It stars Meiko Kaji and is directed by Shunya Itō, who also directed the first film in the series Female Convict 701: Scorpion. Heavenly Creatures (1994). Directed by Peter Jackson. "It's mummy....she's terribly hurt!" From Hitchcock to Romero's 'Martin', it's always a risky business to request sympathy for murderers & this complicates the matter even further in that a) it is documenting a true life crime & b) at the heart of the film is a charismatic, immediately identifiable love story. Yet the whole thing works thanks to the excellent, nuanced performances that strike just the right ambivalent tone (Melanie Lynskey & Kate Winslet understandably received most of the praise, but Sarah Peirse as the doomed mum is great too). Based on the Parker-Hulme case that rocked New Zealand in the mid 50's, 'Heavenly Creatures' delves into the situations & psychology that resulted in a teenage girl 'moidering' her mother with the help of her best friend (& possibly lover, the parties involved could never agree on this). The murder itself is upsetting but the main focus of the film is on how teenage fantasies & obsessive first love can easily spiral out of control & spill into 'reality' with tragic consequences. Of course traditional society does not help what with its conservatism, class discrimination & homophobia. For me this is clearly Jackson's best film & the fact that everyone else seems to prefer 'Lord Of The Rings' makes me feel as alienated & murderous as Pauline & Juliet. Le voleur des crimes (The crime thief), 1968, Nadine Trintignant. I came across this film when I was studying for my MSc and was living alone and happened to have trouble sleeping, so I found myself very often looking for films to watch at night - it was ~12 years ago and there was no Netflix etc and I lived in a tiny place with a tiny old tv. However there was a specific tv channel that would screen really cool things at night, that’s how I came across most interesting things during my teenage and early 20s years. Sometimes I would be lucky enough to catch the film before it started or just after the titles (difficult times when you couldn’t “watch from the beginning” 😂 or have access to a dvd player). I found myself watching a young Trintignant (whom I’d just adored in Amour back then) witnessing a suicide and starting appropriating such a tragic death convincing himself he was the culprit. This events sets things into motion in a very disturbing downward spiral. It is a strange and not well known film, but it stuck with me. I thought about it again the other day and I wanted to rewatch it but I haven’t found a way too yet - I discovered it was not quite loved by critics back then as much as I did, so I am really curious to rewatch it now. I was studying criminology too back then and I thought it was such an intelligent and non sensational but subtle portrayal of psychopathy and pettiness, which was the most interesting part for me. LaRoy, Texas (2024) Blurb: Some serious Coen bros worship if I ever done saw it. It’s about a loveable schlub in a small Texas town who gets caught up with some bad people. It’s a little “Fargo,” “The Big Lebowski” and “No Country For Old Men” all rolled into one, but without the Coen’s wry signature style. John Magaro does a great job in the lead. I’m a fan of Steve Zahn, but his goofy portrayal as the hapless P.I. here feels like he’s acting in a totally different movie. The MVP in the film is the always excellent and underrated Dylan Baker as the transient hitman. All of his scenes are easily the best parts of the movie. It’s a solid flick that I enjoyed my time with, but it doesn’t even compete with the Coen’s weaker films. Go watch a Co bros movie instead.
