🇹🇭Hong Island ⬇️⬇️ Why I feel Hong Island is super underrated. When taking day trips out of Krabi I think the main one is phi phi islands. I decided to come to Hong Island super last minute and this was one of my favorite tours. On the island I got to do a hike and then got to relax on the beach & also take a kayak out. The day just felt super relaxing all around. We got to hop to a few other islands but nothing ever felt rushed and I felt like I had plenty of time to do everything there was to offer. Elephant Sanctuary in Chiang Mai part II 🤍🇹🇭🐘 An absolute dream of a day spending time with these gentle giants. I cannot even begin to explain the feeling I had being around these elephants. I felt like I connected with them on a level I haven’t connected with other animals before. This was one of the best experiences I have had traveling and highly suggest going to one (or two) in Thailand. 📍Big Buddha, Phuket I decided to walk to this one from my hotel (Kata Tranquil Villa) which made the route easy to find. I’m dumb though and forgot you can’t have skin showing at the temples (I’ve been to Thailand before so how I forgot that I don’t know). Such a pinch me moment 🥹🐘🫶 I spent a wonderful day at @intothewild_elephantcamp where we got to feed, walk and bathe the elephants. I wanted to make sure the sanctuary I went to was an ethical one and they went into depth to explain the history of the elephants they rescued and how they care for them now. It was midnight and I figured I should head back to my hostel. Some Korean guys were sitting around a rectangular table on the patio, drinking. A guy and a girl sat indoors with drinks and snacks spread out around them. ‘Do you know if they serve breakfast here?’ I asked the girl. Her name was Ellie, 28 years old and from #Myanmar but she had been living in #Thailand since her mid-teens. She didn’t know anything about breakfast. Her friend Tai was #BurmeseChinese and they were celebrating the end of the alcohol-selling ban. It was good to sit and talk with them - my first real conversation since landing in Thailand. Ellie was pretty but lacked self-esteem. She wanted to get plastic surgery on her nose to make it narrower. ‘A person’s beauty isn’t just one physical feature,’ I said. ‘When you look at someone, your brain takes in their entire face and if you find them attractive, it’s a combination of all their features and more, including things like the way they speak, smile or laugh, the way they think or the stuff they say.’ ‘You’re so confident and comfortable in yourself,’ she said. That wasn’t quite accurate but I was aware of rejecting compliments and being self-deprecating which was harmful to my self-esteem. I wanted to be confident and comfortable in my skin and therefore I was going to accept this compliment, helping me to believe it over time. Also, I recently learned having low self-esteem didn’t mean it applied to every part of you. You could be confident in one area of yourself and feel ashamed of another part. And self-esteem could fluctuate daily, weekly, annually depending on a number of factors such as relationships, food or achievements. The more Ellie spoke, the more I started realising how harmful the beauty standards in #Asia were. It was important to be fair-skinned, have a small and sharp or oval face shape and to possess a petite body frame. This message was projected onto Asian women everywhere. I knew this already but it was always some vague information in my head, overshadowed by my huge fascination with Asia and my deep lust to run away from the UK and move there. . When I arrived in Phuket, I promised myself that I'd be following "the signs", whatever that meant for me at any given time. I was a bit scared of traveling solo again after 5 years of exploring locally (Australia). I had become so comfortable, i almost forgot the drill of a good adventure. After all, it's called comfort zone for a reason 😜 Starting from my first layover in Singapore, synchronicities started to happen, and I just had to follow the breadcrumbs. Then in Phuket, the real magic happened. It was as if people were leading me exactly where I wanted to go, all while getting the real, local experience and while meeting the most wonderful souls. From keeping crossing paths with travelers headed in the same direction to getting a lift to a temple with monks, I would have never had these experiences if I had pre-planned my entire trip. I even got a room upgrade because I clicked with the hotel owner! Traveling is never about the perfect picture, or the stamp on your passport, but rather about pushing yourself out of your comfort zone and realizing that... ...you got this. You got this now, ten years ago and ten years from now. And if you doubt about it, other people got your back. Throwback to when I spent Thanksgiving in Thailand in 2019 (part 1) 😌🕉 I'm reminiscing so hard on this trip! It was my first solo trip. One which lasted 15 days and one which made me fall in love with just about EVERYTHING Thailand had to offer 💛 So MANY firsts! First solo trip, first 16-hour flight, first time trying authentic thai cuisine, staying on a floating house, taking an overnight train that has bunks, first time seeing wild monkeys, playing with elephants & the list goes on & on! My first and probably last visit to an “Elephant Sanctuary” 🐘 There were some elephants roaming free here which is a good sign but I just did not like the vibe here at all. I guess it is better that the elephants have been rescued but I do find their current treatment very questionable. Was also really sad to see just how damaged an elephants back gets from humans riding them. Some can’t even stand up straight. Hired a driver to take us to a few places for the day which is how I ended up here.
