This breathtaking Northern Michigan park was established primarily because of its outstanding natural features, including forests, beaches, dune formations, and ancient glacial phenomena. The lakeshore also contains many cultural features including the 1871 South Manitou Island Lighthouse and three former stations of the Coast Guard. One of the most unique aspects of this National Park area are the perched dunes. The parking area is a short walk up to the top of these dunes. You will be awestruck by the breathtaking views of Lake Michigan! Be aware that is you choose to venture down these 450 feet+ dunes and you are unable to come back up, you will be fined $3000 to be rescued! It is VERY steep! On our visit in late June 2022, there was an abundance of biting flies so make sure you Don't forget the bug spray! The area with the light house had very clean restrooms, a small museum, gift shop, and they are in the process of restoring a building that will become a inn/hotel in the future. We saw many deer and squirrels during our visit. The cost is $25 per vehicle or $15 per person if your on a bicycle. This National Lakeshore area needs to be on your list if your planning to visit Michigan.
