This year the iconic monarch butterfly was officially designated as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Scientists estimate that the species' population has dropped between 20% and 90% over the last several decades. This is because of human activity, no doubt. We can try to help this beautiful species on a individual scale, and community wide as well, we just need to get those seeds in the ground and care for them as if these butterflies lives depend on it, because they do. @trueleafmarket is arguably my favorite of all seed companies and they have a new campaign to help save the monarchs and they have a seed packet you can purchase through my special code. Took a little stroll through hundreds of colorful roses today at the Inez Grant Parker Memorial Rose Garden in Balboa Park. They were so beautiful flaunting so many colors and the best part is that such a fun excursion cost us nothing. We had the best times doing all the free things in San Diego. If I had to pick a single favorite place on the island of Kauai I would say Polihale State park is it. Over 15 miles of sandy secluded beach, clear water, amazing waves and its nestled right up against the baleggining of the Na Pali Coast. We spent 2 days exploring this place and only saw a few other tourists. We went snorkeling, hiking and just layed around reading books. It was utopian. Serve and quiet. Waimea Canyon, also known as "The Grand Canyon of the Pacific" is such a breathtaking gem of nature. The view of Kauai from the very top of The Sleeping Giant Mountain. This view was incredible. The hike was 4 miles round trip and very steep. We ate wild guava all the way and it was incredible. I've traveled a lot but Kauai is my favorite place I have ever been in my life. I've lived on Aruba, and traveled the carribean, and lived in Panama and trveled to Korea. This is my all time favorite hike ever. Today we hit the Na Pali Coast of Kauai and did the Hanakapiai falls which was 9 miles and the most difficult and most beautiful terrain we've ever undertaken. I haven't hiked that long since having a kiddo, it was a beast! Just got home and getting up at 5am for kayaking. This is the single most beautiful place I've ever been. The waters are crystal-clear with white sand contrasted against black lava rock. The cliffs behind me are straight out of Jurassic Park and there are wet and dry caves all around. This is the Northside of Kauai and its enchanting. We got a permit to hike to a secluded beach and we're hitting that on Sunday and spending the rest of the day probably looking for dinosaurs or something? Tonto Natural Bridge was beautiful today. Lush green canyon walls covered in vines, berries and with water falling everywhere. Unfortunately Pine Creek flooded last night and most of the longer trails were closed but we stopped in to stretch our legs and got to hit Gowan trail and waterfall trail too! Yuma's territorial prison isn't the normal kind of tourist attraction that draws me in but It was really interesting and melancholy to walk among the cells of the first prison in our state. The first inmates were actually forced to build their own cells. When it got over crowded, as we like to do in the US, we built a bigger prison in Florence and moved everyone over. This place was later used as a school, a hideout for train jumpers and shelter for homeless families during the depression. I haven't gone out much in the past few weeks but felt like the kid and I needed some fresh air and sunshine before we hit triple digits so we went to Sweetwater Nature Preserve. It was lovely and just what we needed. I will say it was a little busier than usual but not too busy to enjoy it safely and with lots of respectful distance between park goers. We saw some really cool animals and I'll post photos later. I saw a sign today that said " mud washes off but memories are forever." And I thought "said no mother ever" then I came across this photo of last weekend and it's TRUE. I remember nothing but playing in the dirt as a kid. I don't remember the cereals or cartoons or video games. I remember the mud, the cow patties we made of clay and let dry in the sun. Sometimes we made tacos and put mesquite beans and stuff in them. The mud was like clay and so fun to play with. My boys have been beggin me to take them to white sands again. But instead I took them to brown sands and they were just as happy, there were lakes and rivers and palm trees. Yuma is a strange place and I like it a lot.
