Last year I was looking at seasonal changes with new eyes - eyes of a plein air painter! I realized that change of seasons is just moving away (shedding leaves in fall) and getting back (new growth in spring) to nature's default neutral brown/gray palette. I have explored fall neutrals last November, and now I'm beginning to study the reappearance of green amidst the browns! I've also noticed that mid-seaons are very low contrast. Summer has deep shades and lush lights, but everything is washed out and muted in spring/fall/snowless winter. Also - I forgot how to paint water ✌🏼😬 Will practice more... I'll call it "Alone At The Park" 😊 The story behind it is - I was driving home after dropping of my daughter at school, our town has rail tracks and a cargo train was passing by which is always super slow and takes at least 5 minutes. The traffic had already built up and I knew I wouldn't be able to go through for a while, so I made a U-turn and decided to take a quick walk at the neighboring park. I see them quite a lot, they like to hop on the ground looking for something. Day 43 ~ I decided to use a portion of my 100 day project to work on a long overdue illustration series. As an avid nature lover and proud New Englander, I'm thrilled to illustrate native flora and fauna. The charming New England cottontail bunny is very similar to the super common Eastern cottontail (that munches on my garden plants on a regular), but is a vulnerable species that has been keeping conservation on their toes for over a decade. The pretty plant Hepatica Acutiloba is an early spring flower that, to quote an article, "deserves a better name" - it was named so because its last year's leaves that turn maroon reminded people of human liver, ouch. As for the subject, I'm always super fascinated with red brick walls and this lush fern nestled in a cove was one of the MANY gems at Lyman Estate Greenhouses - one of the oldest in the US. Day 20/100 of #the100dayproject ~ Happy International Women's Day! A widely celebrated and loved holiday in my culture, with mimosa and swallow being the ultimate spring symbols! I miss mimosa so much, I haven't seen it in years, it's so unique and fragrant. Theoretically it exists in the US, but never crosses my way. 13 years without mimosa!! After my torturous style experiments, I'm back to my comfort zone - pure watercolor )) Not to say there will be no more experiments :) Because that was part of the point for me in my 100 day project. They say, as opposed to developing your weak sides, you should really go hard on what you're good at and what comes easy. My weakness is illustration and specifically composition in it - I can never seem to marry technique and composition and go beyond illustrating separate motifs, while painting, repeating pattern design and spot illustrations are easy for me. Every time I embark on a journey to develop my illustration skills, I end up thinking that I'm a painter, not an illustrator. There is a pocket in commercial illustration though called fine art licensing. I think I fit really well in there :) I did a little agent search last year and, unfortunately, with no luck. I was told by different agents that my art was too traditional and not traditional enough! I wasn't super fixated on the idea, so I moved on.
