ELEPHANT SLAUGHTER FOR TROPHY IN TANZANIA ‼️ Another “super tusker” elephant bull, part of the Amboseli elephant population, was recently killed in the Enduimet Wildlife Management Area in Tanzania. This marks the third such killing near the Tanzanian-Kenyan border in the past six months. Tanzania and Kenya, two East African neighbouring countries, have different ways of managing their elephant population. Tanzania allows some wealthy sport hunters to obtain trophy hunting licenses every year, while Kenya generates all its revenue from wildlife safari tourism. Kenya has a zero-tolerance policy for wildlife hunting or the sale of ivory. Kenya’s efforts to safeguard these elephants were undermined when they were shot after crossing the border, solely for their tusks. ‘Super tuskers,’ a term used to describe elephants with tusks weighing over 100 pounds (45kg), are not just rare; they are critically so. With as few as 50 left in Africa, these majestic creatures are not just a sight to behold -they play vital roles in elephant societies and ecosystems. These bulls’ importance as genetic repositories and influencers within elephant populations is unparalleled. Their killings by trophy hunters are not only biologically devastating but also morally reprehensible. The recent killings violate agreements between Kenya and Tanzania, both parties to the Convention on Migratory Species, which encourages collaboration for conservation. The biased targeting of older males disrupts elephant societies, impeding reproduction and leadership roles crucial for the younger bulls’ development. With this season’s quota now fulfilled, urgent and unified action is imperative to halt these activities before the next season begins. Without cooperation between Kenyan and Tanzanian authorities, the trophy hunting of Amboseli’s elephants will persist. E lo slancio è arrivato con un emendamento presentato durante la discussione della proposta di legge AC 30 in materia di reati contro gli animali. 😡 Tuttavia, nonostante gli sforzi e l’impegno trasversale, il Presidente della Commissione Giustizia della Camera dei Deputati, l’On. Maschio (FDI) ha deciso di dichiarare l’emendamento inammissibile, lasciando aperta la porta a questa pratica dannosa e anacronistica. L’emendamento non sarebbe stato attinente al tema – what?!? – ma il quadro è un altro: l’obbiettivo non è solo far passare la proposta di legge per la “riforma” della caccia dell’On. For me, the scale of this ruthlessness is incomprehensible. It is even more concerning that this not only our past but also our present and possibly our future too, unless we make the right choices. Is this really how we envision the ‘natural’ world around us? Trophies of big cats - mostly threatened species, once majestic animals are shelved at a warehouse of confiscated items. They were killed with rifles, bows and other weapons by hunters who pay large amounts of money for the privilege. The rarer and more impressive the animal, the more they are prepared to pay. Trophy hunting can adversely affect the survival of species and undermine conservation efforts, as hunters often target rare and imperilled species or animals with impressive physical traits and remove individuals who are essential for reproduction and stabilising social groups. Trophy hunters say the money they pay to do the kill benefits wildlife and the local communities but I have researched into this myth in great depths and this claim simply doesn’t add up. Ideally wildlife should be left alone but let’s say wildlife is a commodity and should help local communities, tourism and wildlife photography brings much more revenue to local communities. Trophy hunters fill the pockets of the concession holders and operators (who are often based in other countries). One animal alone will create much more revenue by simply being visited and observed, than being ‘sold’ to be killed by a trophy hunter. I can only congratulate Belgium’s Parliament for a landmark decision earlier this year, by voting unanimously to prohibit the import of hunting trophies from endangered species. The remaining super-tusker elephants (as few as 50-100), distinguished by their massive tusks weighing over 100 pounds, are in critical danger. Elephants do not know borders and the risk here is that they will follow their historical ranges from the protected areas in Kenya into Tanzania where these recent incidents of sport hunting have occurred. 📝 ACT NOW: Sign the PETITION urging the Tanzanian President to end trophy hunting in Northern Tanzania. LINK IN BIO to add your voice! Personally, I see no place in conservation for trophy hunting of super-tuskers. The twisted reasoning used by sport hunters to justify the slaughter of a species, especially one so sentient as an elephant, is logically flawed in so many ways. Ethically, it’s nothing short of BS to try and justify with economic reasons, suggesting that these hunts provide funding for animals through the fees hunters pay, which is a reason I have consistently heard over the years. Just to point out the facts there, if you compare the license fees paid, something like $20k USD (for the largest category of elephant trophy license) to the tourism dollars brought in by a single super-tusker over its lifetime - more than an estimated $1.6 Million USD - the result is clear that the trophy hunt is a huge waste of an economic opportunity, which is of course only a factor in consideration of the significant ecological role of the species and the impact on the human sentiment about nature as a whole. As promised some pictures of the collaring and treatment of Esau last week. Esau had quite a significant injury on the trunk, which is most probably the result of a fight with another bull. A huge team was involved in this effort, which took 2 full days in order to locate Esau and wait until he was in a good location to get darted and treated. We hope Esau will make a quick recovery and that the collar will keep him somehow safe. Using the collar data, Amboseli Trust for Elephants will get valuable information about his movements in Tanzania and we hope this can help in renewing the hunting moratorium in Tanzania and end the hunting of Amboseli’s elephants. Gilgil war erst 35 Jahre alt und und im besten Alter, um für Nachwuchs zu sorgen. Er war der Sohn von Golda, einer Matriarchin. Sein Vater war ein riesiger ikonischer Bulle namens Dionysus. In Kenia ist Trophäen Jagd aus guten Gründen verboten, in Tansania nicht. Elefanten kennen keine Grenzen. Amboseli Elefanten wandern auf uralten Pfaden in das Grenzgebiet. Last week, a third Super Tusker (an elephant whose tusks weigh over 100lbs each) was trophy hunted in the Enduimet region of Tanzania, near the Kenyan border. This incident has ignited controversy and grave concerns about the future of these iconic elephants; according to @biglifeafrica only 10 Super Tuskers remain in the Amboseli area - and potentially fewer than 50 are left in the World. This stark reality underscores the urgency of conservation efforts to protect these animals from extermination. Mature bulls play a crucial part within the elephant society. They guard genetic diversity, hold invaluable social knowledge which contributes to the structure and cohesion of the herd, and are vital parts of the ecosystem. They also influence population dynamics and contribute to the development of younger males. Contrary to hunters’ propaganda, elephant bulls are significantly more reproductively successful in their 40’s than when younger. Their presence is, without a doubt, irreplaceable. Although hunting is prohibited in Kenya, elephants that cross into Tanzania become susceptible to trophy hunting as it is still permitted there. This makes all the free-roaming Super Tuskers potential targets for those who seek to kill them, for either financial gain or in a desperate attempt to make up for deep personal inadequacies. After all, what emotionally healthy person would ever derive pleasure from killing another sentient being? @elephantvoices , @biglifeafrica , and @amboseli_trust have jointly issued a statement urging the safeguarding of the cross-border elephant population in Amboseli. BC has announced its proposed 2024-2026 hunting regulations, and as expected (most unfortunately and archaically), BC will continue to allow the recreational killing of wolves, including wildlife killing contests. Despite paying lip service to the value of wildlife, the BC government continues to cull and allow the recreational killing of wolves. In addition to being highly intelligent, social animals, wolves are a hugely important keystone species in BC's ecosystems. BC's hunting regulations (and lack thereof) show a blatant disrespect for native wildlife like wolves. Help end the recreational killing of wolves, the culling of wolves, and wildlife killing contests in BC by sending letters to the government (links in bio).

With fewer than 30 of these magnificent giants left, their population has been dealt a terribly blow by these losses. It makes me even more sick to know that this was a legal hunt as the elephants had crossed into Tanzania, where this disgusting practice is still legal. Shame on the government of Tanzania for selling out their wildlife and @kilombero_north.official for facilitating this latest murder, allegedly by @rickwarren5555 who owns @warrenwildlifegallery featuring murdered wildlife. This revolting situation should inspire outrage around the globe. Trophy hunting is stealing from future generations and, far from being any kind of conservation, accelerates the decline of endangered species and often results in increased poaching activity. Some experimenting in this piece, but I quite like how it turned out. "Zebra - a Family of Contrasts." Pastel on pastelmat 35cm × 50cm. Zebra appear to be plentiful, but numbers are falling fast. Although they are often a favorite catch of preditors like Lions and Wild Dogs, the main threat is from human interference- displacement and fragmentation due to change of land use/ownership, climate change affecting water supply and grazing, and overhunting - often targeted for their striking, very recognisable striped skin. #wildlifeartist #animalartist #pastelartist #protectwildlife #stoptrophyhunting.
