To date Wong's last 100% Hong Kong production. A spiritual sequel to Chungking Express, I think this is one of his best films. Originally conceived as the third story in the Chungking Express narrative, Wong retooled it and made a feature out of it. A neo noir with shades of comedy, I think the emotional balance of the script works just as well as Chungking Express. Shot mostly with an ultra wide 6.3mm lens, the image is really allowed to breathe. Christopher Doyle really paints with light here, street lamps, neon signs and headlights are all used to illuminate the image. Again we have excellent acting. Leon Lai, Takeshi Kaneshiro, Michelle Reis and Charlie Yeung round out a cast that you just don't get these days. I watched all of Wong's films in the 90s and enjoyed them. Revisiting them now I realise just how talented a filmmaker he is. His works rewards continual viewings. You see the nuances and the in-jokes the more you watch. What I also found was his themes of loss, redemption and security flow through all of his films. The last film he released was 2013's Grandmaster. I really hope he goes back behind the camera and back to Hong Kong again. The zenith of my existence at the Movies and nothing will probably ever compare to this again: Watched a Wong Kar-wai film in a theatre for the first time last week, thanks to my first office travel opportunity to Malaysia and since films are the topmost priority wherever I go, was checking what films are playing that week in Kuala Lumpur and suddenly stumbled upon this playing for the whole week and couldn't help grabbing the chance with both hands! Goes without saying that this is literally the most overwhelmed I've ever felt at the Movies, for instance, the sound of rain in this film, the mise-en-scene, the clothes, the food ("You Order For Me": In the Mood for Love and Chinese Attitudes Towards Food - this is one of my favourite articles where Ava Wong Davies references Wong Kar-wai's statement that this was essentially first a food film to start with and I can relate to so many things in this article, especially even more so during a week where I realized how sitting in front of someone you know with whom you're sharing food comes with its own set of comfort and intimacy than someone very new to you), and above all, just to watch Maggie Cheung and Tony Leung being the most beautiful sad humans ever for 2 hours straight. The first time I watched this film was back in June 2018 (more story on it in the last slide - ignore my amateurish writing back then, but feel the emotion of a kid discovering this film on YouTube randomly) and after 6 years, I understand Cinema far better now along with the knowledge of various other films that influenced Wong Kar-wai for making this film, especially, I can now totally comprehend what Wong Kar-wai meant when he said “I wanted to treat it like a Hitchcock film, where so much happens outside the frame, and the viewer’s imagination creates a kind of suspense. Vertigo, especially, is something I always kept returning to in making the film.” To elaborate further on the same, Hitchcock is arguably the greatest when it comes to camera movement in film and he is at his best when it comes to using the camera as the character's subjective presence in itself in Vertigo... To me, it’s a movie about the decline of female youth. Most women went, go or will go down this path. Book review : this one took me a longer time to finish than I had planned, what with life, work and other things taking its course and precedence.
