How's the weather where you are?! I've been on a course this week but still squeezing in micro walks where I can... Last night I was at an environmental group meeting, in Osmotherley. They're such a passionate group of people, I'm learning so much. Whilst I'm not a resident of Osmotherley, I'm not far away and love the village. A lot of what's discussed has an impact on surrounding villages too. The weather may not be perfect for dry weather walkers, I'll walk in any weather, but it is IS perfect for toads if it's over 8ยฐC and wet. Between February and March they'll migrate to where they were born to spawn. However, sadly this means they often have to cross roads! With optimum conditions, they tend to start at dusk. Osmotherley has a dedicated "Toad Patrol" team. Every year, this team of people (I'm now one of them!) heads out to a long stretch of road near Cod Beck reservoir. Wearing hi vis vests, a head torch and a bucket, we collect the toads off the road and transport them to the reservoir. Can you imagine the male toad...he's found his position, in the middle of the road, he's eyeing up the ladies, as they cross. He sees one he particularly likes the look of. He starts to make his way towards her and he's scooped up and popped into a bucket!! The purpose of helping the toads is to stop them getting squished by traffic and to count them. Last night the helped over 300 toads! We get them on our back road too, but not that number. I think I saw/moved over 10. They're HUGE! The toad patrol even got a mention by Jo Whiley, Radio 2! So please, if it's SAFE to do so and you see a toad on the road...please move it off the road or at least avoid squashing it. Thank you and dance in the rain!
