The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956) - Dir. Alfred Hitchcock Hitchcock said the difference between this movie and his 1934 film of the same name was the gap between a talented amateur and a professional. A tad harsh perhaps, as the original, which starred the inimitable Peter Lorre, still has legions of fans, but I agree that the 1956 James Stewart version is superior. I’m a sucker for anything starring Stewart, but this exotic tale of murder and deception is a classic mystery thriller. Dr Ben McKenna (Stewart), his once famous singer wife Jo (Doris Day) and their all-American young son Hank are on holiday in Morocco. At their hotel they meet oily-smooth Louis Bernard (Daniel Gelin) who invites them to dinner, then abruptly cancels. By coincidence they see him later at the same restaurant they’re dining in, where he apparently ignores them. While at dinner, they make the acquaintance of a friendly English couple, who offer to show them around town the following day. As promised, the next morning sees the family shown around the Casbah by the couple, Lucy and Edward Drayton. Without warning, the group observe a man being pursued through the crowd by the police. He is stabbed in the back and collapses into Ben’s arms, seemingly by chance. With his last breath, he whispers a secret into Ben’s ear. What follows is a nightmarish descent into espionage, intrigue and betrayal that will test this regular mid-west family to the limit and place them in mortal danger. Charismatic turns from Stewart and Day, as well as excellent performances from Bernard Miles and Brenda de Banzie, as the Draytons. #TheManWhoKnewTooMuch1956 – 🌟🌟🌟 (out of 4) - Mike’s Review - #JimmyStewart stars as Dr. Benjamin Mckenna and #DorisDay stars as his ex-stage wife Josephine “Jo” Conway Mckenna in this #AlfredHitchcock #thriller remake of his own 1934 British film of the same name. While vacationing in #Morocco, Stewart and Day traveling with their son Hank, befriend a mysterious stranger, which sets up a series of unfortunate events that lead the frantic couple through the streets of Morocco to the streets of London as they get caught up in a game of international intrigue. Some cool set pieces and location scenes throughout, this is not a revered classic Hitchcock film but still has some of his signature suspenseful style. The plot is a bit thin but he does make good use of Day’s singing talent featuring the #Oscar winning song "Que Sera, Sera (Whatever Will Be, Will Be)" during a major plot point. (Quick Wiki: The song reached number two on the US pop charts and number one in the UK). Playing against type, Day brings some good intensity as a frantic Mother and Wife and this was Stewarts follow up Hitchcock film to the masterful Rear Window, he still delivers a sturdy performance but for me it’s a bit of a letdown from that classic film. However, standing on its own footing it’s still a solid suspenseful watch clocking in at 119 minutes and the suspense comes down to the very last 119th minute, BTW, the remake is 45min longer than the first film. Budget of $1.2M it grossed $11.3M a big hit. Wiki Note: Hitchcock does make his patented cameo in the first quarter of the film during one of the Moroccan crowd scenes 25:42 into the film. iMDB tidbit: This film along with Rear Window (1954), Rope (1948), The Trouble with Harry (1955), and Vertigo (1958)) were unavailable for thirty years because their rights were bought back by #Hitchcock and left as part of his legacy to his daughter. Doris Day was an inspiration to many. She has been my idol ever since I can remember. Her music will always be my favourite, and her movies will always be my first choice. She went through so much and pulled herself together and higher up than before, that is inspirational to me. She loved her dogs and cats so much she cooked them their food, they were treated like kings and queens. She lived a full life to the age of 97. Passed away at home with her animals. She was loved by many and will be missed greatly.
