The Irishman (2019) Review I’ve been wanting to revisit this film for awhile now, and I finally got around to it tonight. And honestly, this is one of my all time favorite films. The acting across the board is mesmerizing with Robert De Niro, Al Pacino and Joe Pesci all giving stunning performances. Easily one of the best aspects of the film though is it’s script. The film is so well written, and the story is honestly exhilarating. The film has a beefy 209 minute runtime, but honestly not a single minute of it feels unnecessary. And this is largely due to the film’s absolutely impeccable pacing. The film constantly has forward momentum, and never once drags. The de-aging technology used here is also absolutely mind blowing. It does take a minute to get used to, but after that it blended in so seamlessly that I almost forgot I was watching de-aged actors. Martin Scorsese’s direction as always is impeccable, and the camera work here is absolutely out of this world. Every single shot is so perfectly lit and framed, it really feels like a masterwork. Another aspect of the film that I love is it’s portrayal of violence. There isn’t much violence in the film, but the violence that is there is extremely bleak, realistic, and raw and it really sticks with the viewer. And to top it all off, this film was one of my favorite final shots of all time. Overall, The Irishman is one of the greatest gangster films of all time, and is a career best from Scorsese. Movie: The Irishman (2019) Director: Martin Scorsese Rating: 8/10 Review: The Irishman is a crime drama starring Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and Joe Pesci. I know most people think this movie is really good, but I just didn’t like it that much. For one thing it’s really long, with a runtime of 3 hours and 30 minutes. This is probably the longest movie I’ve ever seen, and I did not like it enough. I honestly enjoyed the parts where De Niro is an old man more than his stories about when he was younger. It was interesting to see how a former hitman lives out his elderly days. The acting is fantastic, obviously, with an A-list cast like that. The fact that there was pretty much no background score throughout the whole film made the stories seem so real. The whole movie felt incredibly realistic, which is what makes it so good. And yes, I think the movie is good, but I just didn’t enjoy it. I haven’t seen many mob movies like The Godfather or Goodfellas (don’t worry they’re on my list) so maybe I just don’t know enough about the culture to appreciate The Irishman. I dunno. I recommend this movie to film buffs or people who enjoy mob movies, but I would not recommend this to the average viewer unless you can sit through almost 4 hours of a movie. SPOILERS for the rest of this review. It got pretty emotional when De Niro had to kill Pacino near the end of the film, because we saw them growing close throughout the whole movie before that. The fact that there wasn’t any dramatic music building up to De Niro killing him made it feel so real. And his phone call with Jimmy’s wife afterwards was super sad. So ya know, this movie is pretty good. I give The Irishman a 8/10 overall.
