- BIRDS OF A FEATHER I've always liked to think of myself as color-blind when it comes to people. I love the fact that as I cycled from the northernmost point to the southernmost point of this still very much segregated—and incredibly hospitable—country, I felt I was transcending racial lines. I would befriend a black cleaning lady one day and a white landowner the next. But when the sun started going down and I could not find a secure place to pitch my tent, why, if I had the choice, did I ask the person that looked most like me for shelter? #worldbycycling #worldbybike #bicycletouring #bicycletour #biketouring #biketour #cycletouring #bicycletrip #bikewander #adventurecycling #biketravel #bicyclenomad #explorebybike #travelblogger #travelblog #TravelMoments #MyTravelStory #littlestoriesofmylife #travelstories #TravelWithMe #traveldiaries #postcardsfromtheedge #postcardsfromtheworld #postcards #misadventure #solotraveldiaries #solotravelstories #southafricatravel #travelsouthafrica #KwaZuluNatal

Palace of the Shirvanshahs The Palace of the Shirvanshahs is a 15th-century palace built by the Shirvanshahs and described by UNESCO as “one of the pearls of Azerbaijan’s architecture”. The complex contains the main building of the palace, Divanhane, the burial-vaults, the shah’s mosque with a minaret, Seyid Yahya Bakuvi’s mausoleum and the so-called “mausoleum of the dervish”. There are still ruins of the bath to the west of the tomb. In the past, the palace was surrounded by a wall with towers and, thus, served as the inner stronghold of the Baku fortress. Despite the fact that at the present time no traces of this wall have survived on the surface, as late as the 1920s, the remains of apparently the foundations of the tower and the part of the wall connected with it could be distinguished in the north-eastern side of the palace. There are no inscriptions that survived on the palace itself. Therefore, the time of its construction is determined by the dates in the inscriptions on the architectural monuments, which refer to the complex of the palace. Such two inscriptions were completely preserved only on the tomb and minaret of the Shah’s mosque. There is the name of the ruler who ordered to establish these buildings in both inscriptions is the – Shirvan Khalil As time of construction – was marked on the tomb, 845 on the minaret of the Shah’s mosque. 📸 in 2023 #traveling #travelers #travelbug #travelholic #travelgram #travelinggram #travelphotography #exploring #explorer #wanderer #wanderlust #doyoutravel #goexplore #travelmore #lovetotravel #wonderfulplaces #roamtheplanet #travellifestyle #solotravels #solotraveldiaries #solotravelstories #passionpassport #travelblogger #Azerbaijan #visitazerbaijan #asia #travelazerbaijan #europe #baku #shirvanshahspalace

for the longest time i looked for this sense of belonging… i used to look for it within 4 walls. a place of work. a partner. a circle of friends. or a place on the map. only to find out, after traveling for 1,5 years — a ‘home’ is not build within 4 walls. it does not depend on external factors. belonging is about cultivating a home within myself. an inner sanctuary that i can always turn to for that deep sense of belonging. so if you ever find yourself searching for a place to belong, remember that the ultimate home is you 🤍 #belonging #dearme #personalgrowthjourney #solotraveldiaries

Maiden Tower The Maiden Tower is a 12th-century monument in the Old City, Baku, Azerbaijan. It is one of Azerbaijan’s most distinctive national emblems, and is thus featured on Azerbaijani currency notes and official letterheads. The Maiden Tower houses a museum, which presents the story of the historic evolution of Baku city. The view from the roof takes in the alleys and minarets of the Old City, the Baku Boulevard and a wide vista of the Baku Bay. The Tower is surrounded by legends rooted in the history and culture of Azerbaijan. Indeed, some epics became a subject for scenario for ballets and theatre’s plays. The ballet Maiden Tower is a world-class masterpiece of the Azerbaijani ballet created by composer Afrasiyab Badalbeyli in 1940; a remake of the ballet was performed in 1999. There are various mysteries and legends related to Baku’s Maiden Tower. However, the main mystery is the Tower’s design and purpose. Meanwhile, there are up to 20 legends related to Baku Maiden Tower. A large number of them are connected to the Islamic and Medieval period of Baku’s history. But others are rooted deeply in Azerbaijan’s Zoroastrian or pre-Islamic history, religion, and culture. Probably, the most famous legend is that of the fiery-haired virgin girl who saved Baku’s people from slavery. The epic shows roots to Azerbaijan’s Zoroastrian beliefs and culture and has reached down to modern times. Consequent to the receding of the sea shoreline of the Caspian Sea, a strip of land emerged. This land was developed between the 9th and 15th centuries, when the walls of the old city, the palace including the huge bastion of the Maiden Tower were built. 📸 in 2023 #traveling #travelers #travelbug #travelholic #travelgram #travelinggram #travelphotography #exploring #explorer #wanderer #wanderlust #doyoutravel #goexplore #travelmore #lovetotravel #wonderfulplaces #roamtheplanet #travellifestyle #solotravels #solotraveldiaries #solotravelstories #passionpassport #travelblogger #Azerbaijan #visitazerbaijan #asia #travelazerbaijan #europe #baku #visitbaku

- WHY? Teka, an Ethiopian immigrant who was eking out a living from a small Spaza shop built inside a container, simply uttered out this one word when he saw my loaded bicycle. I have to admit that I prefer the equally common "what is your mission?", "what are you fundraising for?" or "where is your car?". At least I have straightforward answers to those, but this is one I hardly have figured out myself, let alone give a satisfactory answer on the fly on the side of the road... In a way, as impossible to answer as in a 100-word postcard. -------------------------- 🇫🇷 POURQUOI ? #worldbycycling #worldbybike #bicycletouring #bicycletour #biketouring #biketour #cycletouring #bicycletrip #bikewander #adventurecycling #biketravel #bicyclenomad #explorebybike #travelblogger #travelblog #TravelMoments #MyTravelStory #littlestoriesofmylife #travelstories #TravelWithMe #traveldiaries #postcardsfromtheedge #postcardsfromtheworld #postcards #misadventure #solotraveldiaries #solotravelstories #southafricatravel #travelsouthafrica #mpumalanga

3.5 weeks in manchester appreciation post 🌸 staying at this home was such a blessing, in many ways. ✨ it was the physical grounding place to co-facilitate 4 weeks of powerful healing via ‘amplify your voice on social media’ 🫂 it gave me the opportunity to invite a dear friend over for lunch & cacao… and meet them in-person for the first time!! 🏃 it re-activated my joy for running & walking daily 🎶 it showed me my fears with committing to music & singing 🤳 it helped me understand my ‘why’ thanks to a 3.5 hour phone call with a friend 🤝 & most importantly, it helped me recognize my genuine friendships. every home i’ve stayed in 2024 so far has had their own symbolic chapters of healing. as i wrap up this next month in the uk, i’m looking forward to see what these next 3 homes will unfold 🏠🤲✨ #solotravels #solotraveling #solotravelers #solotraveldiaries #solotravelstories #solotravelling #solotravellers #trustedhousesitters

In my almost 1.5 years of solo travel as a Digital Nomad, I've experienced moments of loneliness, but also moments of incredible connection. 💫 Just in the last two weeks alone, I've crossed paths with so many wonderful people, sharing unforgettable moments and laughter. Yet, as quickly as we meet, our paths separates, each of us traveling in a different direction and traveling at a different pace. And you know what? That's perfectly okay. That's the beauty of traveling solo. 🌍 If you're waiting for that one friend to join you on your adventures, don't! It's natural to feel afraid and uncertain, but trust me, you'll be just fine. 🙌 So take that leap of faith, step out of your comfort zone, and embrace the journey solo. You never know the incredible experiences and connections that await you.✨ 📸 by @giadacoma #solotravelstories #solofemaletraveler #solofemaletravel #goingsolo #embracethejourney #adventurenthusiasts

Eastern Borneo, July – August 1977. Some pictures don’t need too many words. I’ll just say that the man was one of the most traditional-looking of anyone I encountered during my time in Borneo. His hair is cut in the classic Punan style and as for his tattoos, well, I wish I knew more. As far as I understand, tattoo motifs used to have ritual significance, protecting the wearer, indicating places travelled and (when on men’s fingers) showing the number of heads he has taken. That flower motif on this man’s shoulders was very common. Women’s tattoos are different. Women get tattooed in a tight pattern on the backs of their hands, their forearms and on their lower legs. Again, different motifs have different meanings and they vary between different Dayak groups. All pretty hard to keep track of. If anyone reading this knows of a good source of information on this subject, please share. I’ve been wondering about this for the best part of fifty years! (By the way, the man didn’t wear those ear rings all the time. He kept them in a little pouch at his waist and put them on specially for the photograph.) (My book about this journey - ‘Words from a Wild Place. A Borneo Journal’ - is available on Amazon as both paperback and ebook. You can read reviews there too.) #borneo #eastborneo #eastkalimantan #exploreborneo #1970s #solotravelstories #travelwriters #travelwriting #travelbooks #travelmemoirs #memoirs #retrophotography #canonftql #kodachrome #dayak #dayakborneo #dayakkalimantan #dayakpunan #outdooradventure #outdoorsy #offthebeatenpath #offthebeatentrack #visualanthropology #rainforest

Quick story about solo traveling!! 📖 When I was staying in Xlendi, Malta (which is on the island Gozo), I took the bus to the middle of the island to explore the town of Victoria. While I was exploring Victoria, I decided to check out the Citadel Ruins. Since I was alone, I brought my tripod to set up when I wanted to take pictures. As I was walking through the ruins, I found a great spot and got out my tripod. Picture 3 is my failed attempt of setting up my tripod and it fell to the ground after I set the timer. It took the picture as I picked it up off the ground. So lovely 😂 After watching my failed attempt, someone walking nearby offered to take the picture for me, so I said sure! Insert Picture 2, with a finger covering the top corner. So me being me, they were like check them and make sure they’re good. I said oh they’re fine, even though I had seen the finger in the frame. I did not retake the photos, so instead, insert Picture 1, where I edited out the finger in the top corner. I didn’t do the best job at it but if I cared enough, I would do it better. You probably didn’t notice it until now that I’ve pointed it out. Oh well! That’s the reality of solo travel from time to time!! 🤩 #solotravel #solotravelstories #solotraveler #solotraveler #malta #maltagram #malta❤️ #gozo #gozoisland #gozomalta

Baku Old Town During the medieval period of Baku monuments as the Synyg Gala Minaret, the fortress walls and towers, the Maiden Tower, the Multani Caravanserai and Hajji Gayyib bathhouse, the Palace of the Shirvanshahs, the Bukhara Caravanserai and Gasimbey bathhouse were built. The Siniggala Mosque is the mosque built in the 11th century in Old City, Baku, Azerbaijan. The mosque is also known as Siniggala, after the name of its minaret – “damaged tower”. The mosque acquired its second name in 1723, when military squadron of Russian Army approached the city from seaside and demanded its surrender during the Russo-Persian War. Russian warships began to bomb the city after the refusal to surrender. One of the Russian shells hit the minaret of Muhammad Mosque and damaged it. A stormy wind then blew the Russian ships further out to sea. The population of the city interpreted the wind as a divine scourge sent to the occupants. From that time until the middle of the 19th century, the minaret of the mosque wasn’t reconstructed. It remained a symbol of the persistence and courage of the defendants of the tower. It is the first building in Azerbaijan, which is related to Islam and dated for its architectural ligature. The Baku Fortress is a medieval building in Baku, Azerbaijan, the largest of Absheron fortresses. The fortress consists of the Icheri Sheher and the walls and towers surrounding it. It was built in about 1138. Based on traveler’s illustrations and photos of the 19th century, the fortress consisted of a double wall. However, the second fortress walls were destroyed during the reign of Russia in Azerbaijan. The first fortress wall still remains. 📸 in 2023 #traveling #travelers #travelbug #travelholic #travelgram #travelinggram #travelphotography #exploring #explorer #wanderer #wanderlust #doyoutravel #goexplore #travelmore #lovetotravel #wonderfulplaces #roamtheplanet #travellifestyle #solotravels #solotraveldiaries #solotravelstories #passionpassport #travelblogger #Azerbaijan #visitazerbaijan #asia #travelazerbaijan #europe #baku #iceriseher

During the monsoon of 2018, one of my then favorite indie artists was doing a cool concert format called the House Gig Tour across the country. The concept was simple: he would perform intimate concerts at the houses of a few select fans. And a lucky few can get passes to these, and watch him perform live. Of course, it sounded cool and I wanted to go, but couldn’t get any passes. I ignored my disappointment and went about my trip to Goa. 🌴 On the last day, I found myself enjoying a quite breakfast at the idyllic café, overlooking the lush palm trees. I was reveling in the fact that, how despite the weather and scanty shacks, we were able to cover a lot of the beaches on this trip; and went about listing the order of my favorites. My friend listened intently for a while, before going back to their book. I relished my final Goan breakfast of poi vada and chai, as I daydreamed about revisiting this place in future memories. 🌱🌸 My thoughts were interrupted, when I heard my friend call out the name @prateekkuhad . I snapped back to reality and found myself seated in the same café, but this time with an energy of someone approaching. I turned towards the entrance, and immediately recognized the silhouette and signature printed shirt. I gasped in disbelief, and probably failed terribly at any attempts to contain this newfound enthusiasm. 🥲 Turns out he was visiting his friend, Laila, who happens to be the owner of the café and studio above where we were staying. I meaaaan, what are even the chances??! I walked up to him, and introduced myself – we small talked briefly, but awkwardly, and I left soon after. As I was walking out of the café, I realized I wanted something to remember this moment by, but was too timid to ask for a photograph. I mustered up the courage, and managed to get my digital token, and went about my day with a beaming and unstoppable smile! 🙃 (Story continued in comments) #ajubagoestripping #goa #goadiaries #monsoon #75daychallenge

İçəri Şəhər The Old City is the historical core of Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan. The Old City is the most ancient part of Baku, which is surrounded by walls. In 2007, the Old City had a population of about 3,000 people. The Old City is widely accepted to date at least to the 12th century, with some researchers contending that construction dates as far back as the 7th century. The question has not been completely settled. In 1806, when Baku was occupied by the Russian Empire during the Russo-Persian War, there were 500 households and 707 shops, and a population of 7,000 in the Old City, then the only neighbourhood of Baku, whom were almost all ethnic Tats. Between 1807 and 1811, the city walls were repaired and the fortifications extended. The city had two gates: the Salyan Gates and the Shemakha Gates. The city was protected by dozens of cannons set on the walls. The port was re-opened for trade, and in 1809 a customs office was established. Baku was divided into two sections: Ichari Shahar and Bayir Shahar. Inner City was the main part. Those who lived in the Inner City were considered natives of Baku. They were in close proximity to everything: the bazaar, craftsmen’s workshops and mosques. Residents who lived inside the walls considered themselves to be superior to those outside and often referred to them as the “barefooted people of the Outer City”. 📸 in 2023 #traveling #travelers #travelbug #travelholic #travelgram #travelinggram #travelphotography #exploring #explorer #wanderer #wanderlust #doyoutravel #goexplore #travelmore #lovetotravel #wonderfulplaces #roamtheplanet #travellifestyle #solotravels #solotraveldiaries #solotravelstories #passionpassport #travelblogger #Azerbaijan #visitazerbaijan #asia #travelazerbaijan #europe #baku #oldcity

Eastern Borneo, July – August 1977. A moment of great excitement in the longhouse. Wild boar was (still is) a favourite in these parts. (There was often a slightly delicate moment when you arrived at a longhouse for the first time and were asked if you could eat pork – something obviously a no-no for the muslim Bugis traders who occasionally passed through. When you said you could people were always pleased.) Dayaks hunt with dogs, letting them range free in the forest till they put up an animal. If they manage to corner it, the hunters will close in and kill the animal with their spears. Once back at the longhouse, the animal is divided up among all the families in the community*. *Not any more though, at least in this part of Kalimantan. A few years back I was talking to an older man and asked him if he missed anything about life in the longhouses. His answer was immediate. “Sharing” he said. “In the old days if a hunter got a boar or a deer he shared the meat with the rest of the longhouse. That was the custom. Now hunters sell the meat.” In the second picture the hunter has shot a monkey with his blowpipe. There’s more to this than meets the eye. Certain species of monkey grow bezoar stones in their intestines. These are highly prized in Chinese medicine and weight for weight fetch a higher price than gold. Yesterday’s post reminded me of another memorable incident that happened in a cafe in the hills. This one is a bit special to me, so I hope you enjoy it too. 🌸 After my time in Rishikesh, I found my way to Bir, a small village in Himachal Pradesh after what was a tediously long journey. It took me almost 18 hours to reach; and upon arrival, I knew I did not want to leave Bir, and somehow, overstayed my visit by a week. 🐣 On my supposed last day in Bir (I’ll tell you why supposed some other time), @sabchill and I found ourselves at the only cafe that was left unvisited on our checklist. We decided to grab a quick bite, and then head down to the landing site to catch our last sunset in Bir. 🌅 On first impression, @caferoamwild was a cute cozy cafe with boho decor, aesthetic paintings and interesting seating arrangements. Its muted beige and white theme retain an elegant charm, inviting you to feel right at home. 🤍 Looking at @murkh_mati_ki_sant aka Anjali, the cafe manager mixing up colours to paint the cafe fence washed us with a desire to paint as well. We enquired if they did any Art & Dine events at the cafe. She clarified that they have done such events in the past but nothing was planned at the moment, and went on to enquire about our respective painting styles and preferences. 🎨 She then, goes inside and comes back with watercolour paints and brushes and sets us up by the window and upps the cafe music! We feel delighted and laugh at this sudden change of plans on our agenda, but do not complain. 🌝 We settle in and immerse ourselves in the world of paints and paper. I painted a new memory of an ‘open’ cafe with picket fence and a flower box, while Sam painted the paragliders flying over Bir village. We presented both to Anjali as a token of our appreciation. She loved it so much she put them up on the display shelf at the cafe. 🥲 Sometimes, my mind just boggles at the power of art and appreciation, and how it allows so much space for vulnerability and acceptance, even for us mere mortals. ✨ If you like my pictures and storytelling, please do comment and share 🌻

You know that dream you’ve had for YEARS that you keep waiting for the ‘right time’ to do? Go do it babe. I was waiting FOR YEARS to explore Japan – my ultimate dream destination. Excuses kept me from it: 😬 I need to save more money because it’s going to be SO expensive (in the end it really wasn’t). 😬 I need to wait till I am in a relationship so I will have someone special to share this experience with (pfft, I’d still be waiting! I ended up going alone, made fun new friends, and had so much fun 🥰) 😬 I need the country to open its borders since COVID (ok that one was not under my control 😇) I decided to just to go for what my heart wanted… …and what I got was one of the MOST AMAZING experiences of my life. 🌸 I thought I was going to miss the cherry blossoms (my dream!) because it was colder this year…but I got them all in FULL BLOOM and it was a magical wonderland I will never get over 😍🥰 🌸 I was told it was unlikely I would see snow monkeys but instead I was bombarded with TONS of them hanging in and around the hot springs. 🌸 I was told seeing a Gesiha (Geiko) was super rare, and 2 of them walked right past me. I almost fell over in awe, they were sooooo beautiful and graceful. If you have been delaying one of your dreams and doubting it could ever be as amazing as you think…you’re right, it can be SO MUCH BETTER! Don’t wait for other people, go on your own and make your dreams happen! 🙌🏼 It’s your life, and you deserve to eat a rainbow sandwich 😄 Need that confidence boost to go out on your own? 💥 Tune into tomorrow for the start of my 10 Day Unlock Your Confidence Challenge and get the chance to score a FREE Tapping Session with me! I spent yesterday afternoon exploring #Plovdiv, Bulgaria’s second city and one of Europe’s oldest continuously occupied city. Walking through the city centre, you stumble on Roman ruins right next to communist era brutalism, with many other influences from the Ottomans to the contemporary creative and artsy scene in the Kapana district. We arrived late after a technical problem with the minibus but the sun was shining and although I spent a little time exploring the colourful Old Town, I planned to come back at the end of the day when it was quieter. Instead, after a lovely lunch at @smokini.bg, climbing up to the Clock Tower for a cityscape view, visiting various Roman remains including the beautifully preserved mosaics at @bishopsbasilica, the heavens opened. I detoured to @snackspecialtycoffee, a Plovdiv #specialtycoffee roaster for a lovely flat white and to buy some beans. Unfortunately, the rain hadn’t abated (thrashing it down in the former Thracian city), which put a damper on my final wandering. The ancient theatre was still impressive — but if you’re short on time in Plovdiv and the sun is shining, definitely take the opportunity to explore the Old Town first! #travelblog #theculturetrip #passionpassport #borntotravel #solotravelstories #solotraveldiaries #womenwhotravel #whereitravel #visitbulgaria🇧🇬 #bulgariatravel #romanremains #architecture #mosaicsofinstagram #coffeetravels #coffeeshopsoftheworld #coffeetravel

Day tripping out of #Sofia today — it was an early start but it was worth it to arrive at #RilaMonastery — a UNESCO-listed monastery perched on #Rila Mountain — before the crowds. Not before the clouds — but they just added to the ethereal atmosphere where the bright colours and stunning frescos of the church buildings contrasted with the snowy mountain peaks and vibrant green pine forests. There’s also a short nature walk you can take along the river to the graveyard. The short but slightly steep return climb means you’ve earned your mekitsa (fried dough served with powdered sugar) and a cuddle with the friendly kitties. We spent about an hour there, which was about enough time to explore properly before heading to our next stop. #travelblog #theculturetrip #passionpassport #borntotravel #solotravelstories #solotraveldiaries #womenwhotravel #whereitravel #visitbulgaria🇧🇬 #bulgariatourism #mountainhike #churchesoftheworld #unescoworldheritagesite

8 REASONS WHY THE BEAUTIFUL COASTAL TOWN OF SAINT-JEAN-DE-LUZ IS WORTH VISITING Located along the waters of the Bay of Biscay, this lovely town in the Basque region, often named one of the prettiest in France, is worth stopping by for many reasons. Originally a tiny fishing and whaling town that grew to be one of France’s largest fishing ports (and later famous for its “pirates”, the Basque corsairs, whose wealth funded many of the local buildings), it is now a laidback spot favored by vacationers and tourists. Here are a few reasons for visiting this charming town: 🏖️It is known for its pretty beaches. You can choose from 5 different ones, all calm due to the protective sea walls. The Grand Plage you see in the photos is the most known one ⏳It has beautiful, historic architecture, including the traditional, timber-framed houses along the water and in the old section of town. Rue Gambetta (5), a pedestrian only street with many interesting shops, some centuries old, is especially lovely. 👑It is here that one of the most important political marriages in history took place. In June 1660, king Louis XIV married Maria Theresa of Spain, ending a long and bitter war between the two countries 💒The ceremony took place in the church of Saint-Jean-Batiste. It features a monumental, guilted Baroque altarpiece, as well as beautifully carved, wooden galleries ⚓️The picturesque old port, with great seafood restaurants, is perfect for strolling along 🎉The town is full of life year round, and there are many cultural festivals taking place, ranging from sardine and tuna ones, to art, music, and other interesting ones 🏛️On Place Louis XIV there is an interesting 17th century turreted Maison Louis XIV museum, as well as the beautiful town hall. The square is a convivial place filled with restaurants, cafés and Basque music 🏨The historic Grand Hôtel (1 & 8) and Casino La Pergola along the waterfront are two buildings worth stopping by. The former is a majestic, neo-romantic building from 1909 with the atmosphere of Belle Epoque, while the latter (also a hotel), was built in Art Deco style. Both have fantastic thalasso spas 📸@blurthefocus

When I quit my job and decided to set out on a backpacking expedition across North India last year, I wanted to start with the holy city of Rishikesh. 🏔️ In my mind, I had a singular event to witness in Rishikesh, but surprisingly enough for me, The Universe decided to give me more than one. 🌸 Maybe I will get to those events at a later time, but for now here is a glimpse of a hungry morning walk to the famous @beatlescafeofficial . The place brims with posters and graffiti of the legendary band, and succeeds in giving off the cool 60’s vibe. The picturesque backdrop of the Himalayas and the eastern bank of the river Ganges compels one to stay longer than required. As with most pahadi restaurants, the food and service remain average. But I particularly enjoyed my time observing this large group of Marwari family, where the youngest cousin walked up to me and made sure to let me know that she thought that my green hair was cool and fist bumped me, before she left. 🐣 #ajubagoestripping #rishikesh #uttarakhand #travel #vintagevibes #75daychallenge

Baku Baku is the capital and largest city of Azerbaijan, as well as the largest city on the Caspian Sea and in the Caucasus region. Baku is 28 m below sea level, which makes it the lowest lying national capital in the world and also the largest city in the world below sea level. Baku lies on the southern shore of the Absheron Peninsula, on the Bay of Baku. It is the primate city of Azerbaijan and the sole metropolis in the country, and about 25% of all inhabitants of the country live in Baku’s metropolitan area. Baku is divided into twelve administrative raions and 48 townships. Among these are the townships on the islands of the Baku Archipelago, as well as the industrial settlement of Neft Daşları built on oil rigs 60 km away from Baku city in the Caspian Sea. The Old City, containing the Palace of the Shirvanshahs and the Maiden Tower, was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city is the scientific, cultural, and industrial centre of Azerbaijan. Many sizeable Azerbaijani institutions have their headquarters there. In the 2010s, Baku became a venue for major international events. It hosted the 57th Eurovision Song Contest in 2012, the 2015 European Games, 4th Islamic Solidarity Games, the European Grand Prix in 2016, the Azerbaijan Grand Prix since 2017, the final of the 2018–19 UEFA Europa League, and was one of the host cities for UEFA Euro 2020. The Baku International Sea Trade Port is capable of handling two million tonnes of general and dry bulk cargoes per year. Baku is renowned for its harsh winds, reflected in its nickname, the “City of Winds”. 📸 in 2023 #traveling #travelers #travelbug #travelholic #travelgram #travelinggram #travelphotography #exploring #explorer #wanderer #wanderlust #doyoutravel #goexplore #travelmore #lovetotravel #wonderfulplaces #roamtheplanet #travellifestyle #solotravels #solotraveldiaries #solotravelstories #passionpassport #travelblogger #Azerbaijan #visitazerbaijan #asia #travelazerbaijan #europe #baku #visitbaku

If you’ve been following my #Sofia Stories, you’ll have seen that I enjoyed my visit to the @redflatsofia yesterday. The apartment replicates the typical residence of a (fictional!) family living in Communist era Sofia in the 1980s. As you move from room to room, you are encouraged to look at, touch, photograph and otherwise interact with anything you like. I was particularly interested in the 1980s travel books and publications (tourism at the time was under the government remit of #BalkanTourist — I spotted a remaining one of their signs just outside shortly afterwards), the photo albums and the liquor cabinet. Oh, and the coffee-making kit in the kitchen — the father of this family was an engineer and got to travel a lot for work, bringing back coffee from “friendly” countries like Vietnam and Cuba (Robusta, I assume, but either way, no doubt a massive improvement on what was available otherwise). It takes about 1h to 1h30 to complete the audio tour and it’s a really interesting way to learn more about life in Bulgaria under Communism. If you’ve ever been to the @thetenementmuseum in NYC, this is pretty similar! #travelblog #theculturetrip #passionpassport #borntotravel #solotravelstories #solotraveldiaries #womenwhotravel #whereitravel #visitsofia #redflatsofia #communist #historytour

If you know me well (or at all, TBH), it will come as no surprise that one of my #Sofia highlights so far was the free food walking tour I took this afternoon with Daniela from @balkanbitesfoodtours. It’s no mean feat covering some 6,000 years of Bulgarian food history and culture, from Neolithic times and the Roman period, via the Ottoman era and Communism, to the symbolic freedom of McDo and the present focus on fresh, local, organic and healthy options. We got to taste various food and drink samples, including (in order of the pics): mekitsa (pillowy, sweet fried dough treats), some Sri Lankan curry croquettes with yoghurt (a good example of the growing number of fusion restaurants in Sofia), some Bulgarian wine (this one was technically red but with some similarities with rosé and white), a vegan banitsa (flaky pastry filled with cheese in this case), and three different types of garlicky Bulgarian dip (with peppers, cheese, and extra spice being added at the end) with a port-like wine to finish at @hadjidragan. Lots of stories, lots of different experiences and a very enjoyable afternoon. I’d recommend booking in advance, especially if you’re only in Sofia for a short while. #travelblog #theculturetrip #passionpassport #borntotravel #solotravelstories #solotraveldiaries #womenwhotravel #whereitravel #cameraeatsfirst #instaeats #sofiafood #balkanbites #gastrotour #foodtours #visitsofia

Some highlights from the @freesofiatour I took yesterday evening with Slavyan. It was a fun and informative intro to the city and its fascinating history. From Roman ruins (including in the Serdika metro station) and hot spring water fountains, to landmarks from the Communist era and domes galore (cathedrals, mosque and synagogue). These days, Sofia is more yellow than red — architecturally at least. #travelblog #theculturetrip #passionpassport #borntotravel #solotravelstories #solotraveldiaries #womenwhotravel #whereitravel #visitsofia #bulgariatourism #romanruins

"The Dream Machine" butterfly... 💜🦋 The sculptural manifestation of the wings represents the materialisation of our innermost and impossible wishes, and the deep-rooted desire to have your dreams come true. As a monument, the wings take flight to carry the dreams of an increasingly hopeless generation that dreams of a fair and just society. As a symbol, the wings represent the fragile human condition that, despite challenges, remains strong, resilient, and even defiant. As a tribute to how fragile we are in our own circumstances but how strong we are in heart, the center bullet is no longer necessary, because once you are between the wings and making a wish, YOU become the bullet. Now, you carry the power to realize the most impossible of dreams. “This is a monument for the Dreamers. For the ones who live and die, making the impossible happen" - Rubem Robierg #thedreammachine #freedom #butterfly #dreamers #butterflywings #CelebrityEdge #SoloTravelStories #celebritycruises #journeywonderfull @celebritycruises
